  • Disney Cruise Line has been a very unique cruise line ever since they launched in 1998 and has continued to be my favourite cruise line for years. The Disney Fantasy in particular checks all the boxes for me and when the company announced a new ship, I've been excited to check it out. Today I'm taking a look at the brand new, Disney Wish but approaching it with the context of how much money I've spent for the experience and comparing it to Disney's legacy ships. Join me in this somewhat critical look at Disney's new cruise ship and if it's worth the money.

Homegirl passed up the chance to just go on cruises on company dime for actual research purposes.

Disney released a book about the design of the new Triton-Class ships, and one chapter is titled, "if it ain't broke, fix it anyway." That is the perfect description of where they went wrong with the Wish. They knew some things needed improvement, but instead of making small changes and seeing how they work in reality, they went overboard (pun intended) and rearranged literally everything. It seems almost random what things ended up better and which things became worse. The only intentional improvement the Wish has over its predecessors is that the crew accomodations are much roomier and more thoughtful.

There is an IDEOLOGICAL REASON - yes, politics - for the "fix/CHANGE it anyways", because a) Disney has been taken over by left-wing ideologies/activists and b) the correct definition for left-wing includes ANTI-TRADITIONALISM / "change for change's sake" / PROGRESSIVISM. So "keeping things like they were" is not part of their mindset, even when it isnt about social engineering, which they are deeply involved in.

@@TriangleSquares Yeah, I'm autistic and I have hypoglycemia. I went to Disneyland a few days ago and it was my first time going in three years. I loved Galaxy's Edge and all the cool restaurants. But I realized afterwards that I probably would've had a horrific experience if I wasn't so well prepared and having a genuinely good day that day. If my blood sugar dropped and I was having seriously bad sensory issues, I would be absolutely screwed in the main park. California Adventure had a lot more actual meal food stands, but the lines were pretty long and the food was always exotic. I'm lucky I had a stable headspace during my trip because Disney sucks at accommodating for sensory issues, autism, and disability.

    • @caitlynr7295
      @caitlynr7295 ปีที่แล้ว +67

Same! The marvel one especially seems like an absolute nightmare to me. I tend to appreciate Disney's dedication to theming, but I really feel like they missed the mark with this one, and just made it incredibly overwhelming. Not even just for adults with sensory issues or autistic people in general - but even just for completely neurotypical KIDS. Sure, some kids will absolutely love it, but I'm just imaging the breakdowns you see from exhausted, sugar crashing, *overstimulated* kids at a Disney park, but happening in a loud, dark, windowless restaurant with inescapable noise and stimulation (I could be wrong, but there didn't seem to be any parts of this restaurant that were quieter or less overwhelming).
Even if they didn't give a shit about being accessible -- and it's abundantly clear they don't -- you'd think they would *at least* consider the kid issue. It's a Disney cruise, there's gonna be a lot of kids, they know this and plan for it elsewhere. Was there really no one on their team who brought this up when they were planning these restaurants??
Also, I get that Marvel is incredibly popular and it makes sense that they'd want to incorporate it into a restaurant and certain areas of the ship, but not everyone going on a Disney cruise is a Marvel fan. There's ways to make a Marvel themed restaurant that's enjoyable for fans and non-fans alike, but this godawful experience with a blaring clip show (of movies with super loud fight scenes, not sure why they thought that was a good idea for a dinner show?) playing nonstop during the meal is not the way to do it.

Something I hope Disney realizes soon is that the reason they were successful was because of the experiences worth going back for. They’ve shifted to getting as many people there just to make a quick buck rather than giving those people the feeling of wanting to go back. It’s a shame really because it ruins already amazing places worth going back for to this shell of a former attraction

Watching this from Europe, it's so utterly baffling to understand the pricing and target market for these ships. Disney always struck me as a very mainstream brand, obviously premium but still affordable and accessible to everyone. I stayed one night at Euro Disney when I was 12 and it was honestly one of the best memories of my life. However it was not super expensive, more of a premium 4-star place that you save up for and enjoy as a treat. Who are the people paying five figures for 3 nights on a floating man-made Disney branded ship?!! Surely they must be in the top 1% of earners, but I cannot imagine an investment banker or brain surgeon thinking a Disney cruise is the best holiday experience they've always wanted, EVEN if you have kids. Just like the options you listed, if you are willing to pay 2-4K a night, you are literally pushing the highest limits of luxury in the world. You can sit in a jacuzzi over the rooftops of Florence or get picked up by a water taxi to a private island in Venice. Reenact Lost in Translation in Park Hyatt Tokyo or have your personal butler at The Ritz London. Why anyone would spend that living in the smoke stack with hundreds of people staring in at you is...just...O_O

