Even year 3 you could release/trade him but with a $30M cap hit. So, if Cousins plays as you THINK he will when you signed him, Pennix doesn't see the field until he's 26. It just makes no sense no matter HOW you try to justify the pick.
I think anyone that understands NFL lost faith in their decision making. Breaking the bank and making this pick when you don't even have a defense... this equals blowing leads remember 28 3
For so many years I've been disappointed with the draft picks but this is the first year that I've been ANGRY. I WAS excited to go to a game this year BUT after last night, I'm saving my money.
Penix will be ok so give him time to assimilate into Falcons nation. We still need a deep threat wide receiver.Ridder never had good quarterback tutelage.
I think if anyone looks at the depth of talent in this year's draft. You'd know and understand why they chose a talent like Penix at 8. There's good CBs, DLs, EDGs, and WR left. There's even guys on the edge that has real potential of being double digit sacks players. Hell, I believe if we start AK, giving him majority of the reps. He could probably get the doubles. That's what we drafted him to be. Arthur and company was just overdoing it with personal changes every other play. I believe Penix can actually be as efficient (in his own way) as all the othe QBs that was drafted before him. If Kirk performs as expected. We're not drafting in the top 10 anytime soon. And they'll be teams beneath us clamoring for a QB. Kirk is going to be here for at least 2 years. If he something goes wrong. We'd have a successor.
MPJ is a winner. He will win a lot of games in a Falcons jersey. And he will prove the naysayers and doubters wrong. He'll end up being a grand slam pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. I personally believe he was the best QB in the nation the last 2 years for Washington. I believe Caleb Williams will be a massive bust. So will Jayden McDaniels. Drake Maye will be good. But MPJ will be the best QB out if this draft. Check me in 5 years if I'm wrong.
Give them a chance guys. You will love this pick few years down the road…don’t forget we might not get an opportunity to draft Kirk’s replacement next 2 years especially if we are penalized next year. I was upset as well when we made the pick but thinking about it more I believe this is a smart move
Smart pick. How can nobody see it? We have had terrible qb play for years and it’s been so frustrating. We secured the future. I like the pick and the vision.
Got the 5th QB who nobody else was chasing. He's also already had 2 ACL tears. 2 injury prone QBs and now Heineke is getting paid 5 million to play QB coach?
This was a stupid decision you pay Kirk cousins for at least 3 years if he’s great by time it’s time for Michael penix to play you’ll have to pay him so no rookie contract flexibility
The owner wanted Kirk Cousins for stability even for a high price, that's why they gave him the deal. Michael Penix is who the coaches wanted. First QB since Mahomes to throw more than 4500+ yards in consecutive years. He even threw for 4000+ yards in an injury year at Indiana., came back after four injuries to lead to playoff finals.
I guess I shouldn’t expect unbiased analysis from a group of people who pretty much work for the Atlanta Falcons. The truth is Atlanta is paying a bridge QB 180 million dollars after they have hyped us up for months saying they brought Kirk here to try and win a championship, and instead of using that 8th over all pick to draft a immediate impact player they drafted Kirk’s replacement. Please make it make sense because I can’t!
Just think Atlanta fans a couple of months ago it looked like the Falcons were going to have a pro bowl caliber quarter back and the greatest coach of all time. Now we are left with this and will have one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL again. Bad coach and bad team management leads to this.
This model only works if the quarterback you’re drafting is young and not injury prone and if there is a proven coaching staff that can develop quarterbacks
Lets be truthful for a second, Kirk Cousins has no team loyalty and is all about the bag. Its silly to think that Atlanta doesn't notice the energy of what Kirk leaving Minnesota means for their future as he is ALWAYS chasing bags. They simply felt the bag at the time was worth competing now and taking their only opportunity to have a top 10 QB pick in the near future now as they expect to not have that good of a pick for a long time.
Ya, why don’t you talk to the fan base that has supported you for over half a century and tell them how dumb they are for not knowing all the “ins and outs” of football while we’ve had to put up with a losing franchise forever! Make it make sense…
No, you're going to be THANKING them if/when Kirk is injured. There is no guarantee he will start this year, he's coming off achilles repair and is 36.
