  • Mischa Maisky Plays Strauss (2003). A recording of a live concert at the Richard-Strauss-Tage Garmisch-Partenkichen.
Richard Strauss - Sonata for cello & piano in F major, Op 6
    0:15 I. Allegro con brio
8:42 II. Andante ma non troppo
    16:05 III. Finale: Allegro Vivo
    Mischa Maisky: cello
    Pavel Gililov: piano
Maisky began studies at the Leningrad Conservatory and later with Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory whilst pursuing a concert career throughout the Soviet Union. In 1966 he won 6th Prize at the Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition. While his debut, at 17, with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra earned him the nickname "Rostropovich of the future", it was in 1966, as prize-winner of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, that he really started getting noticed. He entered the famous Moscow Conservatory to study with Rostropovich and was quickly taken under the great musician's wing. He emigrated to Israel in 1971, where he holds citizenship. He also studied for a time with Gregor Piatigorsky in Los Angeles. He currently lives in Belgium. In his performing and recording career, Maisky has worked in long-standing partnerships with artists such as the pianists Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, and Sergio Tiempo, the violinists Gidon Kremer and Janine Jansen, and the conductors Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, and Giuseppe Sinopoli. Maisky's friendship with Argerich has led to many performances together, such as the world premiere of Shchedrin’s double concerto Romantic Offering in 2011 in Lucerne, Switzerland. As a Deutsche Grammophon artist during the last 25 years, he has made over 50 recordings, including many with such orchestras as the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Mischa Maisky has the distinction of being the only cellist in the world to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky.

Pavel Gililov was born in 1950 in Donetsk in Southeastern Ukraine. He made his first appearance with an orchestra at age eight and by his 11th year performed the third piano concerto of famed composer Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky with such aplomb that the grand master invited him to study in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) at an academy for highly gifted children. The school has produced such talent as Boris Pergamenschikow, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Grigory Sokolov and many others. During his studies, Pavel Gililov received high honors at the All-Russian Piano Competition in Moscow (1972) and the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw (1975). [...] Pavel Gililov soon came to detest Soviet oppression and in 1978 applied to emigrate. He first moved to Austria and then to Cologne, Germany. [...] Pavel Gililov’s recording career includes albums and CDs for Deutsche Grammophon, RCA Victor, Toshiba EMI, Virgin and Orfeo to name a few. His discography provides a mere sampling of the wide-ranging talents of this versatile and vastly accomplished musician.

Difficult sonata. I haven’t any desire to ever work on it.

Not my favourite recording of this piece. The tempo in the first movement is way over the top, forcing the pianist to skip notes left right and centre. We can't even properly hear the dotted rhythm in the opening theme , because they are rushing like hell.
It seems this performance is all about cheap sensationalism and appearances.

i agree with most of that (not your last sentence but no matter). this is the first recording i heard of this sonata and was afraid that was the tempo... also robs it of orchestral effects in the piano. what recording would you recommend

@@ncarterette I'm inclined to agree about the performance, even though I think Maisky has a wonderful tone and phrasing... Best recordings - obviously Rostropovich with Devetzi and Piatigorsky/Pentarrio. The recording with Raphaela Gromes is the first I knew - worth a listen, but nothing revelatory. I've always thought Argerich would be perfect for the piano part , but there is no Maisky/Argerich recording sadly. (If you've never heard her recording of the Chopin Cello Sonata with Rostropovich, listen to it!)

@@florestan8333 Pascal Amoyel and Emmanuelle Bertrand were my intro to the Sonata and they’re very persuasive as well .

The pianist is not being sensitive enough to the cellist and is overplaying in places. There are places where you can’t even hear the cello part which is a shame because his playing is just marvelous.

never heard such an awful performance - it sounds like a soundtrack for a bad cartoon. Strauss himself may be really happy not to hear this persiflage. A great example of bad taste.

Maybe, we should forgive ignoramuses, for, if you look at his play list you will see Abba and other pop simple music for simple tastes. Why did I bother to look? Probably;y just curious.

@@DavidSmith-kc4hz Dude, stop being mean to people for having an opinion. I'm playing this piece right now and I don't like this performance. This doesn't mean that I don't like cellist, I'm actually a fan of him. And then, Pop music does not mean that you have a bad or as you said a simple taste. And that person also watched this video so I'm sure he/she isn't only a fan of pop music 🤦‍♀️
