“This Is Bonkers And Rubbish” | Teachers Able To Work From Home Under New Plans

  • Teachers will be allowed to work from home for marking and lesson planning under a Labour plan aimed at improving recruitment.
Headteachers will be encouraged to offer more flexibility, allowing teachers to work from home during free periods.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson hopes this change will help prevent women from leaving the profession after having children. Schools would be urged to schedule blocks of free periods at the start or end of the day, making it easier for teachers to balance work with childcare or the school run.
Jeremy Kyle speaks with Chair of The Campaign For Real Education, Chris McGovern.

Why am I supposed to be outraged by this? That seems completely reasonable...

They do that anyway, after the school day. Why the outrage

It's removing the expectation of being in the workplace. A lot of parents evenings are now virtual or at impossible hours for parents - like 4.30pm. Before you know it, teachers will be working from home and delivering lessons via Teams to the classroom. Then it will go to pre-recorded, and then it will be back to lessons from home. The length of Covid closures of schools wasn't an accident. It wasn't a precaution. It was a test.

When I was a teacher I already did all my marking and planning at home. I used my rare free periods to have a cup of tea and get ahead with my printing. This isn't really anything new. The proposal for a 9 day fortnight would also help with workload as the 10th day could be used to catch up with admin. There is a real problem with teachers being overworked and it does need addressed.

To reiterate others' comments - they will be allowed to mark and plan at home. Currently they would need to stay in school to do this non teaching work. A certain number of adults needs to be in school physically for safety, so it would most likely be a rota. Normally I like TalkTV but some people here haven't read the article properly.

Teachers have been marking and lesson planning from home for eons. Free periods in school day are used to catch up with more lesson planning and marking.

Another aspect of all this is getting out of bed, getting ready for school. Arriving on time is all part of a discipline which will eventually train them for going out into the workplace. No socialising will have problems when they do enter employment.
