+Barry Mires - Great insight..Shirley is a great singer/actress. You may or may not be aware that she tried out for the part of 'My Fair Lady' and the producers were looking at her very seriously. She actually was told that she had the part, but at the last moment they changed their minds. Back then, it wasn't so easy for a mixed race person go get a major part role across from a white man, (Rex Harrison). In the end, Audrey Hepburn got the role, and it was very clear from the start that she was not a singer! Shirley was devastated. But, she decided to show her acting abilities in her stage performances. She would have been a great actress.
No easy task for a lady of mixed race to get the roles she deserved back in that time. I think we can all agree she made the correct decision.....but she would have made a magnificent Anita in West Side Story....just my long held want for songs she would have killed in just the right way.....and she could have been cast in that one too...perhaps they feared she would steal the show.....and no doubt she would have shone like the star she is. Natalie wood had a refreshingly ingenue voided that worked for My Fair Lady across from Rex Harrison who words spoke his songs. He would have been totally eclipsed by the amazing Shirley Bassey and the casting agents knew it.
