Aewsome! I ran 300ft of perforated flex, burrito-wrapped with cobblestone, and topped with sand in my S.E. Texas backyard to create a way to get runoff from my neighbors out to the ditch in front of my house, creating the drop with risers on the sumps and drains along the way. The info put out here is fantastic!!

Thanks for putting out this invaluable information. I live in southeast Louisiana where it seems we get rain every day. I plan to install a French drain (with your help) by myself this spring. I'm a 56 yr old lady and I'm addicted to your channel!! Love the way you teach the concepts and reason on your installation techniques and methods!
Just finishing my foundation footer French drain around my house on the lake today. That Michigan clay is no joke! Took all damn summer, but thanks to you it was a DIY. Thanks brother
Very nice job, as always. A lot of common sense is used in all your applications. Your crew is phenomenal!! They all work in a synchronicity that is so efficient. Thanks for all your videos. Great content & information.
Im doing one now following your technique. 200 ft long all the way down my property. Without all that equipment, this is some MAN WORK for sure 😂. My back is screaming.
I recently put in two French drains following these methods and they are working great! Mine are open french drains covered in rock not sod but I followed the advise of The French Drain man. It was a lot of hard work as I did it by myself but this system makes the most sense. I scoured the internet for information for a couple months before deciding what to do and in my opinion there is no one that seems to know what they're doing more than The French drain man!

Is that typical in the installation? I’m having something similar occur where the majority of the bulk water drains but there are a few spots that still hold a little water. I’m assuming it’ll air dry eventually but am uncertain. I’m also in the South so mosquitos are a concern. Any insight from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.

Awesome video. Thanks for this. I have a sump pump drain line in back yard. It was draining somewhere i cant drain anymore. Its only gonna be going out 15 to 20 feet. My neighber ran a 5" pvc pipe with a french drain. What you auggest I do since its not a long run im doing?
Robert, I’m looking to have a French drain and buried downspout system combined into one trench. I have no storm drain to tie into and was going to use a pop-up emitter. Should I have one for each system? Thank you for all the videos.
I have a bunker that gets flooded. I'm going to do a french drain around the back and one side towards gravity. I don't have a storm water nearby though... where will I run the water off to and how? Perhaps run it to the nearby garden down hill and make a water fall?
That would be a question for your county building department. It all depends on what you are trying to do as well. You have to keep the water in that leach field contained, and that is what the code states. You should also have clay around the leach field; the clay acts as a rubber liner, and when the septic system was approved by the inspector, I am sure it was done properly.
Hey I followed your diy I put two four inch pipes right on the bottom of the fabric with a solid pipe downspout, the problem I’m having is at the discharge point I have all three pipes at the bottom where it leaches out, but I’m not getting really anything in the pipes it’s running between the pipes on the bottom of the trench and coming out at the bottom it only gets in to the pipe about a quarter of an inch, I’m lost as how to collect the water that’s coming from the bottom of the trench and not in the pipe and bring it to a pop up….any advice would be greatly appreciated
It works like a leach field, so you’re not going to see that much water come out. Sometimes, you don’t see any water come out at all. Once all the subsoil has become completely saturated and you’ve had a rainy season, you’ll see more water come out the discharge end. I would put a pop-up on a knife-cut line, and then just run one of the 8 slots on a knife-cut line to a pop-up emitter. I’d run it out until I had enough fall, and I’d make sure I had a sock on that knife-cut pipe.
I saw another video from this apple drain guy. I did what he said, and put the dirt back. It failed within 3 months, what a waste of energy, hard work, money...thanks for this video, I will have to start all over again, I'm in Clearwater Fl, lots of rain here.

First thanks for the informative videos. Very professional. Second, I'm putting in a french drain in the back corner of my yard. Here in Alabama we have red clay then sandstone. What size gravel/stone do you recommend using? How much topsoil do you recommend putting on the gravel so grass with grow? I'll be ordering some of that fabric. Again thanks for the information.
The rock you are using is different than the round rock you recommend in other videos. I used pond rock that averages 2'3" but some are bigger. Will that work? Also, do you secure the fabric or just fold it over and cover with rock? Thanks

Great video and great information, thank you. Are those Start Mats that you're using? My property makes this site look like a dessert!! : ) I appreciate all of the information you share, and the links to the supplies are extremely helpful as well.
How close can I put a French drain to a leach field of a septic system? My leach field is in the lowest part of my yard in the front yard and that's where my drainage has to go to the baritch for my French drain.
There's too many variables. Every situation's different. I advise you never to go through your septic field system because you're gonna fill it up with water, and it's gonna be to full capacity, and then your septic system is going to back up.
I know where my leach field lines are. I just want to know do I need to stay 10 ft away from my leach field or do I need to be more? I've got about 15 ft to play with from my leach field to my property line from next door.
I live in the country and have a 2 acre backyard that is clay soil and is wet. I have no drainage ditch or storm drain to connect to. How do I discharge the water? I'm surrounded by farm field on 3 sides of my property .
So I have a similar issue across my backyard, but we don't have any sort of storm drain to terminate a french drain into. What would your recommendation be for that situation? Dig a well 4-6 feet in diameter and maybe 6 feet deep and fill it with stone?
I count 3 downspouts on that home. And let’s assume the other home has 3 also .Thats a tremendous amount of water. Why wouldn’t you just tie them in and eliminate all the surface water? Planning on attempting this myself this Summer.
Looks like a new subdivision why aren’t the contractors who build the homes doing this kind of drainage…… yes I know it cost more, but you would think they would be required to do this by a code….
Because it's more work and cheaper if you don't do it this way. Plus the other guys can do less work charge the same price and then they can come back and service your French drain. There's even companies who offer service plans but if you have this guy put in your drain. it will never be serviced
Interesting. The piping for the downspouts is perforated with no fabric to prevent soil and roots from penetrating the system. Also, running 5 runs of perforated pipe in the french drain only saves on the amount of stone required. Saves you money. Not only that but with 5 pipes there is a large air void which could collapse if anything heavy was put overhead. The pipes are what, 4 inches each. That's a lot of air? Yes with 5 pipes there is the potential to move more water but the 2 initial 4 inch pipes would be sufficient. This job does not run enough water to justify the 5 pipes. Sorry.
You keep bragging that you use inch and a quarter to inch and a half cobblestone to go over those pipes. And according to the picture you're not using cobblestone

Sorry.

Their pump failed during a power outage, and all those pipes underground acted as a detention tank.
You keep bragging that you use inch and a quarter to inch and a half cobblestone to go over those pipes. And according to the picture you're not using cobblestone