Who you would have picked lol them defensive guys all dropped 😂 so who would you have picked?? Keep in mind Penix was going top half of 1st round Regardless
This was Raheem Morris and Fontenot idea to revisit the Michael Vick era trying win over the Fan base for job security for the sake of "The culture " Raheem said as much when he was hired. Otherwise they still could have addressed the QB position later in the draft just not at 8th overall 🤷!
@@Terrytimemedia Not mad just an very astute observation that's all. Just don't like penix pick at 8. If it was later in the draft fine. Now if we didn't sign Kirk and chose penix at 8 and used that money 💰 to beef both Offensive line and the defense I would be fine with the draft pick.
I liked the pick. It's what everyone said when Greenbay drafted Aaron Rodgers...when the last time we had 2 good QB's. We have 3 more picks to pick defense players
True and the falcons got 8 more picks so we can fill in them holes on defense and somewhere else they may not be a lottery pick but a future building stone for this franchise
Drafting a backup QB in the 20s is a whole lot different than drafting one in the 8 spot! Especially when your team is not an established winning program at the time of doing it.
Although I am not EXCITED about the pick, I understand it. This is Morris/Fontenot putting their money where their mouth is. They say the team is ready and able to win NOW. They really believe Cousins can take them to the playoffs and beyond. Being a playoff team, they would be picking in the bottom half of the draft each year (the more you win, the further back you draft). VERY hard to get a franchise QB if you are picking that late in the draft.....costs too much to move up. If you think Penix is that guy, you get him while you are here and put him in your pocket. Kirk is a 3 year plan at BEST, and if he is balling out as they EXPECT him to, they won't be able to draft his replacement in 3 years, unless they go with a Ridder-esk 3rd round project and hope he can develop. WAIT....they tried that......they had the 8th pick due to their less than stellar win/loss record. I think they DO believe in Kirk, and thats why they grabbed Penix now.
Not worth much but Atlanta just acquired a million new fans. Will buy the NFL package hoping he gets in the games early. Washington loves this kid and he is a great kid and we know how luck you are to have him.
I don't really like it, but he can learn from Kirk, and it can't hurt to have a QB with some wheels for some 3rd and short situations. Can open up a lot of different plays....
@Otisth3God I'm talking about the same thing you are. He'll be healthy when he plays just like Penix. Only difference is a few years in age a d Penix has a worse injury history.
I think that after what we did to him n if he wants out, then we should do the right thing n trade him to where he wants to go n play the rookie good or bad . Terry u knew this could happen when u draft a qb 8 overall so do the right thing. If Kirk wants to play then play him 4 two yrs then we can release him n play the rookie
fans are upset cause ATL just shat on their daft day joy. every team fan got a chance to see how a top ten pick will start on their team. falcons now are being sold it was a good pick cause 3 years down the line its gonna pay off. they sign an injury ridden vet qb then a top 10 injury ridden qb, lol. the brunette is during her best to talk the truth without getting fired from the podcast, lol.
The Falcons could have drafted a cat and this panel would defend it. Just spent your first round pick on a backup for a guy with injury issues that you just payed a truckload of money, with a guy with injury issues. I mean damn.
So if you remember Tom Brady went to the Patriots right when Drew Bledsoe signed a huge contract. That turned out OK! Penix is good. Its a good choice. And I went to WSU who was the rival school to Washington. But one quarterback played better than Penix last year and thats Cam Ward who was at WSU but now transferred to Miami. Look him up
"They want to build confidence from the fans in what the team is doing" You certainly failed. I don't think this fanbase has been less confident and more angry than right now
Really good point Tori makes about ‘confidence.’ Atlanta fans are chronically morose, and still feeling cursed by the 2017 SB. It is almost impossible for many of us to believe. Fontenot and Morris together could change that. I think they’re on the way. Falcons fans need to start believing again. Things will change soon.

Fotenot and Morris completely lost the team and fans with a draft of a prospect to sellout Cousins who they have zero faith in.
Speak for yourself
I think anyone that understands NFL lost faith in their decision making. Breaking the bank and making this pick when you don't even have a defense... this equals blowing leads remember 28 3
@@MA5UM73 But 28-3 was before Fotenot and Morris wasn't a factor in that either, so your point is stupid.
