I think the reason why some people don't like Matsukaze Tenma/Arion Sherwind is because he's just too basic as a character and overall just a repeat of Endou Mamoru/Mark Evans. The way the story decided to make him captain by having Shindou Takuto/Riccardo Di Rigo break his leg (or some shit like that) was a bit or lazy writing. Tenma's dub voice in both the games and anime also doesn't do him any favors either. :/ Moving on to Nishizono Shinsuke/John-Pierre "JP" Lapin, he's pretty much a worse version of Tenma. His personality is generic, he complains a lot, his voice actor's not very great, and he somehow gets worse over time in terms of both character and effectiveness. As for Asuto Inamori/Sonny Wright, I'm kinda mixed on him as a character. On one hand, he lost his mother, which is quite saddening for someone so young. He also manages to pull a lot of his weight in the matches of Ares and Orion. On the other hand, I think people also found him annoying with how the story also tried making him something like Tenma and also overpowered to the point of being a Gary Sue in Orion. I think people were also frustrated with how he defended that one blue-haired guy, Ichihoshi Mitsuru/Philip Star, who blatantly sabatoged Inazuma Japan's chances of winning. It also doesn't help how he gets much character growth.
