    Hello! Thanks for the video, curious to what your advice would be for finding an entry level position? Graduated last May with a BA in math, I have not taken any exams but am currently studying for p. I have had a year of experience working in risk management for ALM but want to get out of banking and more into insurance. Any advice on what type of roles I should be looking for? Thank you!!

      I think it really depends on where you live. Larger cities will have more options. It also may depend on your preferences: would you like to work for a large consulting company like EY, or a smaller mutual company? Keep in mind, a company may not be forever--but I think it's still important to target the lifestyle you want to live outside of work first, then pick a company that matches it.

    Hello! I'm graduated from economics and I'm about to enter to Actuary. What do you think about it? Is it a good combination? My vision is about going to Insurance companies or financials.

    Is being an actuary stressful? And do we get a favourable life-work balance as an actuary? Waiting for your response dude

    Hello,
    As of right now, I'm majoring in economics with a minor in finance. Learning vba too. And studying for exam p/1. Do you think my major is fairly well to pursue an actuarial career?
    Btw, I really liked this video and hope to see more of you!

      Thanks for the amazing feedback!
      I believe 'cross pollination' is extremely valuable for companies. Two things I may note if you study non actuarial studies in university. (1) If you don't have the correct courses, you may have to take additional exams--(for CAS and SOA these are called VEE's). and (2) You will likely have to have a few exams to show you are dedicated to pursuing the actuarial profession.

      Thank you! Luckily I have covered most of my VEE’s. Probably i’ll have to take an Actex course to cover time series. But overall I think I’m on the right path

    I’m just getting into my actuarial path. I’ll be taking exam p in November. Do you have any advice for starting out?

    • @LiveActuary
      @LiveActuary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yah for sure!
      Hopefully before the end of the year, I'll have a video on my experiences with the preliminary exams.
      Before than, my one piece of advice: Study hard. The exams are an hours game. Take care of yourself and friends along the way. It's easier to retake a failed exam than to mend a broken relationship, or broken self.

    how many exams did you complete?
    Ugh I feel like every actuary went to Waterloo & I live in America 🥺

      I wrote my 6th exam last Friday.
      Waterloo is great. Though I can imagine, 5 years into our careers with a fellowship it won’t make a difference. Where our motivation and enthusiasm stems from impacts our future development sooooo much.

    Can one land a job in Canada or Europe with IFoA (3-4 papers cleared)?

    • @LiveActuary
      @LiveActuary  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I could give a definitive yes or no :/. In Canada, we focus on the SOA and CAS exams. I believe the IFoA does have exemptions for the SOA, as SOA does to CAS. So, we can definitely say that having IFoA credentials will help with the application process.
      Best of Luck with everything :)!

    Hello,are you pursuing actuarial science degree from a university or by registering through a institute like IFOA and IAI?
    Would you suggest what's better?

    • @LiveActuary
      @LiveActuary  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Everyone has a different path that works best for them where they are in life.
      I got a double honours degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science from the University of Waterloo in Canada. University degrees may help one prepare for the preliminary exams for the style of learning and work that an Actuary would be doing. For me, it helped me land my first coop job as an actuary, which in turn helped with my selection of full time employment.
      In most countries one must have there fellowship from an institute to have signing authority in a country. In short, perusing with an institute needed; university will help one get there first job and prepare them for the preliminary exams but is not needed.

    How stressful life of actuary compare to your friends or family, who is different fields?

    • @LiveActuary
      @LiveActuary  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's a great idea! I haven't worked in other fields, so I wouldn't be able to make a direct comparison, but what I could do, is make a video on the 'hidden' stress of the actuarial profession.

    Hello, thanks a lot for your video. I'm preparing for the FSA (Quantitative Finance track) next March 2021. Does it help when I apply for insurance companies in the US and Canada? Or, is it compulsory to take ASA exams? Thank you!

    • @LiveActuary
      @LiveActuary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if I'll be able to answer your question with the answer you want. If when you say FSA vs ASA you are referring to upper level exams vs preliminary--I'd say the upper level's are more practical and should give you an edge for applications.

    How many exams did you take in your undergrad?

    • @LiveActuary
      @LiveActuary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completed 4 exams before finishing undergrad. At the University of Waterloo in Canada, a larger number is typical.
      Buuuuuut. In my opinion... In North America, if you just focused on passing 2 exams, (Exams 5 & Exam 6). (which I don't think you need preliminaries to do them). you will be MUCH better off than taking 4 preliminaries for job prospects.