For so many years I've been disappointed with the draft picks but this is the first year that I've been ANGRY. I WAS excited to go to a game this year BUT after last night, I'm saving my money.
Stop thinking we are one defensive player away from greatness because we aren’t. Ask the 49ers and the eagles.
Paid Kirk $180 mill just to draft a guy top 8 to back him up 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This was a stupid decision you pay Kirk cousins for at least 3 years if he’s great by time it’s time for Michael penix to play you’ll have to pay him so no rookie contract flexibility
Raheem will get Fired and the new coach will be trading Penix for a 4th round pick lol
Lol learn for a few years? Bruh is older by the time his rookie contract is done he'll be nearly 30. 😬😬
We'll probably end up trading him for a round 4 pick after Raheem gets fired.
KIRK IS NOT GOING TO TEACH HIS REPLACEMENT
7:31 _Mariota & Ridder didn't work out because of Arthur Smith._
Just think Atlanta fans a couple of months ago it looked like the Falcons were going to have a pro bowl caliber quarter back and the greatest coach of all time. Now we are left with this and will have one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL again. Bad coach and bad team management leads to this.
Brilliant move by the Falcons !
I know it's not the most popular pick but I'm gonna try to see the positive in this pick
I love the pick
How what positive is coming from this we now have a Very mad $100 million quarterback.
@@thePOw3rman So which team are you reading for the Saints or Tampa Bay or Carolina fan. They quite happy right now since.
The only positive is that eventually it might get Morris and Fontano fired
@@kevindog5080 falcons fan, stop being such a crybaby, it’s a good pick
We have seen this model work before. Let’s stop being short minded folks! Our future is set at QB!
This model only works if the quarterback you’re drafting is young and not injury prone and if there is a proven coaching staff that can develop quarterbacks
Those had defense and competent leadership 😉
We’ve seen it fail far more than it has worked…
Lets be truthful for a second, Kirk Cousins has no team loyalty and is all about the bag. Its silly to think that Atlanta doesn't notice the energy of what Kirk leaving Minnesota means for their future as he is ALWAYS chasing bags. They simply felt the bag at the time was worth competing now and taking their only opportunity to have a top 10 QB pick in the near future now as they expect to not have that good of a pick for a long time.
As a UW fan, the only way MP doesn’t end up a Top 5 NFL QB is if he has a career ending injury. His arm talent is second to none.
We'll win now and later, great pick
7-10 here we come
Please. Pleassssssssse. Don't let us go 7-10 again. I'm going to have to pack my football fandom up.
What have the falcons won?
@@gimmedaloota top 10 draft pick 4 years in a row 😂
If you chase 2 cats, you will catch neither.
Browns and Bears been looking for a qb for 30 years ya'll trippin
Ya, why don’t you talk to the fan base that has supported you for over half a century and tell them how dumb they are for not knowing all the “ins and outs” of football while we’ve had to put up with a losing franchise forever! Make it make sense…
Lmfao yall are talking about the number 8 pick sitting on the bench for 3 years and being traded. That’s how we want to justify this? So unserious
Wait till they find out there’s 3 more drafts until kirk contract is over lol, we didn’t need mpj
EVERYONE IS LAUGHING I
AT USSSSSS
_WHO DAT!_
No, you're going to be THANKING them if/when Kirk is injured. There is no guarantee he will start this year, he's coming off achilles repair and is 36.
Trust the process bro. This really is a game changer in a good way. Bro really is one of the best qbs in this draft
They’ve done that since 28-3
We gone have the last laugh 💯🛫
Falcons are now officially broken and now absolutely need a complete rebuild from the owner to the press. A complete cleanse.
Word is this came from Arthur.
U sound mad✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Y’all wait til later yall get another riddler ! Kirk not that good James ! 15 yrs one playoff win , you think it’s just gonna change ?
@@Terrytimemedia Not mad just an very astute observation that's all. Just don't like penix pick at 8. If it was later in the draft fine. Now if we didn't sign Kirk and chose penix at 8 and used that money 💰 to beef both Offensive line and the defense I would be fine with the draft pick.
