If a storm the likes of which hasn't hit for many years was predicted, I'd heed the warnings. I'd do what I could to protect my family, home, and pets, and then I'd pack my bag and go to the hospital, because I'm a nurse and I'd be expected to be there, no matter the weather. Complacency kills, and it's tragic.
@ArmednotTriggered, Thank you. I wish anyone who hasn't experienced at least one hurricane would refrain from telling those of us who have how to react. The situation is always a lot more nuanced than, "Well just don't be there, duh!" With a storm this widespread, evacuate to where? Out of the southeast U.S. entirely? I once evacuated my home for a cat3 storm, right into its path when it changed course. I was paying for an expensive hotel room while my cats were terrified and miserable in the back of my truck out in the parking lot. Meanwhile, my neighbors who stayed home didn't even lose power or communications. I've lived on central Florida coast for over 40 years, through several hurricanes and many tropical storms. Sometimes evacuation is the best idea, but usually not. "OMG, people are dying! Evacuate!" When all the numbers are sorted out, there will have been a 1-in-a-million chance of being killed by riding out this storm. If a storm passes leaving 99.9% of the buildings and infrastructure usable, where do you suppose the news crews will point their cameras? They'll be standing in knee deep water amid the 0.1% damaged, leaning into the wind, like that's the safest spot they could find to report from.
What catches people off guard is the strength of a storm bringing what you’d only expect from a tornado storm cell. But instead of a small amount of ppl it’s entire states. It’s like an earth quake from the sky, walls of rain will pick you up and move you. People don’t expect rain to bring such force. NOT TO MENTION the flooding. You never expect to have your home flooded.. we should hold consideration for the people affected
Funny you mentioning the blizzard of 78, I was 5. Michigander here. We have pictures of the snow halfway up the house. My parents had to drive a snowmobile to get the few things we needed and had to go miles because everything was closed. I gotta go look through the old polaroids now. ✌️
Most of Tampa was completely fine and had no need to evacuate especially since the storm was expected to make landfall in Tallahassee. The biggest surprise is why this news station is reporting from Tampa and not in Perry.
@Kinghllngshd641 Floriduh has been declared a no go zone with the biggest insurance companies. These storms keep getting stronger and it's not a large land mass to get across. Gain momentum from the warm waters just on the other side.
ANYONE (especially that mother) who didn't listen to the warnings are idiots and should be fined. Money, time, and frankly putting everyone at risk to rescue you because YOU thought you knew better??! Infuriating
The confusing part is why are they in Tampa and not in the Big Bend area. Tampa got alittle rain and wind but the overall impact in the Bay Area was minimal. There’s nothing unsurvivable about it.

You wouldn't -- not if you were honest.
People lost their homes and their lives because an unprecedented event happened for the time in 100 years. My house and family are safe. Many of our friends are not so fortunate. I dont think now is the time to get haughty about what you "would've done" else's shoes.
Just ignore them, they're idiots living states away with no clue.
@ArmednotTriggered, Thank you. I wish anyone who hasn't experienced at least one hurricane would refrain from telling those of us who have how to react. The situation is always a lot more nuanced than, "Well just don't be there, duh!"
With a storm this widespread, evacuate to where?
Climate change. Facts. Numbers. "Worse" means more water. It's not complicated.
I love your humanity ❤ Cheers for such an understanding comment
Useful reminder. Listen to experts.
how is anyone "caught off guard" by this"?
we have been warned about this for 50 years.
ignorance comes with peril, shocker!

"Over 3 million without power". Maybe it's time for the US stop putting powerlines on wooden popsicle sticks, especially in states that have hurricanes and tornadoes? Underground powerlines are the norm in many Western European countries. The US just never seems to want to improve infrastructure.
