Saw this twice, first time when it was in previews and second time when I heard it was closing due to lack of sales. Could not understand how such a fabulous musical did not catch on with the public. With 2 great stars and Broadway legends as Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole how could it not be a success. I still play the CD when ever I want to remember the best of Broadway.
I’d argue it’s not as easily marketable to younger audiences as shows like DEH, BMC, or the like. The protagonists start off as older women, professionals who grow into their elder years and the show presents issues that young adults and teenagers have yet to encounter such as aging, being “put out to pasture” by their industry and struggling to stay relevant. I think the lack of a male lead for young female fans to fawn over may also have an effect, but that feels a bit distasteful to say.
The show did not work for two reasons. The music was just awful. Awful. The lyrics were actually clever in many places. And the problem with the book was that these two formidable ladies and two formidable actresses had no interaction until these last few minutes, a theatrical contrivance since these women never met in real life. It was like two, disjointed shows going on at the same time.
It was not very good despite the great stars and great story. LuPone's accent was not very consistent and she resorted to having some of her old diction problems when singing. But she was hilarious. The music was just horrid even though the lyrics were decent. It was pretty to look at but the fact that this was their only scene together just killed the show.
Brilliant!!! Christine Ebersole is so wonderful with a beautiful voice....and Patti LuPone is beyond a force of nature with such pathos, humor and an incredible belt! She is like a hurricane. Bravo to these girls!!
Poor Patti! Had such hip pain, she is such a trooper! I saw the show a few days before it closed and she wasn't signing autographs at the door but those of us who hung around gave her the stage door ovation you give a goddess of the theater. Thanks for posting!
I saw this prebroadway in Chicago and also in NYC after it opened. Patti and Christine were perfect together. This was my favorite show from the song even though Arden and Rubenstein never met in real life
I loved this show. You really can’t beat Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole-the best of the best! It was a brief moment of exceptional talent on Broadway and a wonderful experience at the time. Now I cherish the memory.
we went to new york for xmas so i could see this show but as we all know it closed early and i didn’t get to see it and basically thank you for these little bits at least xx
I saw this in Chicago with Patti and Christine before it went to Broadway.Seems like a lot of one-liners were added to this scene to "punch it up" for laughs. I recall their meeting as being more poignant than humorous.
Zuber's exquisite costuming, jewels... &, in contrast, the space & ascetism of the furniture... the perfection in coifing, make-up & overALL brilliant scenic ambience of this stellar production!!!♥️👍🌟💐🌹🍒👠!!!!!!
Do you have Oh, That’s Rich, Dinosaurs, Step on Out or pretty much any other bits? I’ve been searching for months for War Paint bootlegs and since you’re really putting your life in danger when recording Patti LuPone, no one really seems to do it. So if you have any more, please upload it!!
Thank you for uploading this, this will be a huge help for me for my directing class. If you have more of the show please upload it. They removed the Chicago bootleg and I haven't found any since.
I was unaware of this show until recently. bought the cd and read the book the play is based on and watched a documentary on them before listening to cd so i knew what was going on. the only thing i knew about either of them was that constable george crabtree was involved with miss arden on murdoch mysteries. fascinating women. i enjoy the musical because of the leads but i think in the second act it veers into sunset blvd. territory particularly with the orchestrations.
Dear Helen, you have NO IDEA what this means to me! I am from Belgium had tickets to go and see this show in december 2017. By then, I new the cast album by heart!!!! I was looking forward to this soooo much... then the show got cancelled early. I sent a letter to the theater for miss LuPone and got a lovely photo with autograph (without asking for it!). I know the CD by heart. It is SO NICE to be able to SEE this!! Wishing there was more though. It touches me a lot. Such a masterpiece. And these ladies! Oh! Where do I even begin??? Thank you ever so much! Love from Belgium!
A MASTERwork!!! imbued w/ the ethereal privilege! of profoundly enjoying!! 2 of the GREATest!!! Grand Dames of musical theater!! 'weave' their inimitable MAGIC on their adoring & AVID fans!!!! 🥰🎉👍🤩🎊♥️⭐ 💯% LEGENDS, both!!!!! ♥️
While I love seeing this duet, my favorite track from this score, it is still disheartening to see how many people fail to see it being recorded as not a problem. It parallels the change in values and attitude of the song, really.
Im crying right know... What will happen to our world when this women are gone? I wish that i was born in the old times where beauty is the main focuse rather than money fame and power...
This is so the opposite yellow diamond became blue diamond and white diamond became pink diamond and I can see why yellow diamond always Comfort blue diamond and now yellow will honor her and white diamond was so obsessed with pink diamond and now white diamond wants to honor pink!!!... and now both of them to honor Blue & Pink💙💖.... 💛Come On, 🤍Come On...Just Let Us Adore You!!!!💛🤍💙💖!!!

The songs were too cerebral and not catchy enough; that's why it didn't really catch on.
@@mylesgarcia4625 too cerebral? That describes all of Sondheim's musicals.

One of the most underratte shows over the last ten years!!! how we love these two especially together.
how this show wasn't more successful is almost criminal. Just watching this is a masterclass

Among the greatest performances in musical theatre history!
