- December's Children - The Lovin' Things (1968)
The song was written by Arthur "Artie" Schroeck and Jet Loring. Artie Schroeck
first released in January 1967. A version by Bobby Rydell was put out as a 45 on the Reprise label in January 1968. Then in April 1968 UK group The Marmalade released it and took it to the UK Top Ten. Later that year US group December´s children also released it with a somewhat different orchestral
arrangement than the Marmalade version. "Lovin' Things" finally became a hit in the US when a The Grass Roots covered it in early 1969.
One of the finest, melodic pop songs ever written. Pure sunshine from the late 60's which will never fade. Wonderful.
Reminds me of when I found my true love when we 1st met
Fast forward ⏩ we are happily married for 40 yrs and are still together til this day
The Grassroots version reigns supreme!!!
There is also an obscure version of this song by Bobby Rydell.
It was also recorded in 6 languages by Petula Clarke and an instrumental version by the Ventures. The Marmalade finally took it to #1 in the UK
#6. They had their only #1 with a cover of Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da.
Love it, thank you for posting:)
The Marmalade played on this single although their producer, Mike Smith added the Keith Mansfield brass and string arrangement to their backing track. The Marmalade were accomplished musicians and it's correct to say that they shared the same session musicians as the Love Affair because it was guys from the Marmalade who played on Everlasting Love!! It's confusing trying to work out who did the original of Lovin' Things as so many versions came out around the same time, but I think the first were another Glasgow band called the Pathfinders (check their version on TH-cam). It's often quoted that the Marmalade copied the Grass Roots version but it's the other way round, as the Grass Roots version was released at least nine months after the Marms record. Hope this helps!
The Grass Roots' version copies the arrangement of the Marmalade version almost note for note as well.
It seems that Instruments are played on the Marmalade's version by the Love Affair ( Everlasting Love , ........cession musicians )
okay I don't know which version I like most, this, The Marmalade or The Grass Roots??? LOL
Check out Petula Clark's version as well as the country cover by Terry Gregory. Wasn't aware of so many different versions!
It's ok, but Marmalade and Petula Clark did better versions. Nonetheless, it's a great song.
I like Marmalade better
