- In a segment from the Greg Bedard Patriots Podcast, Greg and Nick discussed how Bill Belichick has coached this season, and whether or not he's at fault for the Patriots' disfunction. Bedard shared his thoughts on Belichick, and where the team is right now.
"I just think that Belichick is ineffective at coaching this team right now. Whatever message used to get through, was it mostly because of Brady, was it mostly because of his success? They're so far gone from their successful times and the roster turnover that happens. It's a completely different team."

Bill Belichick is now 8 losses away from losing 165 regular season games which will tie the all
time NFL record held by Jeff Fisher and Dan Reeves.
With Brady, Belichick's career record is 219-64.
Without Brady, Belichick's career record is 80-93.
No confidence in Jerod Mayo as head coach. He comes from the Belichick coaching tree. No disciple of Bill has enjoyed great success as an NFL coach outside the Patriots' glory years. Also, it's a mistake to start picking a coach. Start with a general manager. Let the new GM help decide who should be the new coach.
Chances are really high Jerod Mayo fails as HC. The Offensive Coaches are preferred. When Mayo does poorly, he cans the OC and the QB has to start over. What’s Jerod Mayo going to do with that horrendous O-Line?
Generally Bedard, I like your comments because they are thoughtful and fair. I'll just make a few random comments about the video.
Nick said he was willing to give Bill credit for the super Bowls, How generous. Nine Superbowl appearances in 24 years proves he can coach . And yet people are calling for him to be replaced by a a coach who doesn't call the defensive plays. That would be irresponsible. I hope Kraft knows enough to not be swayed by the fans or the media.
Mac Jones has regressed in his development. He needs a bona fide quarterback coach. If Kraft won't provide one he should hire his own during the offseason like Brady did.
Why in hell would we want Jerod Mayo as our HC? Who thinks thats a good idea? I really don't understand that.
I think the very best upside for Mayo is Mike Vrabel. Having a mostly incompetent offense, solid but not elite defense, being a threat in the division and hey, maybe they beat one team they shouldn't in the playoffs but they arent a serious contender. Thats the upside in my opinion. The downside is every Bill Belichick coach ever conceived in filth and stupidity. An incompetent idiot who runs teams into the ground with terrible player inputs and a knack for pissing off players and making boneheaded decisions.
As a Patriots fan from my childhood the idea of Mayo coaching our team makes me shudder. Please somebody have some sense and dont do that.
Belichick succeeded in what he set out to do in 2022 which is to destroy Mac Jones.
I fully agree with you. Bill is vindictive and wants Mac gone. So if Bob K won’t let Bill B trade Mac, Bill just sets up Mac to fail, by giving him an Oline that is bad (I’m being kind). Also, Bob K told Bill B to hire Bill O’Brien. So what Bill B is doing to destroy Mac, also works to destroy Bill OBrien’s career.

Who’s the leader on the field? Who’s making the biggest mistakes over and over again ? After 2 weeks you weren’t saying these coaches aren’t getting the best out of these players? The last four weeks have been worst. I agree they’re under talented at key positions But the leader on the field is setting the tone for the rest of the play we see way more than the coach. Your disdains for coach have finally allowed you to be emotionally irrational. Who replaces bill? Do his sons leave too? I’m open for a new direction but not because hills not effective. His system needs specific QB play we’ve seen it at multiple places. Bills old school. Defense wins championships. So for people to be taking victory laps because finally after 20 plus years you people are right. The way bill does things GM and coach doesn’t work. Congratulations on being persistent

He's been as big of a liability as Mac Jones.
I don’t think it’s the coaching, it’s injuries and lack of talent due to a poor job in drafting and free agency.

Injuries, lack of talent, poor drafting and poor free agent signings affect the coaching; no coach has a long life when all of these elements coalesce into a perfect storm.
With the Patriots, the coach is also the guy that is directly responsible for the lack of talent, the poor drafts and poor free agent signings. Injuries are part of the game and cannot be used as an excuse. Belichick, when he had institutional and roster support had Earthwind Moreland, Sterling Moore, Randall Gay and Troy Brown playing major roles on defense for title teams when they filled in for injured players.
Yes he is not effective so we need a reset. Let’s go full offense rebuild. We have cap space and will have high draft picks,

The Boston media is all in on MAC(not all)...and they're proving wrong, last year it was MATT Patricia fault...MAC doesn't have that intangible. I just look at his 2nd half of his rookie year...been downhill since. Mac had 7 first round picks on offense at Alabama. He fill into BB's lap at 15. BB didn't want him...He was force on BB. Who knows where he would of fill to in the draft. He's a backup at best. 49ers moved on from their pick. MAC LEAD THE LEAGUE IN PTS OFF INT at 34....

And as usual you both had some Macscuses with the usual "...not to excuse Mac.." crap. And Mayo will do better because he is updated firmware. Just like Obrien was gonna do better this season. But you dont want to talk about how he is actually doing worse than Patricia/Judge did last season.
