    the Ballade in G Minor, for me, is the epitome of all Chopin's musical language...it is so profoundly poignant, melancholy and yet strikes right at one's heart. I cannot physically move while listening, it literally takes my breath away...I've seen and heard alot in my life, but this Ballade....well, if you love it as well, I needn't say more...just that Chopin was always the 'soundtrack' of my life.

      I've always been astonished at the amount of repertoire Ashkenazy had. He once said, "Don't become a concert pianist if you are not a fast learner."

    These Ballades and Scherzos are masterpieces that translate the sublime way the human feelings with sensitivity and subtlety. The beauty and harmony of the music is amazing. How wonderful the sound of the piano is when its potential is explore in depth. Chopin besides being a great pianist, was a genius as composer of piano divine music. The interpretation is fabulous. This recording gives us the pleasure of listening to the music of the greatest composer of piano that ever existed, played by an outstanding pianist.. Bravissimo!!

    So different from Horowitz or Rubinstein! Ashkenazy’s version is very gentle and bittersweet, full of melancholy and sentimentality. Absolutely love this recording!

    I met Vladimir Ashkenazy many decades ago, when he was performing at Symphony Hall in Boston with the BSO. I was in the green room with a teenage friend, another avid fan and musician, who wanted a photo of him. Her camera reel stuck, and he held up everyone in the room for about 15 minutes trying to help her fix it, making small talk with us. It was very sweet and gentlemanly, and I'll always remember him for that, in addition to his lovely playing. I got a photo of him too, but I think I lost it in a move many years ago. Funny, I can think about that event, and it seems like just yesterday. I see photos of Ashkenazy with gray hair, and I can hardly believe it. Sigh...

      He is such a lovely man. When he came in to conduct Brahms' tragic overture with us, he ended up talking for most of the time about his past with Shostakovich and it was the best thing ever!! :)

    The 1960's, 70's and early 80's saw the best years of Ashkenazy as a pianist. His total dedication and rare degree of artistry subsequently followed into his conducting, especially in Russian repertoire.
    I also feel his earlier mid 60's account of the Ballades is the better version.

      Don't rank them. Just enjoy them. The first time I heard Chopin's wonderful Ballade in G min Andre Watts played. Never heard those runs at the end so thunderous. Heard Horowitz play the G min Ballade too. He came off the bench seemed like a foot and landed on the low octave "D" that sets up that wild coda....And his playing of that coda....superhuman! Just enjoy the different pianists...cause we're just mere mortals...

    この演奏も最高ではあるが、あまりにもアルトゥール=ベネディッテイ=ミケンランジェリ(ARTURO BENEDETTI MICHELANGELI)のマズルカ(Mazurkas)を聞きすぎた為に、この演奏すら違和感を覚えてしまう。また、バラッド(Ballade)も同様である。何かを集中して考えようとするときは、必要な音楽である。

      TheMetalAge19 Agree; personally, I prefer cleaner interpretations, such as Zimmermann and Brailowsky. Too many rubatos here. Yet Ashkenazy is awesome.

    • @senar1940
      @senar1940 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Joao Guimaraes Ferreira I think I understand what you mean...after all, Chopin was halfway Classicism and Romanticism, great admirer of Bach and Mozart as you probably know. Yet don't underestimate Ashkenazy's musical story...he audibly leans on modest, discrete motives and slender figurations....he will never 'overdo' it....he plays his role magnificently, in my opinion; I worshipped him since my childhood, and I always will! Let's not try to take a too severe attitude towards excellent pianists like Ashkenazy, he deserves a gigantic amount of respect!! Last thought: we might wonder if Chopin himself would have prefered to place accents and build stormy passages, handling as much rubato as Ashkenazy- if he would have possessed the strength(!)

      @brendanhall3265 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheMetalAge19 I wouldn't say struggled... it's unique but it's also my favorite interpretation of the first ballade :) Some things seem odd at the moment, until it resolves itself at the next moment.

    • @MrMarleyz
      @MrMarleyz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +TheMetalAge19 He does not struggle, it's just a different interpretation from what your used to.
      Personally, I love Ashkenazy's way of playing Chopin.

    legendary 1964 recording is much better than this. especially scherzo no 1... this new recording is not great . he was far better at that time technically.

    • @EmptyVee00000

      In some ways the 1964 recording is better, and in other ways the newer one is better; some like speed.
