That wedge will never slip past half the slide, unless the compensator falls off....

Its been way too long since I had a VB. I wish I could get them in the states.

Check out an evolution Industries bump stop. Retain the factory tensioner but stop it from rathecting wherever you set it for slack

Can only imagine the load it applies on the crank and trans shaft as it overtightens...Thanks

Exactly right. The Trans shaft bearings get worn and can cause damage to the teeth as has happened to me.

The grooves, at what depth do we replace the tensioner?

I want to replace 06' upgrade back to standard or better! I though I was helping bike but it ratcheted so tight the starting clunk was unnerving! Never want to hear that sound again!

There must be a way to reduce the tension on that sprung rod so that it allows the adjuster to move both ways. Maybe also if you removed some or all the teeth on the wedge it would allow it to move back and forth freely...hmmm!

@J T J the Hayden compensator uses springs to accomplish this.

Wrong Hayden M6 is a tensioner not a compensator

Here we are now in 2018, harley davidson now has a 4 valve per cylinder engine designed new from the ground up with larger cooling fins, larger oil cooler, more oil capacity to circulate the oil around the heads, larger stator for more power etc etc etc.
Why does harley davidson still use a CHAIN PRIMARY DRIVE? There is no reason for it and a gear primary would serve them much better, also they could keep the traditional primary cover the same if they wanted to preserve traditional appearance. Just about every motorcycle manufacturer has ditched the chain primary due to maintenance issues with it, yet harley davidson is unmoved which will change very very soon with the competition changing the game every day. The changes HD has made in the last 5 years has been long overdue and being a harley rider with the new engine i love it but they need to stop stalling and much much more.

Two words…. Loose tolerances. For instance I found out that one of the reasons they went to a balancer in the engine to smooth out the shaking, was simply so that they didn’t have to balance the crankshaft? Go figure. I figure that anything they want to do that allows them to get around tight tolerances ( let’s say, a quality product here), they’ll do… just too much money to be made with sloppy workmanship I guess. After all just think of all of the aftermarket parts and business that would be out of business if they just put out a quality product in the first place. Welcome to Harley Davidson.

Those auto tensioners should never be any more then half way on the slide, any more then this indicates a worn primary chain / sprocket.
