Possibly best composition of Philipp ever ... Certainly the most experimental from formal structure standpoint. However also late romantic language cannot hide numerous features that look ahead towards newborn xx century knocking at the door of music ....
I find his op 118 piano quintet the best and most exciting, I'd even take it with me to a remote island as a last memory of human art. But this I also find good and enjoyable. Thanks, Bartje!
Excuse me for being critical, but this is not close to being a masterpiece.. it’s very childish and doesn’t contain great musical material. I still appreciate very much showcasing this sonata!
Maybe a sonata like Barber op. 6 is a still not well known treasure for cellists, that is really masterful. In comparison he was really a kid, but it’s already not comparable to this sonata here ...
@@bartjebartmans my comment says nothing about him, that’s right! But it’s the really incoherent themes, that follow each other and speak nothing. Nevertheless I’m happy you love it and wish you all the best
It has been published, dedicated to van Lier who was a famous cellist of the day, recorded and thanks to TH-cam available to a wide audience who judging the comments actually like it. Furthermore I like it. That settles it.

After listening to this piece, I need to look up more Scharwenka pieces. Not just Philip, but Xaver as well.
Again a wonderful work of Philip Scharwenka, congratulations for your work and dedication Mr. Bartmans !
Why haven’t I heard from this composer before?!

Estilo romántico en los comienzos del siglo XX

Excuse me but the only childish thing I see here is your comment. Your comment says everything about you who you are but nothing about Scharwenka.

@@serafin1719 It is only childish if you define giving and taking pleasure as childish ... there do exist monsters out there who believe as such ...