I think we can expect the prices for the Wish to go down in the future years and be on the level of cruises on the Dream/Fantasy. Right now, the people are mostly paying for being on the new ship. But, usually, Disney cruises, while expensive, offer a good value for money. For instance, I was on the Magic this summer and we paid around 300$ per person and per night. It's pricey, but you have everything included, the food and entertainment is far better than on the other cruise lines, and Disney includes a lot of stuff that other cruise lines make you pay (like for instance, when you arrive to any port, you have free shuttles for the nearest city center, while on other major cruise lines you'd have to pay around 15$ per person). Right now, I feel way less ripped off on a Disney ship than I do at Disneyland Paris or Walt Disney World

I’m not going to lie: the lobby/main atrium for the Wish is absolutely stunning, and it’s a nice touch to mix up the very much wood/classical theming from the previous ships. I'm so glad other people saw the issues on the Wish. We went on the 5th or 6th voyage of the Wish and hated everything about it. My family in total has been on 13 + Disney cruises and the Wish was a huge disappointment. The confusing layout, 0 midship elevators, poor adults areas, waited inline to get seated for dinner, the push for commercialization of jelwerly shops and designer stores, and we had terrible service. We have never complained about a Disney cruise EVER. I really hope something changes because we wont be returning to this new line of ships.
Also on my trip we never got to ride the aquamouse because the line was over an hour every, every single day at all times to ride. I never experienced that on Dream or Fantasy. It was insane

I still can't get over why they have a $4,000,000 dollar necklace for sale on this ship. Do they really expect some random passenger to have the money and the impulse to buy it? Hiring someone to head a design team who had never been on a cruise ship was a huge tip-off to one major source of the problems you encountered, and is an absolutely astonishing indictment of the management that allowed that to happen. Outsiders can bring in good, fresh ideas, but they need to be learned in the basics of the industry and the product before allowing them to make multimillion dollar decisions that will follow the ship for decades.

It's even worse that they EXPLOIT the idea of (supposedly) "supporting" Wish Kids (Make-A-Wish) but... ignore or deliberately, maliciously exclude their accessibility needs.
Not wants, NEEDS, that are legally protected.
Where's a zero entry family pool? Water wheelchairs? Now THAT'S innovative for cruises.
Only ABLE BODIED kids can use the showy but USELESS slide/stairs. Sucks to be you, sick or disabled kids, no fun for you, you don't matter. No elevators for you. Oh, but smile pretty for our exploitative ads where we pretend we "care"...
The Marvel restaurant is LOUD, crowded, inaccessible, and grotesquely TACKY. The "Star Wars" lounge is pathetic.
Nothing is innovative or well designed. Traffic flow was chaotic. The upcharge restaurants are a total waste, not a perk.
This ship is a cheap, lazy, greedy, grasping failure. Not an improvement.
Cruising was supposed to be relaxing, fun, elevated, innovative.
And that laughable new slide in the tacky lobby? What a WASTE. One and done. Cheap. Minimal. Lazy. Not innovative.

We still had a great time but there was just something off with the Wish. Something to add here…we dined at Enchante one evening and my wife flipped out of her chair! They are very heavy chairs with only three skinny gold legs. The staff told us that someone flips out of a chair every night and they are still waiting for the new restaurant chairs to come in. Jake...as someone who works in architecture and design and as someone who has been on a number of cruises...this was a very well thought out analysis of the ship, it's layout, it's themes and design and the use of space. I agree with virtually all the points you made. Based on what was shown, this seems to me to be a case of "too many cooks". One of the things that destroyed the Disney Star Wars trilogy was that it felt like the story was put together in numerous board room meetings with multiple executives and film team members all throwing ideas on the table.
This ship looks like it had the same problem. Instead of going to a company that designs cruise ships and builds them for clients, giving them some themes and concepts and letting them professionally design the ship. Instead, it looks like they worked off a set of plans from an existing ship, came up with all new themes, layouts and attractions and then said to the designers, "make it happen".
A very confusing ship with too much time and money spent on some things and not nearly enough on others. Awesome video!