We absolutely stole headlines at the draft we’ll leave it at that
Love this pick!
Welcome to Atl, Penix!!!!
You don’t know penix is good.
Drafting a backup QB in the 20s is a whole lot different than drafting one in the 8 spot! Especially when your team is not an established winning program at the time of doing it.
Pennix lost to Desmond Ridder lmao We're screwed.
@@jonvandenberg5065 love was also 3 years younger…
Be honest guys this pick made zero sense and the rest of the league is laughing at us.
As a bears fan. I feel sorry your managers are so terrible. You could have got the best edge or took Odunze from us which will likely be a pro bowler
Stop Tripping don't have the best QB room in the NFL, who gives a screw what they think😂😂😂
Inept is the word to describe us.
@@trevorredlarczyk5057u dysfunctional bear's better hope u don't destroy Williams like u did the last 4 QBs u drafted, 😂😂😂😂😂 gtfoh 😂😂
As a raider fan thank you for taking him. I was hoping we couldn't take Bo or Penix and y'all saved us lol. Thank you falcons!!
People this pick makes sense. You have young guy coming in to sit and learn behind Kirk is that so hard to understand
Compare the draft room celebration when they drafted Ridder to last night. Terrifying.
You guys blowing smoke
So you're telling me that they do all this "due diligence" and still make stupid decisions? Wow😂
Kirko had himself a tantrum. Penix might take some of kirkos big cake.
Terry should run the CIA, no leaks at all. Shocked the world 🎉, that was definitely successful.
Not worth much but Atlanta just acquired a million new fans. Will buy the NFL package hoping he gets in the games early. Washington loves this kid and he is a great kid and we know how luck you are to have him.
xD
Penix is the best QB in the class, good get if it were not for all the money spent on Cousins, which could have been spend on other FAs.
They won't make the same mistake twice.... they'll make totally new ones.
I’m with Derek on this
Tori what are your thoughts on former SanDiego State qb Mayden??
Sorry, but this rationalization of the dumb this decision is futile. Falcons messed up this pick
I like the pick of penix
Don't get me wrong
Penix is type of qb who should start right away
LOL,.Then the Falcons have a $150 mil Back-up,.
Only a Falcons fan can rationalize STUPIDITY~
I don't really like it, but he can learn from Kirk, and it can't hurt to have a QB with some wheels for some 3rd and short situations. Can open up a lot of different plays....
Y can’t people realize that was just the first round, the draft come on tdy, it’s not the end of the world
I love it
It’s 4500 yards not 4000 you exclusivity higher
Remember Charles told you if they get Kirk Cousins the Falcons can double dip
QB shouldn’t be a issue for awhile it’s strange how comfortable we are with a Older QB off of a Achilles
Yeah, better get a rookie with a bad knee and shoulder 😂
Yah now we have a QB with 2 ACL tears. Shoulder Tear. Shoulder Dislocation. While Heineke is on the roster for 5 million to play QB Coach?
Penix is healthy right now , Kirk is not lol you guys are the type to get married with no prenup
Always insure yourself
@@MumRah He’s healthy as of me writing this lol what are you talking about.. Kirk is still injured as of me writing this
@Otisth3God I'm talking about the same thing you are.
Pennix already beat the #1 pick last year ! This isnt as bad as people think < Especially if kirk gets Hurt again !
He also lost to Desmon Ridder in 2021 xD
Why yal on here hating we good die heart fan we lit 🔥🔥🔥🔥so save the small talk and stop hating we good
Kirk Cousins need that push/pressure... If we make the playoffs, maybe he wont choke or Penix will be our next starting QB sooner🤷🏿♂️
I like the pick personally
We good for the next 12-15 years 🤷♂️🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️ one bowl seems good enough for a team that’s never won, but I believe we get one with Kirk and then get two or three with Penix. Rise up!!!!
It’s not the pick we deserve but it’s the pick we need
I understand the succession plan but does it have to be in the first year when he has not thrown a single ball and when focus would have been to give him weapons now to go make a difference . That’s why we are surprised - what if those positions cause you to lose games this year.
