- A historical film on the South African Air force in the 1960's showcasing aircraft that are seldom seen today, classical warbirds like the De Havilland Vampire and Avro Shackelton.
Actors and pilots - Willie van der Lingen and Toby Adelaar
My connection with aviation from this period is Flippi Looch and Charlie Wroth whom I have known for many years.
At the age of 6 I had my first flight in a DC3 around the Southern Cape Coast and at the age of 10 or there about's watching my first Mirage go mach plus and of course the sound of a Shackleton overhead was something every young boy remembers. Little did I know 8 years later I would have 4 Mirages and 13 Impala's (Bat's) at my beck and call and who can forget landing in a Flossie at a border base and the sound of the 20mm on the Alouette... we all met some amazing people in those days and who can ever forget Soutie on Alo's or Charlie Bent...we are indeed lucky to have had them in our lives. Today I appreciate the professionalism of my comrades in arms...I was indeed fortunate.
I archive old film and have been collecting films for over 30 years.
Existing libraries are rotting in city libraries and being dumped regularly and we rescue them as soon as possible.
Awesome footage, Glen. The South African Air Force had an illustriuous history... the second longest in years of operation to the Royal Air Force. The SAAF played a valuable role in WW2, including the incredibly intricate Warsaw Airlift. They played a role in the Korean War. I remember all the aircraft in this showreel, and more. One of the proudest moments for me was when all the passengers on the sinking Oceanos were saved by SAAF helicopters. I remember too when many Mozambiquans were saved from hurricane floods by the SAAF. Sadly, these days the capabilities are a fraction of what they were. Oh well!
Very valuable footage. Loved it.
Thanx for your support... would you perhaps know which Shack is in this film?
Very cool footage
Very nice footage - brings back a lot of memories. I always feel sorry for those responsible for the building and maintenance of runways. They are never mentioned, although they play an extremely important role
Did my apprentice ship in the air force and worked on them all from vampire s up to mirages where has those years gone memories
Wonderful to see. Thank you. Dankie
How times have changed! The once proud blue castle livery!! I am a proud ex SAAF member during the golden years!
Sjoe. Verlang ek na al daai mooi ou vliegtuie.
I remember seeing inside a Waterkloof hanger many Sabres in 1979. Never saw them fly.
My father worked at Ysterplaat airbase for many years. The dedication to quality work, ensuring reliable machines saved so many lives. And after going to school in the area I could soon tell the craft by the sound of it's engine.
Wonderful memories of a time long since passed! What has happened to our once illustrious Army, Air Force and Maritime Forces? How very sad for we loyal South Africans! I am 81 years young.
Did SAAF have all that ? Very interesting historical footage. Never to be seen again, sad !
and more...thanks for supporting the channel.
@CTLive Thank you. Heart sore but need to move on to reality...

@@JohnSmith-ei2pz i am from SA it was ours
@@JohnSmith-ei2pz Indeed the SAAF.....on all fronts.
@JohnSmith-ei2pz nothing to do with the RAF
@JohnSmith-ei2pz i have no expeirence of the RAF, but what does this have to do with a video about the SAAF? Or did u mean something completely different? White feather se gat, whatever u mean by that.
I tried to get into the airforce on a few occasions and they wouldn't allow me, dreams gone down the drain
Sailor Malan was an ace during WW 2. He came back and started the Torch commando.
Toe ons soewerein was en dinge gewerk het.
Now unfortunately it's not the proud outstanding Air force we once knew... It's now become All Air with no Force...😢😮😢. Can't afford the maintenance and flying skills of yesteryear... Absolutely Pathetic.🤢
Die vlieëniers word nou in Kuba opgelei.
Daai wit offisiere en onder offisiere was trots op hul werk en die SALM. Professionele soldate. Maar vandag......
So proud that they handed over the country? Joe poes man