  • @Ender.wigginn

I'm wondering if some of the materials changes in the rooms, like the reduction of tile in the bathrooms and the fake tile in the showers, happened due to the pandemic. I'd say the pandemic happened close to when they would have been starting on the interior spaces. Same with some of the design and materials choices in the Consierge rooms.
Personally art deco and art nuvo are two of my favorite periods of design and arcutecture. I'd def prefer the older ships for that reason, even if the Wish was perfect in every other way. I feel like those design styles balance well the playfulness of Disney for kids and the classiness parents and adults would expect from such an expensive cruise.

Most people aren’t aware of this, but the Wish is the first Disney Ship to be designed to run on LNG (liquified natural gas). The machinery required to do this directly caused almost all of the design issues on the Wish. It’s why the 1923 has a split design. It’s why there are two smaller theaters. It’s why there was a bump out near the rear funnel (then they added a second to match). It’s why there are weird corridors and dead ends. There were a lot of compromises made. But that doesn’t excuse so many of the other issues. Like not being able to run on the promenade, or Hyperspace Lounge and the shops being located where there would be prime oceanviews.
There was a lot I loved about the Wish. I liked the concept of a castle at sea. I liked the concept of a Marvel restaurant. I liked so much about it. But I’m in no way eager to go back (our next cruise in 10 days is on the Fantasy).

I don’t know why there seems to be so much that has to go up through the center of the ship, though. they didn’t go into that level of detail.

Dude, absolutely. Please do more content like this. First of all, your Abandoned and Bankrupt serine are awesome. However, watching this clip, you should absolutely do more. Your in-depth look at what make Disney Wish what it is was great. You provided detailed observations of what the ship is like, and you did an excellent job of comparing to the baseline Disney experience on the older ships.
Please take a cruise on an Oasis class Royal Caribbean and provide you insight. I never watch a clip that much more 20-25 minutes long. So I started this one with some hesitation. But I have no idea how the 45 minutes went by. Make more, please.
We’ve been wanting to take a Disney cruise and Disney Wish, being their newest ship, was going to be our choice. It is clear to me that booking a cruise on one of the older ships will be far more satisfying. Thank you.

your comments about everyone being able to see in on the tower suite reminded me of something.
at the globe theatre replica in london, the tour guides will point out the royal/vip seats. these were placed *behind* the stage, where the back wall/set would be today. which is ludicrous to pay for if you're going to see the play, but they weren't. they went there because that way everyone could see them, they were paying to be important and be seen and almost be part of the entertainment.
perhaps the people who the tower suite is aimed at have the same philosophy. they want to be seen, they want everyone to know theyre there and have the money. its a "look at me, peasants" room.

As someone who has yet to go on a cruise, this was an extremely informative video. Yes you were biased but that bias is based off of your previous Disney cruise experiences and the comparisons really gave reason to your bias which therefore provided a lot of information and context for someone who's never been on a cruise before. You made your bias clear, allowing viewers to make their own opinion on the specific topic at hand. Very well-done video (as ALWAYS) and very thoughtful commentary on your thoughts and opinions on the ship.

In 2017, before Covid, I sailed on the Disney Dream. I had just touched 18 years old and it was an incredibly memorable experience even though I was at an awkward age so I couldn’t be with the teens or the adults in the bar 😂
This ship feels… less open than the Dream. I like the idea of it. I like the Tangled themed concierge deck. But it’s not worth paying that amount of money to get subpar quality stuff. The Dream was amazing. I gained 10 pounds. The pirate night + snacks were so much fun 😭
But yeah. This ship looks unorganized and hectic. Closed off too. Real sad.

