Tweedle Dee NFB and cascading gain tests

  • I tried to illustrate how versatile this clone of a Tweedle Dee (a Fender 5E3 Tweed amp moded by the great Alexander Howard Dumble) becomes when you add a negative Feedback switch and a cascading gain option. This allows the amp to get a lot more gain with channel1 cascading into channel 2. The NFB allows you to dial how raw, or ferocious the overdrive will sound. Great little gem!
Sound was captured with my phone, so it may not be the best restitution, but it allows to illustrate the purpose of the video.
    Feel free to comment!

Nice rig!! I dream of trying to dumbleize a tweed band master!

Hey Russell, thanks ! I would not advise this as a first build, but if you are comfortable with a soldering iron, start small, like a champ or 5e3 and then you could le try and mod your band master. Andy Fuchs does these mods for you as well, you should look it up!

really good , you get that sweet dumblish middle! can you share what transformers did you use? tubes? caps type? you get excellent mix of them

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks! Both Trannies come from an old late 60s Pine electronic amp. No info available on these on the internet, but it was used in the same configuration: push pull 2x6V6 with a bridge diode rectification. Tubes are current production JJ 6V6s (these tend to support the bias of the amp) and had an old sovtek 12AX7 in V1 and a regular JJ 12AX 7 in V2. Caps are all Orange drop 6PS 600V in the preamp and 715P for the PI. I have built a second one of these little beast, again with an old RCA400 Power transformer and a modern Hammond 15B OT and it sounds glorious too. Highly recommend this build! Speaker choice is quite important too, mine is going into a 2x12 WGS ET90

@ thx, I gave up on 5E3 due to uncontrolled, ugly gain and bass issues, but your build made me think again and maybe i'll give it another chance :)

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@bepone1904 first tame the bass issue with lowering coupling caps of the preamp. The Dumble Tweed had lots of interesting tweeks that modernize the sound and makes it a lot more user friendly ;) Have fun!

I'm confused. The NFB switch is, "down" out of circuit stock, "middle" partial effect and "up" on all the way?

    •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The NFB switch is a three way switch : OFF (No Negative feedback) Raw original sound, ON with 24k resistor NFB (Strong NFB = cleaner sound) and ON 56k resistor NFB (Lighter NFB, in between OFF and ON)

Hey, thanks for posting this video! Your amp sounds awesome and I am in the process of modding my 5e3 kit to be a tweedle dee with these mods as well. My question is, what did you do for your master volume? Is it a pre or post phase inverter master volume? What size of potentiometer did you use for it? 1 meg? Thanks!

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Dawson, thanks for your comment. I have tried different MV (pre and post) and the most transparent is the LarMar type II (post PI) That is my recommendation.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey I realized I did not answer about the size of the pot. It is a dual pot 250k linear

i'd say the biggest difference (with the original 5e3) is in the tighter low end. What do you think?

Man this sounds so good!! Do you have any links to these mods and amp build??

Hey Josh, thanks! And yes there is a thread around this build with references to all the mods on the ampgarage.com

Hey Fred. The layout from Amp Garage looks like a 5C3 chassis with 3 inputs. Is that what you used for your build? Also, any links to a layout and schematic for the cascading gain modification?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey Jason, I used the layout from Rob Robinette's website and kept only 2 high inputs instead of 4 as per the original 5e3 layout. But the values of the board are coming from the dumble tweedle Dee layout available at the amp garage. The cascading option is discussed in my build thread at the amp garage, but the mod is coming from the great Rob Robinette's website ;) you will find it in the mods section for the 5e3. Good luck with your build!

@ Thanks for the reply brother! That amp is a hoss!! I read your thread and there was some discussion about tapping before and after the PI. Any verdict?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jasonrobertson8487 yes I much prefer the Lar Mar type II MV, other experiments were not conclusive. But if you plan to add NFB switch, then the NFB will eat the effect of the cathode bypass until you play at full volume. So beware ;)
