The Tower of Su Pottu, also called Torre di Cabras or Torre del Porto, is part of the one hundred and five fortifications of Sardinia, dating back to the period of Spanish domination and forming part of a complex coastal defensive system, with the aim of protecting the hinterland from frequent incursions by Barbary pirates.
It was built, according to the "Carta di Rocco Cappellino", around 1577. Situated on the banks of the Pond of Cabras, the Tower of Su Pottu was a tower of the "sencillas" type, i.e. it remained in contact with the other towers through smoke signals.
The entrance, at a height of 3.30 m above ground level, was accessible by a removable staircase and only later was the present one built in concrete.
Disused, like most Sardinian towers shortly after 1843, the Tower of Su Pottu was one of the towers of the defensive system of Cabras which included the towers of San Giovanni, Capo San Marco and Seu. With the latter it could communicate in a constant way with direct visual contact.
The tower is made of a limestone structure of modest dimensions, has a truncated cone shape, typical for constructions of this type, has a diameter of 7.60 metres and a total height of 8.20 metres. The inner room has a domed ceiling, it has a kitchen fireplace and also niches that were probably used as a pantry.
Above there is a lookout terrace, that is, a parade ground accessible by a steep staircase in the walls. The parapet has three openings for housing the cannons. The parade ground of the tower of Su Pottu offers a panoramic view of most of the Gulf of Oristano.
Thanks to all those who provide video footage.
