I posted this video yesterday but I didn't realize it was the UNEDITED file. I'm embarrassed as hell lol. I decided to sacrifice the views that one had in order to put up the correct video. I can't have the first episode of Ladies Night looking low effort when it wasn't! Much love and sorry for the double upload.

Bro, I'm gonna keep it all the way real with you. I've seen quite a few reactions to this song and pretty much all of them take a pretty similar course. Tatiana's vocal abilities are crazy. But your reaction, is freaking wonderful. So genuine. Growling, screaming vocals are polarizing and we both know a pretty fair amount of black folks ain't into it. I love that you're open to it and actually respect her ability. Well done my friend.

to reiterate from the first upload 2 points about the vocals:
    1. the "growling" voice she uses is a special technique that doesn't use the vocal chords (because you would damage them) but by pressing air through the diaphragm (somewhat similar to burping, but not from the stomach but the lungs) and using the lips and tounge to form the words. Switching from that to regular singing (using vocal chords) is really hard and quite impressive
    2. Most people when singing don't have an accent since you focus much more on the pronounciation and the sounds of the language than you do with regular speaking. Tons of Singers have strong Southern or even French/British accents in normal talking that just disappear when singing.
If you want another cool example of woman doing these sorts of vocals and switching between styles i can also recommend "Panophobia" by The Agonist. The vocalist for that song went on to sing for one of the most famous female-vocals Death-Metal Bands around "Arch Enemy" ("The Eagle flies Alone" by that Band is absolutely amazing).

I'll comment... again. I'm glad you did Jinjer "Pisces", because it's a must for every reaction channel.
My next suggestion would be "Glory Box" by Portishead. Beth Gibbons is the vocalist. They are classified as trip hop, alternative rock, psychedelic rock... and a few other things by Wikipedia. Great band, cool vibe...

🔥Welcome to Jinjer, Rob! I just found your channel, saw your Jinjer reaction and subbed, great reaction! It's always fun seeing people new to Jinjer, but your energy is awesome! Thank you for bringing the fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! I love their energy, how tight they are, how down to earth they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics! She wrote two thirds of this song and then asked the bass player Eugene to help finish it since he's also a Pisces.
The first time I heard Pisces in 2019, I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band (Pisces has been my wake up alarm for a few years and I still love it more every time I hear it, snooze is a thing of the past).
TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂
Sorry for the long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs!
My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and "that was more unexpected than my first child" 🤣
All four current members of Jinjer have essentially no formal musical training except Vlad the drummer who studied classical piano. For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit for her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and classical piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the latest album Wallflowers. Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs.
Jinjer has been a tour-heavy band, touring almost nonstop from 2013 to 2020 and much of the time since then (with interruptions by covid and the US backed coup/proxy war), hard work that has made them fantastic live performers. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk) in 2008 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members and you can see their former guitarist turned actor, Dmitry Oksen, in older videos on guitar and a more recent video (Disclosure) playing an interrogator.
One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, Dip A Sail, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that could do well together in one reaction if you're so inclined).
I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken 2019, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official is the studio audio with some great footage from several shows), Judgement & Punishment (official and/or Tatiana's one take performance, again both must-see), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, a third where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video).
Thank you, Rob! I hope you'll keep trying out more Jinjer songs and enjoy! ❤🖤🤘

Whoever you are, I dig your comment. Same. I tend to go on and on and on about Jinjer. See what I did there? I threw in an extra "on" 😂
You're a fan like me. Can't get enough Jinjer. I wake up early every morning, roll over and grab my phone, and search on Jinjer in TH-cam. Most mornings it's Pisces. Those first few beautiful guitar notes from Roman have got to be the best sounds to open a song ever. I hear those notes and my heart instantly melts, every single time.
My band played a benefit last weekend, and as we were setting up for soundcheck, the sound guy was playing music on his phone. It was pretty good metal and I was kinda checking it out. Then Pisces came on. Instant heart melt. I put down my bass, walked over to him and said "Dude that's my favorite song. Just saw these guys live a few weeks ago."
Don't ever stop commenting! Nobody ever likes my long ass comments, but I do it anyway. Every once in a while I get in a good conversation!
Thanks for the great comment. Go Jinjer Army! Slava Ukraine!

