    This lathe didn't start off being my first choice, but once I read through the manual of just about every other GS lathe they sell...I ended up ordering one today. This is in no small way due to the videos you made Ray--so thanks(!!!) for the efforts in making and uploading them. Not sure if you're still using that unit, but I'm sure there have also been changes made to the thing since you bought yours too.

      To date I use this lathe almost daily without one issue! I do a lot very accurate work with excellent results!

      @@RaysGarage Great news Ray, thanks for the reply! The G0824 lathe is a newer 14x40" machine with a 2.01" spindle barrel, but requires a lot more gear changes than the G0709 does. Also the G0709 will allow you to (more easily) cut diametral pitches, meaning you can more easily cut worm shafts/screws. Since I plan to use this mainly to build model engines (and am not a gunsmith), I figured I would make much more use of its threading capabilities than the 2" spindle bore, so I went this route. I'll have to install my own DRO, and ordered the same one Grizzly uses on the G0824--but that's a one-time thing and once it's done...it's done.
      You have some pretty cool videos on the channel, and I am definitely following along. Sorry to hear about your injury, but am very glad you're OK. Thanks again for the reply!

    Thanks Ray, that worked just fine, I could pause the video and see what I needed to. Looks like the only thing that might be an inconvenience is 12TPI otherwise all the threads I work with will be in the same gear set range.Likewise on the slower feeds.

    Pipe threads are rarely cut by single point because of the necessity for a taper attachment, and the amount of time and effort required being much more then a tap and die. We still need to single point straight threads when we cant afford any error of axial alignment. In any case, pipe threads have a standard lead to them equivalent to straight threads. The MP and DP actually stand for Modular Pitch and Diametral Pitch for making the worm in a worm gear assembly.

    thanks ray... i have a problem with my g0709 leaking cooling/cutting flood all over the floor out of the tailstock stand... i'm not smart enough to find where its leaking but its a substantial amount... i was going to by-pass the drain system and attach a 1 inch id clear vinyl hose but the little knob under the drain wouldnt hold the clamp... so i decided to thread in an adapter and attach to that... i measured the id of the adapter which is welded to the bottom of the tray under the drain.. then i found that a 12 tpi would work... not sure why... so after finding a calculator on line for determining minor and major diameter i single pointed a piece of delrin at 12 tpi... then drilled it out... i had to chase the threads 3 times but i got it to thread in... kind of cool but it didnt work because the tube kinked that i wanted to go into the stand on the tail stock end and down in the bucket... tomorrow i will see if i can find a 45 degree adapter at 1 inch id to fit over my 1 inch od part and glue them together... i may have to abandon my hose idea and hard pipe it in so i dont have any more leaks... i wont be able to move the tray but i don't anyway as i prefer to shop vac it out,,, i get it cleaner that way.... does yours leak?? if so how did you fix it???

      To be honest, I don't like flooding my machines so I use the Cool Mist Fog system on big jobs and just a acid brush w/cutting fluid for small jobs. I don't like flood systems because the fluid gets stagnet and stinks after a while plus tend to be very messy. Also, I like being able to remove the chip tray, I do vac it but, I also like to wipe it out from time to time. That's my two cents worth.

    so when threading we can not give Auto cross feed ???

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, two separate functions, why would you want to crossfeed while threading???

      @@RaysGarage i think the thread has depth of cut. so why not ??
