Being a widowed mom of 3, I appreciate this so much. You have no idea. My daughter is taking up the alto 🎷 and I can’t afford what they are offering at school. The cheapest option they have (used) is 1050$. So you can imagine what they want for a new one. Not that we care about that aspect. Just hate not knowing if she would even like it, and spending so much. So if we can get a decent one for less than 300$, I’m game! I played the violin as a kid then the tuba in high school. Along with choir. She missed out last year on band (for obvious reasons). Finding you was a blessing 🙏🏻. If we the most I need to do is get a new mouthpiece (which I was going to have to regardless, if buying used) this is perfect. I just can’t say thank you enough. I was looking on Amazon and not knowing what on Earth that price would sound like....would I love to be able to buy her an expensive one...of course....but I’m just trying to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. So 1000$ was just something I couldn’t do. But also didn’t want her to be made fun of. (She gets enough of that the way it is)( as do many kids) I’m sorry. I just wanted you to know how thankful I was.
Lazarro Professional Eb E Flat Alto Saxophone is a better student instrument for the money. It's only $269.99 and sounds great. Has no leaks while playing.
I was looking for a review on this instrument specifically and fortunately I found your review right away, you were very thorough and left me with no questions about it whatsoever. And you ma'am, are very pleasant and I thank you very much for taking the time to make this video!
This lifted my spirits this morning Sweet Sis. Our own mini concert. I’m here for it all. Now if we can get that beautiful voice next! Love you much! 🙏🏼🥰😍♥️😘💋⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you sister for this review. Im 52 and just purchased this sax. I have never played and didn't want to try and learn on an expensive horn and your review gives me some peace about this cheaper instrument 😊
I didn’t know you played the saxophone as well. Wow, you’re super talented I play sax too!thanks for the video I was looking at a very similar horn on Amazon it wasn’t sure if I should purchase from them. I’ve been playing saxophone for some time now and want to get back into playing. Thank you for the inspiration.
Now that you have had it for a minute, I would like to know how the key action has held up and have you had any issues with intonation. Did you get a complete setup on it and if you did, how is the playability after?
Jay Metcalf has stated several times on his channel that the myth of newer Chinese saxophones breaking down is false. However, this was the case for Chinese made saxophones decades ago.
Well, bugger me! I just found this vid after buying a cheap starter sax from Walmart. This comes with a lot of items the one I bought doesn't and Amazon would have come faster. Oh well. Thanks for the review and the mini concert. Cheers!
I have never picked up a sax. When it comes to mouthpieces on the cheaper saxs I’ve heard are all not the best. What kind a mouthpiece should I add to it?
The only thing I can recommend is to never put the mouthpiece on while the neck is attached to the horn. That can bend the neck very easily on the really cheap saxes.
I can do the same with drums. You can make them sound good if you know what you are doing. I am interested in this sax for myself just to learn an instrument. :) It sounds great. You have nice tone!
Thank you so much for this! I am considering getting this one for my daughter who is transitioning from the clarinet in intermediate band this year. I wanted to buy something as a "trial run."
I played a Conn e flat alto when I was in grade school...1st chair,4,5,6 (all 3 grades in one band) and part of 7th grade, as well as 1st chair in City wide band. (4,5, and 6 grade from all district 7 schools...I think 6 or 7 schools) then I discovered there was life outside of band. I am 73 now and want so badly to re learn a few notes, possibly to be able to play something at my 55-year HS reunion. Listening to the first review of a Mendini I heard some sour notes and some flat sounding midrange notes. (maybe a bad key pad. What is your true opinion of the Mendini? What is the base material these sax's made of? Thanks. Ron PS So far I am impressed. The first reviewer accidently screeched a cpl notes. I like what I am hearing. My horn had a collar on the neck that was twisted to tune. I remember the main band leader testing us all out (about 90 kids in City Wide) before a concert and I loved that band over all.) I can't say I wish I had never quit. Bit I do say I wish that I had thought about restarting sooner. I have a special problem though. I have to wear dentures. Any suggestions?
Ensure your dentures fit well. Experiment with positioning for comfort. Consider using a mouthpiece cushion. Practice adjusting your embouchure. Take breaks if needed. Consult your dentist for further guidance if you experience persistent discomfort.
OK, some observations. These are cheap, both pricewise and from a manufacturing standpoint. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. It's not how it plays out of the box but how it's going to play six months from now. A bad playing horn leads to frustration and that's why most beginners quit in the first year. The tester didn't play any low or high notes which are the most difficult for the beginner to play. She couldn't get the mouthpiece on the horn far enough so the intonation was extremely flat. And there was no discussion on the ergonomics or build quality. I've been playing the saxophone for over 50 years and my advice is go find a used Yamaha 26 for $500 and you will have a good quality horn.