Great to see you do this, I'm here for this concept!
Tatiana is fantastic: she's got some power, she's got a great range of tones when she's doing her growl and she knows how to use them, and it's actually pretty clear what she's singing while growling too, which more than a few singers give up on when they growl.
Great reaction, I can feel the joy!

Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) A few tidbits I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. Another bit of info: This video was made to highlight their new drummer, who has had no formal training in drums - he is a classically trained pianist who taught himself so he could play in Jinjer. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. Welcome to Jinjer!

I'd love to see you check out the band Kittie next for Ladies Night! They were a pretty big deal when they hit the metal scene in the early 2000s and are still releasing music today. The song "Brackish" is a classic. I'm also a big fan of "What I Always Wanted" and "Until the End".

"Ladies Night" is a good idea.
Jinjer is love. Jinjer is life. the traditional next step is _Perennial_ live at Wacken 2019 ; but i think _Teacher Teacher_ is in order here.
another band that will remind you of them is Spiritbox.
for THE premier ladies band, check The Warning , _Evolve_ live at MTV VMAs will blow your socks off.
that ought keep you busy for a minute .... once this series gets rolling, i'll hit you with the horde of japanese female rock bands that are taking over the world.
HOWEVER, if you want to merge this series with your "white boy music" series (or whatever you call it), i think you HAVE TO check out Babymetal x Electric Callboy _Ratatata_ .

There's TWO versions of Judgement and Punishment... the actual music video (cool one too) has lines where her accent is very noticeable. By the time she did the One Take version of the song (also super cool) the accent has faded quite a bit. I'd take a look at both eventually. Fun band with interesting sound. Thanks for the reaction!!

  • @frankh9600
    @frankh9600 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Ladies night,why not?
The growling is not through vocal folds but through the above tissue referred to as false folds. Historically, this is a proper technique in a lot of cultures called throat singing.
Regarding Jinjer exploration do Perennial Live Wacken open air 2019 or her one take vocal performance of Judgement and Punishment.
Similar camp is Spiritbox. Do Rule of Nines one take vocal performance. Their dirtiest sharp short piece is Holy Roller OMV is pure fun.
    All the Ladies' vocals.

The lyrics should read "Scale armour belies virgin innocence" which makes much more sense. Yes, Tatiana writes the lyrics.
There are quite a few women in metal who can do this. Metalheads look at this as being routine. Some of these women have had classical training and they combine that with typical metal distortion or growls. Floor Jansen, for example, can cut between an operatic technique and a death metal growl in the span of a single note. I won't add links as YT will cut my post, but I'll leave you with a list for your ladies night.
Nightwish, Floor Jansen, "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken Open Air 2013 in front of 82,000 fans
Brittney Slayes, Unleash the Archers, "Awakening" full band play through
Alissa White-Gluz, Arch Enemy, "Nemesis" live at Wacken Open Air 2016
Simone Simons, Epica, "Consign to Oblivion" live at the Zenith, Paris
Courtney Laplante, Spiritbox, "Holy Roller" music video
Tarja Turunen with Alissa White-Gluz, "Demons in You" live
Christina Scabbia, Lacuna Coil, "Reckless" live at Hellfest, France
Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation, "And We Run" featuring xzibit
Melissa Bonny, Ad Infinitum "See You in Hell" music video
Elize Ryd, Amaranthe, "Amaranthine" music video
That should keep you going for a little while . . .

Successful harsh vocalists are usually one or more of several techniques that use completely different parts of the throat than normal singing, which is how they manage to keep doing it without losing their voice
