Beeldjes van Nehalennia zijn in Zeeland gevonden, waar ik woon, evenals viking bijlen. Ik heb in mijn keuken een beeld van hout van nehalennia.

Artefacts were also found more inland in Nijmegen and Köln near the river Rhine. But the most in Zeeland. Her attributes were loafs and apples, associated with fertility. A ship or stern may refer to trade. The dog? Safety? We do not know if she was Germanic. Gallo Roman seems more likely. A comparable stone was found more North in Beetgum, Friesland, devoted to Ghludana. In some cases the name of Nehalennia is also written with 'gh'. This might be associated with a Germanic root, still present in the pronunciations of the the Frisian, German 'g'. But temples were merely a Roman thing.

I've been drawn to this goddess since becoming Northern pagan, love to see her getting some attention! She definitely gives me Vanir Vibes
To me the dog is a watchdog, symbol of protection and vigilance, watching over her flock
I wonder if she has a connection to Ran, Hel, Idunn and Isis - it might seem strange to connect her to Isis but the imagery of the dog and the boat is very ancient. Idunn, because of the apples, Ran because she guides the dead, (same with Hel...) and she protects sailors and Hel because she's a guardian of the dead and Hel also has a dog.
@@craftyhobbit7623 Maybe the first two syllables of her name could have something to do with 'neh(w)-' (close to) and 'halj'- (netherworld)? A bit of a stretch though, as the loss of the w and j would need to be accounted for.
brilliant stuff loved it. i've been to the netherlands and is a really special place as a pagan. i have had spiritual experiences with nehalinna at eastbourne beach which i found as a sacred spot for me with the sea and music around me.
The Oera Linda Book explains Nyhellenia was Minerva
But it's a 19th-century forgery. Try to read it, it has the same flow as the romantic novels from those days. Written by someone who took an interest in philology and liked a good story.

Great to see you here in the Netherlands, and if you come here a another time, visit the Veluwe area. Here are alot of burial mounds dating back 2500-5000 years. WE have alot of history buried here such as Mesoliticum, Neolithicum, Bronze age, Iron age, Roman, Merovingian, Frankish, and Viking artifacts.

I love Nehalennia's temple in Colijnsplaat, Zeeland. Have you been there? If not, I recommend it! Been on a festival to Nehalennia some 3-4 years back in Colijnsplaat, traveling there from Germany, It's been absolutely wonderful and I met such amazing people!

I didn’t even know about the goddess until I saw your Netherlands gathering video and then seeing there are so many shrines of her in that museum in Leiden, which is the city I am from and still live, is so special! I’ve also been to that museum so many times but never knew about Nehalennia, so I really have to go back there soon! I also will try to connect with her more. I have just been starting to get back more and more into Norse paganism after being disconnected for quite some time. I didn’t even know there were more people here in the Netherlands that are Norse pagans too! That’s so lovely to see! NḪL [Akkadian naḫlu, naḫallu, naḫalu, neḫlu] - stream (noun), streaming (participle), to stream, to pass over - by Roman times in northern Europe this had been personified into the goddess Nehalennia as the goddess of streams and stream crossings.
The 3 goddesses are Maiden, Mother, and Crone.

Her name reminded me of this priestess in the Oera Linda Book. Still Im not sure if its a true account or not but some dots are starting to connect.

It was proberbly just a book to troll academia.

They proberbly gave the priestess a name similar to nehallenia to make it sound somehow familliar.

Nehalennia is a goddess of unclear origin, perhaps Germanic or Celtic. Then Gallo-Roman ? She is attested on and depicted upon numerous votive altars discovered around what is now the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands, where the Schelde River flowed into the North Sea. Worship of Nehalennia dates back at least to the 2nd century BC and veneration of the goddess continued to flourish in northwestern Europe in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

Ok I stopped watching after the first part of the video. So many misconceptions here!
Nehalenia is NOT a Mother Goddess. The votive stone for the Matrones is just there as an example of similar style votive stones, bus Nehalenia is not on there. There are votive stones for other Goddesses as well in the same exhibition.
The two temples that are reconstructed, are build as tourist attractions. These are not real consecrated temples, though pagans do their own thing there sometimes. And Nehalenia is in no way an official Goddess of the Netherlands. Who have you been talking to?!
Nehalenia was not venerated by the Romans, but by Celtic en Germanic people who changed their name in something Latin like. and adopted the Roman custom to build stone temples and order stone votives, probably made by Roman artisans.
Nehalenia was just one of many many Goddesses venerated in the Low Lands. Other votive stones have been found all around the Netherlands and Belgium. It is just because the temples for Nehalenia were flooded there were so many of Her votives preserved.
Other votive stones have been reused in buildings over the ages. The stones being very expensive in a country without rocks or mountains.
I'm a Dutch priestess of the Goddess and have studied en venerated Nehalenia for many years.
The majority of my information came from the museum, and an article written by a Dutch scholar. I would be interested in knowing where your information comes from genuinely. As it is hard to find information that is translated into English and is accessible
First of all: I was wrong about the Matrones stone. This one does say Nehalenia. I didn’t realise it was in this exhibition. Sorry about that!
But … most probably this stone was a mistake. The artwork was done in Cologne and the stones were then shipped off to their destinations. The dedications were carved at the temple sites. This stone was most likely a wrong delivery, but was used anyway.
The funny thing with this museum is that they are far more interested in ancient Mediterranean cultures. So they over emphasise the Roman part.
Other very interesting archaeological finds from the Low lands are tucked away in a very small area in the attic. :(

i like your enthousiasme,and the research you do before making a video.its not always 100% correct,but hey,who knows,its a long time ago and there is little written in that time, and when.. it was written by the romans,not really a reliable source :) Nehelenia was worshipped all around europe, especially of course the countries connected to the sea.
