    This was brilliant Phil. More enjoyable then some muppet taking a perfectly functioning RC and decimating it in the name of durability. I worked in a hobby shop a few years back, and we had customers always asking "Whats the best..." I'm not a Traxxas hater nor an Arrma fanboy, so I didn't have any issues with how everything scored. But I do like that Jumpshot SC as well.

    • @beandean356

    Typical Traxxas, it's always the little bits that break first. Still like the Jumpshot more on the looks side, although given the choice after your review I would take the HPI anyway, brushless of course.😊😊

    So, start of December and after a 35yr break, I decided to get back into RC cars again. Saw a shedton of videos from a whole host of different channels and figured that this channel is the one I've settled on. Ended up buying a WLtoys 124008 off the back of what you'd said. Stampede was the first "real" RC I bought myself in 1995 as a college graduation present. I need to put it back together as I started stealing parts to build one for my son. I ended up building one for each of my 3 kids. Green bits for my oldest son, pink for my daughter and blue for my youngest son. I thought all the newish Stampedes came with wheelie bars. My 95 version didn't and was easy to flip over and roll as well. Stampede weak spots are the front caster blocks break easily and bend the hinge screws. Upgrading to hinge pins with C clips is better, but aluminum caster blocks are the best option. I agree the rear motor placement kills handling. I looked at the Gorgon but don't care for the battery compartment on bottom setup. I'm surprised it didn't pop open while bashing at the skate park. I picked up a Stampede 4x4 VXL in 2015. MUCH different beast than the 2wd version.

    Great video, Phil. Very honest, unbiased info in my opinion. I like them all. I have the Gorgon and love it. And I’ve had a few stampedes in my life (nitro way back in the late 90’s) and loved them too. I really wanted to love the jumpshot so I could convince myself I needed one. 🤣 Cause it really does look awesome. But, it was just soooo slow. I’m not one to get hung up on how fast a lot of these can go. But the Stampede and the Gorgon were just on another level compared to it. Even on 3s it looked slow. Thanks for these types of vids, Phil. 🙌🏼 😎 I always enjoy them.

  • @TheRCScotsman
    @TheRCScotsman ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Very good video and a fair conclusion.
    However, I don't completely agree. The Jumpshot is the cheapest, with the highest spec. To me, that's the definition of "value for money". I'd have put that as 1st for VFM, with the Gorgon 2nd. This would have left the HPI & Arrma on an even 13 points, which I think it absolutely spot-on: one is faster, lots of fun out of the box and more bash-orientated, but the spec is low. The other has a more premium feel and higher specs, but needs money spent to make it quick. To me, that's a 50/50. Cheers!

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, I mean you are right… but I think I was also taking in to account fun factor in that VFM… and anyway, the Flux is better than all of them, and in budget… I was just being kind to the Karen’s that would have said it was unfair 😅

    I believe Corally may have discontinued there 2wd trucks, parts still available at the moment though. Also you need to upgrade the main plastic diff gear in the gearbox of the brushed Jumpshot if going to brushless, the flux version comes with a metal gear stock. Having said that the metal diff gear is only just over £6 to upgrade.

    • @TheRCScotsman

  • @alantaylor353
    @alantaylor353 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With the HPI being capable of running 3S, it makes sense it would be geared lower & you'd get a lower top speed on 2S..
    I bet if you ran it with a larger pinion or on 3S it would be more or less the same as the other two..
    Also, the Traxxas comes dead last in my opinion because it's far FAR too expensive, old as sh#t, looks stupid & it's definitely not brushless ready like the other two, you'll have to spend almost £30 on a set of "super heavy duty" (😂 😂) driveshafts, then replace the shocks.!
    Also.. IT'S TOO BLOODY EXPENSIVE.!!!!!
    Gordon just takes first place... I love the HPI but I'd rather have it as a short course truck.!!