Dam I wish I seen this video, I bought this same sax 2 weeks ago. It finally came yesterday so I've run into the same issues as you. I thought I was playing bad but it's definitely the mouth piece that's making it sound off
You can go on Amazon and check out the Yamaha 4c or 5c. Very affordable and good mouthpieces. Yamaha Alto Sax mouthpieces are designed to produce a well-balanced tone with all the flexibility the player requires. The 4C has a moderately narrow sized tip opening for easy response and clear tone, and the 5C has a moderate sized tip opening allows for greater volume and projection and a rich tone quality.
Order yourself some thin mouthpiece patches ( cushions ) for your mouthpiece . It will allow you to rest your top teeth on the beak of the mouthpiece and not dig into the plastic/rubber . Vandoren or BG has them ( Amazon or any online music store ) . They come in different thicknesses, but I prefer the thin ones .
Happy -2- know I made a good purchase for my -2- sons got them for Christmas they love them😃😃lesson starts on February can’t wait to see and here. Them get into them💜🌹stay safe sis💯💯
Thanks for all the info! I wonder if Cecilio and "Eastar" are the same company, because I bought one of their cheap student trumpets, and it sounded surprisingly good
Doesn't matter what company brand you buy on these cheap Saxophones anymore They all come out of the same Asian factory Worked on by the same staff. Slight variations that the brand ask for directly... But otherwise Same saxophone from the same factory, even if the brand is from somewhere in Europe... It was still made in Asia lol The market isn't the same as it was 10 years ago... Cheaper instruments are good quality today, thanks to Chinese slavery camps... sorry I meant Chinese factories lol They can make things so cheap and so fast
A better mouthpiece is the easiest, most economical way to liven up a cheap, dull-sounding sax, as well as making it easier to play. Yamaha offers some really nice ones for the money.
@@SweetAngelMTV As a brass musician, I found mouthpiece choice can make a world of difference. I can barely play on a 5c trumpet mouthpiece (I sound like garbage that has been set on fire). Give me a Jet Tone and I sound 1000 times better with a very good range. You eluded to it in this video. I have also found that for a beginner that is not...young let us say....it is okay to start with a mid range mouthpiece. Do you feel that is the same way for woodwinds?
Great video and review! I like your style.girl! Incas hoping to see you assemble the neck to the body. I can't tighten the screws enough to keep the neck from wandering out of alignment while playing. Very annoying! Do I insert s piece of paper into the joint to make it tighter? Did you have this problem?
Why does my tenor sax have 5 pearl buttons to the left? Its been bugging me and im also new to the tenor saxophone just couldn’t help but notice mine has more buttons then other tenors.
So Would you recommend this for a beginner ? My daughter is in 9th grade and plays a Conn 8 French horn for her main instrument. She’s been wanting to get into Sax also so I’m looking for something affordable for her to learn and see if she likes it. What do you think for a beginner and trying to learn on this? Or is there something else affordable that you would recommend that’s better. The price on this is amazing. Thanks !!!
It might be a bit late for an answer. I would highly suggest this for a beginner. For a few reasons. A beginner, of any kind whether a seasoned pro on other instruments or a 6th grader, should not spend tons of money on a Yamaha beginner instrument. I purchased this sax for my son 2.5 years ago and it is still a good instrument. So, here is where the first and second parts come together. He was messing around with his friend and was not careful. The keys near the bell got mis aligned and the guard was banged in. The repair for it will cost about 250.00 usd. I paid 260.00 for it new on amazon. If you spend the 1500+ for a Yamaha beginner and the same thing happened, not only will you pay 250 for the repair, you have reduced the resale value by 200+usd. Half the value of the instrument is gone. Music stores can get away with bumping the used price up because....well...it is a music store. This advice isnt just from a practical Dad standpoint. I am a professional brass musician. My Main instrument is Trombone. I can play all the brass. Occasionally, I like to wale like Maynord Fergusen. So, I break out my Mendini Trumpet. Slap in the Jet Tone mouthpiece and play into the stratosphere. These instruments just work. Again, I know this may be a bit late. However, if your daughter wants to keep building her instrument repertoire, this will give you a bit of gum for your brain to chew on.
Thanks for your review Very well detailed. I don’t want to come across as racist, but you gotta leave it to the Chinese to come up with interesting brand names for saxes. Your mouthpiece sounds much better on that horn.
