- On July 4, 1997, NASA's Mars Pathfinder lander and Sojourner rover successfully landed on the Red Planet utilizing a revolutionary airbag landing system. This special 20th anniversary show chronicles the stories and the people behind the groundbreaking mission that jump-started 20 years of continuous presence at Mars. Guests include: Former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin, former JPL Directors Ed Stone and Charles Elachi, JPL Director Michael Watkins and Pathfinder mission team members Jennifer Trosper and Brian Muirhead. Recorded June 27, 2017 at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory; aired on NASA TV on July 4, 2017.

The 1997 Pathfinder was the first Mars surface images since the Viking Landers. The airbag thing worked, the package unravelled correctly, and the rover rolled down correctly. The first rover, Soujourner. It went for about 10 yards. It had provision to climb over objects but if it flipped it was history. They had some kid sending commands to it and it would take 8 minutes for each command to move it a few millimeters. He impacted some nearby rock [ authorised manouver ]. Several billion dollars to have a wide panorama view of two hills in the Martian distance, one pointy, the other flat-topped.

Gosh, this is friggen epic. Too bad it took me till now to find it. Pathfinder was one of the most important missions for me as a young person, so it is very fascinating to hear this and learn more about the context.
Just a curiosity: the narrator is the same one that explain the codex in Mass Effect games.
Just one more thing to love about NASA.

All this exploration and science that made America in the eyes of the world truly great. Yet some Washington entities don't have this congressional oversight and budget cuts....How can that be ?
Pathfinder will greatly be missed. I would be pretty cool if a Astronaut could recover the lander when we make it to Mars.

At the instant 56:58 of this video, I seem to see, I am not saying that it is, in the center of the photo, a vapor pressure outlet from the rocks ( ice crystals ?, CO2?, ...), on the left what could be the fall of water from a dam.
I have even imagined a rock being launched from the wall. ( right down next some shape of stone like a tongue )
A video sequence to show "things that move" on Mars would be great.
An orbiter moves very fast, it may not be able to take a sequence of frames at the same instant.
