In grad school, one of my classmates was from Pripyat. It was her birthday that weekend and she was excited about the new amusement park and her party, which never happened. She told me that they were evacuated to Moscow but were heavily discriminated against as everyone thought they were contagious. Eventually they were allowed to leave the Soviet Union and ended up in the US.
My fathers 2 cousins were around 20 and 17 at that time, and they went trekking in polish subcarpathia mountins/hills/forests. So pretty close to ukrainian border. They arrived at the start point about 2 days after the "worst day" Sergei mentions. There was a heavy rainfall there at that time. They wish they had camera to photograph it, but they swear to this day that puddles were yellow and purplish-pink. Not "clay mud yellow" but yellow-yellow. And since they were listening to Free Europe at their house, they connected the facts and turned back. So yeah....

I was too young then to recall those events, but years later I talked to my parents who said that in Poland the authorities did not inform the people about the radiation hazard for a few days after April 26th. However, it supposedly was just a few days and then they did inform about the accident in the media. Also, local authorities were ordered to distribute Lugol's iodine for thyroid protection. But my mom told me that right after the accident - these few first days - nobody knew about the radiation danger and since the weather was great everyone would spend a lot of time outdoors. Several months ago, I watched a program, on one of Polish yt channels about science, devoted to the Chernobyl disaster. Some nuclear scientists were interviewed, and they said they immediately knew something serious had happened as their equipment started showing a huge increase in radiation. At first they were kept in the dark about what actually happened cause the govt had to contact Moscow and get instructions how to proceed in that situation. Those were interesting times.

My grandfather was a fairly high ranking officer in the US airforce at the time that dealt with almost all things related to radiation and how to keep people safe from it. When i asked him how soon he new something serious was definitely going on he said within 2 days of the incident and he said they had a pretty good idea that it was a nuclear meltdown. I was 2 years old when Chernobyl disaster happened. I lived near Kuopio,Finland. 2 days before chernobyl there were 6cm (2 inches) of show. On the day of the disaster no show and +9C (48F) so I probably played in a pubble of water that day. Only some minor acidous rain came to Finland but I guess that was just luck.

I was always terrified of imminent nuclear war, she made me study the horror that happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a child, giving me night terrors. We watched the movie about the impending nuclear Armagedon 'The Day After ', when it came out. It messed me up. The constant knowledge that it could arrive in a few minutes. 40 years later, no peace anywhere on Earth, not enough good will towards people.

When this happened, he was camping with a classmate downstream from Chernobyl, not realizing anything happened until few days later. My mother told me similar story like in the video, iodine tablets and all. I think my grandparents threw some things out, too. It was raining heavily, with rain being all weird. It had definitely shortened life of the liquidators, some of them drastically. Months later there was a higher amount of babies being born with genetic conditions... AFAIK I dodged that bullet, but it makes one respect the nuclear power (which I see as a clean source, but that would be another topic). No only in USSR, but also back in Czechoslovakia (half the Europe got affected) people would celebrate May 1st without any warning about the clear danger. BTW, Fukushima was a mere spark compared to Chernobyl. If Fukushima was like Chernobyl, half the Japan would need to be decontaminated, incl. greater Tokio.

This was in Bucharest. Lot of people went crazy when they distributed the first iodide tablets (Not enough), but in fact it was too late. Never seen so much fresh food on the market!!! You could cry just seeing it rot when before you couldnt find any of the things...

Or simply a way to clinch the radio decay of fissile waste products being currently used, for certain that would be a Nobel Prize worthy accomplishment

I was 15 at the time of the explosion in Scotland, it is difficult to explain to the younger generations just how few channels of information we had at the time, TV, radio, newspapers that was it. If these channels weren't interested in a story or they were spinning a line then you were unlikely to hear an alternative view.