You mentioned the Stampede has cross head or phillips screws. I agree that they are not as good.. I saw a review of the basic Bandit and the reviewer pointed out that basic Bandit, Stampede, etc. are aimed at people new to r/c. These people are more likely to have a crosshead screwdriver at home. I enjoyed this affordable MT shoot out. Anyone can do a comparison on the top of the top of the line models. But these relatively in expensive models are where most of the viewers enter into the hobby. It’s best to know what’s the best r/c you can afford is when making the decision. Someone who buys a shitty r/c maybe be turned off by breaking and lack of fun and leave the hobby. These shootouts as we call them in the USA are meant to build the community. Can’t love this more. So i ask like Oliver Twist… more please

  • @Solrak8O

    Nice video as always Phil. I agree the Arrma Gorgon is the best overall truck of the three. I just kinda wished Arrma ditched the old Nicad battery and charger and put the money into upgrading to 2s brushless ESC & motor for similar money. I would even go as far as to delete the included transmitter/receiver and offer a roller with ESC and motor. It would bring the price down and reduce landfill. Lord knows I don’t need another controller kicking around the house!
    Come to think of it I don’t see the point of buying a Granite Grom at current pricing with the Gorgon around for similar money. Now if the Grom was $50 less…different story.
    And then there is Traxxas…… So out of date and they really don’t offer anything of value for people just starting out in the hobby. If they offered a kick arse entry level truck for a smaller profit margin they would gain a big brand following from people as they progress within the hobby. The game has moved on.

    Idle suggestion on these shootouts; might be fun to add a "modability" category, and give yourself a smallish budget and a timeframe to carry out a couple of basic mods (bearings, pinions, tires, 3S battery, maybe a cheap brushless combo etc); would be nice to get a bit of an idea as to how easy it it to work on the vehicles, as well as how much potential there is in them as a platform.

    The Gorgon was my first introduction into cheap beginner level RC cars so naturally I had to put a 3S system in it 😅 but overall VERY impressed and happy with the durability. It’s the only car other than the Grom I’ll take to a skatepark. Other than the battery tray breaking off a huge jump (technically it was my fault because I didn’t zip tie it in, Arrma actually includes a set with a new tray and the chassis is notched to accept it) it’s held up very well. The suspension soaks up huge jumps and looks badass around corners and landing. I ended up buying my nephew one for Christmas and had a weird issue where the remote reversed itself on the throttle. Luckily, I was able to figure it out, but only because I’ve had experience with other RTR remotes doing the same thing, but on the Gorgon, there is no throttle reverse switch.

    I enjoy my Rustler a lot more than my Stampede. Both brushless. Big issue is their shocks. They always bend, and they're expensive. I have lots of Traxxas, but lots of other brands.
    For body strength, my HPI FJ Cruiser body has taken a beating in the rocks here in Montana, but it does have some reinforcement. Only upgrades are tires and steering servo, and it performs really well, but it's smaller than my other 1/10 crawlers. Plus, it recovers really, really well! If you want a cheap crawler that does well, I'm happy. I definitely recommend masking screen with epoxy.

    I absolutely love the quality of the HPI Jumpshot flux for a few dollars more.
    The ESC & Motor run well, the quality of the plastics are up there.
    The only 3 things i dislike is the plastic Spur which is extreemly expensive to buy a steel one.
    The other issue is performance of the motor and esc is nothing like the Traxxas Vellion. With a 4000kv and 3s esc i expected alot more .
    I have bought an 84 tooth spur which may help top speed a little when it arrives.

    You should definitely do one of these videos with Short Course Trucks! (Senton vs Slash vs SC10) all at the $330 USD price point
    The Slash BL-2S is $330, but is only 2S, whereas both the Senton and SC10 are 3S 40-50mph trucks.. so maybe the VXL? It would be very overpriced but the better comparison.

    This is just my opinion but I really think that because these are out of the box testing that the HPI should be allowed to run on 3S. Since it's 3s capable, I don't think that it should be hindered by the fact being that it was designed to run on 3S also and not being allowed to in the test seems unfair. And that being said, the Traxxas should be allowed to run the speed pinion for the speed test since it actually came with it. If it was something that it didn't come with that would be a whole different subject, but due to the fact being it actually came with the speed pinion I think that it should be allowed to run it and the HPI should not be dinged for the fact being it was designed to run two and three s. I guarantee you if it was only 2S rated it would have been geared faster and be cheaper. Of course this is just my opinion. Love watching your videos. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy this type of stuff

    Very nice video you should do more of these leaderboard competitions. I think your rating is pretty fair on the driving aspect, but I would like to throw in some remarks. I don’t see the Phillips screws as a bad think. These cars are made for beginners and kids. Most households have a good supply of Phillip screwdrivers so no extra expense in tools. I don’t like two in one esc if you want to upgrade to brushless you need a new radio. Lastly the you criticised the Traxxas radio for being old but the hpi radio is almost old enough to drink.