Wow, thanks for this summation. As an architect, I’m baffled by many of the design and layout choices. Especially when it comes to those awkward and uncomfortable public/private clashes! (With the grand suite really taking the cake.) Or the poorly used windows, the blind doors, weird circulation… As a Disney fan, I’m saddened, as it is a noticeable step backwards from what came before. And, worst of all, with all the missed opportunities it feels incomplete. The whole thing is second-rate (and sometimes even lame). As a Disney shareholder, I’m frustrated because more and more I realize the recent leadership is not qualified to lead the company forward. This ship feels like the original California Adventure (or, more recently, Enchanted at the Magic Kingdom), where something was done on the cheap because “hey, it’s Disney, people will still come.” At least with Cal Adventure, Disney’s finances weren’t that great, but here, that is not the case. In the year prior to the pandemic, Disney gave away over two billion dollars to shareholders. $2B. One year. And they gave away about that much in years prior. Rather than spending the money to make true Disney magic they cut corners and rely on their uncreative notions and hubris thinking they know what people want and will tolerate. They are hyper fixated on short term profit and don’t seem to realize or care that they chose to be a part of a creative enterprise. It’s unfortunate, and I hope that the ship can be righted (totally not sorry for the nautical pun :P) before it fully runs aground.

My family and I were onboard at the end of July and we agree with you 100%. We were shocked by the mistakes made in the design of this ship, and felt they were also cutting corners to cut costs, like much fewer food options in the buffet and with the one hot tub on the pool deck in order to convince you to pay more for the hot tubs in the spa. We too found this ship’s layout very confusing and never really got it, something that’s never happened to us on any other cruise before. The lounges for the activities aren’t big enough to host the events they host. The animation classes are just a cast member hitting play on a TH-cam video. You also rarely get to see the sea, but that makes sense given Disney thought it made sense give this project to someone who’d never been on a cruise ship in her life 🤦‍♀️ and you can tell. We really disliked this ship and we’ll never go again. (For reference, we’ve been on all of the other DCL ships except for the Fantasy).

I was lucky enough to go on the Fantasy when I was 19 and the thing I appreciated the most about that ship was how Disney *knows* that the cruise line would be popular with families, so they made a point to prioritize noise control and making equally detailed and well-thought out areas for all age groups. Heck, it’s the reason I recommend Disney cruise lines to people in the first place, the kids are off in their own areas and the only time you really encounter swaths of screaming children are in the family pool area, where it’s kind of expected. That’s a real shame that the new ship has gone so hard with the luxury staterooms and yet they haven’t actually thought much of the day to day experiences of the adults that are paying for all of it, hahaha

We cruised on the Wish a few weeks ago. We had a wonderful time, but your video brought out some of the problems that we experienced; getting around the ship, some of the club areas, and the closely packed dinning areas. We were lucky to have a table for 4 and sat furthest from the next table so we didn't feel as crunched as we could have. We didn't get a chance to dine in the specialty dining areas, but we did walk through them and they are beautiful. I don't think people who have not been on the Dream or Fantasy would find what frequent Disney cruisers find annoying. Once they have experienced the other ships, they may have the same feelings about the strange decisions that were made on the Wish.

I would like to come back on the Wish once everything is the way they want it and Aladdin show is running. This past couple years of Disney both at sea and at the parks has changed my mindset. I was on this ship on a similar early sailing date. after being on the Wonder barely 2 weeks before (thanks to the very same 50% you got for your cancelled sailing) I was very disappointed to say the least. I thought this ship would be amazing, all of the marketing made it look like it would be a one-up above the Dream and Fantasy, but it simply wasn't. The layout was EXTREMELY confusing with numerous deadends and a lot of unmarked rooms or signs pointing to nothing. Both The Worlds of Marvel and Arendalle had mediocre food at best, especially when compared to the other ships, and both dining experiences were much less fun than something like Animators Pallette on any of the four other ships. Many of the crew members I talked to didn't eve know their way around the ship yet, most of them being on for more than 2 months by the time of my boarding. To think that the lead designer had never even been on a cruise before, let alone a disney cruise is astonishing, While the first impressions of the ship, both inside and out were amazing, by the end of the three night cruise I was still struggling to find my way around to many of the common areas onboard. Overall, I'm with you, I don't think the wish will ever be seeing me as a passenger again.

Yeah, I am amazed they had a designer who had NEVER been on a Disney cruise before. That is awful. Even animators do actual research on what they’re drawing on.

Thank you for your insight. When I working on the Oasis of the Seas every night I use the track for my evening work out.
