Glad you enjoyed it. Yep, definitely can't beat the old stuff, I prefer it over anything new. But finding parts can be tough, I have an old Briggs and Stratton engine that needs a tank. I patched it for now so I can use it (it's on a compactor), but I'm debating on finding another tank or making an aluminum tank once I get a new welder.
I love doing repairs like this around the house. I'm not sure what I'd be doing with my powerimig around. Everyone should learn how to weld in high school.
I used an angle grinder to cut the sheet metal to size, release cuts, and cut out the rust. To bent it up, just a couple blocks of wood, a couple concrete, and a hammer. Then besides using the mig welder to weld in the patch, that's it.
I'm converting a car that was originally transverse front wheel drive to use a north/south engine layout and will be making a custom subframe for the front suspension and engine mounts. I'd like it to look like it's an OEM part so being able to contour thicker gauge steel is a big step in that direction.
I used a flexible tape measure to measure around the curve, then added another 1-2 inches roughly just to be safe. Once I had the shape bent, then I placed it on the rusted area, traced it out and cut the remaining rusted area of the deck.
It looks just like a Sears deck because Roper made some of their tractors. I have one from the '80s and it looks just like it. When I run across some rusty metal (which is a lot) I give it a "Navy" paint job - but with my own twist. Sand or wire-brush the loose rust. Then prime with red oxide primer but before priming it wipe down with lots of mineral spirits and then brush on the primer while it's still wet. The primer flows into all pores and levels out great. The topcoat will look great too.
when i first seen that deck i was like WTF! lol.. but the metal work was really good impressed with the fit of the metal and attention to making it look part of the deck , not something slapped on and welded, good job, looks good !
I did the same kind of a job several times but used to leave the welding beads because they make the mower s look tough and kinda brutal:)) Also I don't have a mig-welder so I had to learn how to do this job with stick one. I have to say it wasn't easy especially when I wasn't able to find any rods thinner then 2.5 mm%))
Great job. You got a lot of good metal to weld to. For me too much pitting and too thin. I cut out side piece and got a thicker patch and the length is 3 inch overlap and I'm just going to pop rivet sides and metal patch, por 15, fiber glass inside. Weld some tabs to make it structurally sound. @nd hand deck, not maintained at all. No metal means pop rivet , weld best u can. Nice to see professional job.
I have built a small welder to weld the tabs on ni-cad. batteries. I want to make welding rods out of my tig wire. Can i coat them with something to act as insulation?
i HAVE TO DO THE SAME WITH MY Cub Cadet but the bad spots are mainly where the pulleys tie into. I think I'm going to try and make a new deck. I will probably be easier.
After thought.. Who are these miserable people that go around clicking thumbs down on excellent videos, such as this one, all over You Tube?? A bunch of douche bags if you ask me..
Gonna have to check out more of your videos before I tackle my own here. The patch adds character for sure, you recon bondo will help get rid of the seams that can be sorta be seen? Cheers.
In order to smoothen out those welds, ensure they are ground smooth, use an epoxy primer to seal the surface and then add body filler, smoothen out with sanding, after that a high filler primer and then smoothen out again before applying paint.
Nice job EXCELLENT demo….covered the subject in minimal time. Other TH-camrs should follow note. I do not need to know their life history making a 2 minute demo stretch to 15-20 minutes !

I mean, sure a "new" deck would be expensive, but in most places in America you could find a used one in the junk, and if not, just throw a fucking mat of fibreglass on it, or even glue a piece of plastic on there with epoxy. At the end of the day, you don't want to baby a massed produced Chinese crapper.

for this mower deck he could have, but he used a MIG process. For thin metal, like on cars, you would want to use mig or tig while only doing small welds at a time as to not melt the metal.
Very nicely done! A few questions, if you will??? I presume you were using a 110 V DC Mig/Fluxcore welder with fluxcore wire only, there fore a fluxcore process without the Argon? Also what Fluxcore wire alloy did you use and recommend?? Thank you very much as I have a mower deck and a small mig/fluxcore welder that I'm learning with. Also an AC only fluxcore wire welder in reserve.
+kiotipass Thank you. Yes it's a 110v flux-core mig welder so no argon but AC. The flux-core takes place of the argon shielding so it's a different welding wire than compared to what is used in an argon application. I have used argon in the past and my welder can be converted to argon as well. Flux-core wires are only available in different diameters as far as I know and will depend on what size is required for your welder. Smaller diameter wire tends to weld better though.

+4DIYers Apologize for my slow response. Had a few days to meditate on this. Trying to determine the settings that you used? It appears that your lincoln output voltage is DC. I presume you are using the DC output. No problem with that. However, with that said, you are using the fluxcore wire with the DC setup on your Lincoln. This is the question are you using DCEP or DCEN???? polarity for the Fluxcore wire when welding the deck with your Lincoln?? The polarity can be set either way on your Lincoln. Hope that this question is better formulated and will be able to be explained for this senior citizen. Thank you so much for your patience & understanding! KK
+kiotipass I believe mine operates on DCEP judging by the diagram, but I've honestly never looking into that aspect too much. I did use the welder on the high setting. Sorry I can't be much more help than that and glad to help out.
Haha, can't beat a good excuse to buy new tools ;) I was going to buy a tig welder for doing custom exhaust instead of paying someone, but the unfortunately part is I don't have a proper place to store it.

Have you priced a new deck lately? Can be 100's of dollars, even if you could find them for older equipment. This guy saved some dough, big time. :)

Good job ! I have a small welding and fab shop, customers bring in abused decks like this. I get at least $200 for welding in patches no paint.
