Repair of the standby circuit in a Onkyo R-805X Receiver. All of these units have the same issue after they get old, just a relay clicking and no power.
When I replaced the capacitor, I left the leads long so that it would be away from the resistor. I used pieces of tubing to isolate and insulate the leads. Striped wiring insulation will work fine.
This is great, Ben. I am having the same issue with my Technics SA-DX750 receiver. Tried tracking the stby circuit cap but no luck. "Newbie"...I did notice what I am thinking is a surge protector type of varistor diode (Zener) between the clicking relay and the transformer. Have no idea how to test that thing so I thought I would just replace it. Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would not think so the ht-r590 is a full size receiver and would have a completely different design. It is possible that it has a similar issue though.
Hmm, I would double check to make sure that it is the correct value capacitor and that the polarity is correct. I have fixed a good many of these now and the one capacitor seems to do the trick every time.
Picked one of these up at Goodwill 7-8 years ago same basic issue/cap. Best $8 I ever spent on hifi. Use it to this day with tube pre and turntable and with recent addidion of BT5 receiver whole new world of play opened up streaming flac from my phone's dac and some Klipschs'. If you see one of these in the bin, GRAB IT! Most any issue is a simple fix and the sound (10-50khz) out of this is phenominal.
TH-cam is cool! I have one of these receivers that has this issue now. The first thing I did was find a service manual. The 2nd thing was to do a search on TH-cam to find the video of someone fixing one of these units. I knew I was going to find it. And I did. Now all I need to do is get a replacement capacitor and go to work. The R-805X is a nice little receiver. I use mine at my office running a small pair of PSB Intro mini bookshelf speakers. I also have the 3 disk CD Changer. It may need some work too because while it worked OK when I got it, it does not want to open the draw to load CDs. We will see what I can do about that once I fix the receiver. Thank you Retro Ben!
Hello, great video! I just bought an Onkyo R-805X myself yesterday, but the display is dead/ does not work. I had bought a Yamaha crx-330 before that which also had the same issue (display not working), but someone on TH-cam made a great video on this and how to solve it, by "simply" adding a capacitor. Would you be able to tell/ show me where I would need to do this on the Onkyo R-805X (assuming the capacitor fix would also apply here)?
The R-805X usually has a different issue with the display, the VFD gets kinda worn out because they stay on all the time, there is a "fix" I would like to make a video showing how how to do it, but I already fixed the display on mine so I need one the is bad to demo the process.

Yes I have, the problem is that over time the filaments in the vacuum fluorescent display loose their ability to emit electrons to the phosphor part of the display. If the phosphor itself is not worn out you can overdrive the filaments on the display with a bench power supply for a few seconds until they glow, normally the only get about 6vac and never have visible light. Do this a few times and it will get rid of the oxidation on the filaments and will allow them to work normally. I did this to the other stereo I had that the display was almost black on and is has been working great now for over 8 years. I may have to a video on this. Thanks for the comment.

Good idea, it does get cooked by that power resistor otherwise.
I fixed the no display by replacing C920. While you are at it, change C921 as well.
Great video, this repair worked like a charm. One issue after I turned it on, no sound until about 1/2 way, then it is super loud. Ideas??

I would check to see if you have any bad output transistors on that side of the amplifier.
