It's so amazing how this movie, after all this years (first watched it in 1998), still manages to teach me something. This exact scene, this whole 'look at things in a different way' finally helped me get over my break up.
Best movie of all time.

Please consider this lesson in context of the final scene and how it relates to Mr. Keating's dismissal as well as Neil's suicide. 'Look at things in a different way. Don't just think of what the author thinks but what you think.'
