Awesome! I am a daughter of a concrete masonry and my Dad has since passed. I sure miss him and learned a lot from him with repairs etc and car repairs. So I typically tackle any home job and you have helped tremendously. You are a Godsend. VERY INFORMATIVE and easily understood. You made me feel comfortable that "I can do this". Thank you!
Great video, This is also a part of my work as a restoration technician I have been doing this for over 10 years, just to to be safe if using any type of concrete sealer product it is suggested that the substrate receive an initial light "mist" coat to break the surface tension. This should then be followed immediately by a uniform flood coat which allows just enough material to carry a 4 inch rundown from the contact point. Application should be made in an over-lapping pattern. It’s also important to note that the surface should be clean, free of stains, vegetative growth, and efflorescence, thoroughly sound and in good repair. Any deficiencies should be corrected prior to the application of any type of concrete sealers. And if you are applying any sealer on the new concrete, or concrete repair allow 28 days for the concrete to fully cure and then apply the product for a better result.
I can do this ! Before watching these 3 vids I was completely clueless about what to do with my filthy driveway . Just waiting a couple of weeks for the Texas heat to let up then I’m all in . Thank you for doing such a great job on this series . Subbed .
Highly researched subject and great videos! I watched all 4 in the series 🙂One question - can I apply a Cement Primer after applying Liquid Sodium Silicate, on concrete boundary walls and then paint them white? The concrete is new now, but I am afraid after a few years it may catch black mold even after painting it.
Thank you for your very informative video. We had a concrete patio done about 4 months ago and now we are noticing the staining of the leaves on the concrete. We had to use bleach combined with water to get the stains out because nothing else would work. But since the leaves keep falling, the concrete continues to get stained by the leaves. Is it wise to bleach it again now and try to seal it? I am Afraid that leaves will fall again while it’s drying and stain it again. Or should I wait until the spring or next summer? Please help we are new at this!!!
Can you recommend a siliconate concrete sealer from Home Depot or Lowes? Many products keep referring to Acrylic? Many sealers make vague reference to Silica as a special secret or use some weird made-up word that alludes to Siliconate, but does not say it.
Im looking for a concrete sealer with color non slip non gloss. I have seen so much Im confused. I have an old external slab that has several stains that I plan to sand down. What product is best for that application?
I know this video is several years old but I have question about penetrating concrete sealers here in 2024. I have a concrete retaining wall 9 feet high. The outside of the wall is finish in stucco. The inside of the wall holds back dirt / soil. The soil on the inside of the wall is watered regularly because grass and garden plants are planted next to the inside of the wall. Over time, the water penetrates through the inside of the retaining wall, moves through the wall to exterior surface where the stucco has been sprayed & painted. Eventually the movement of the water damages the stucco with "bubbles of air and water. Question: If I seal the OUTSIDE of the wall with penetrating sealers, will that prevent water from coming through the wall and damaging the stucco? Thanks!
Would you recommend the Siliconate sealer for existing stamped- stained Concrete? Assume stripping of existing 1 year old Acrylic sealer would be needed also?
I'm looking into cleaning and sealing the concrete surface around my swimming pool. Since liquids do not soak into the concrete, can the surface become slippery if oil and such are spilled on it ? I don't want anyone to slip and fall around my swimming pool area ?
Thanks for this Education. For 2 Months I've been trying to decide what to buy for My basement floor, all I see a lot of is epoxy flooring. I know I don't want that because I can tell it just sits on the concrete. I wanted something that would penetrate the concrete. But I also know that You can't use any product anywhere. And this seems like something that would suit My need. Although Rather Pricey. But Looks promising, So I wanna know, can this product be used indoors? Or Are there any other Siliconate Penetrating Sealers that you can recommend for interior use? Thanks alot.
Hi I hardened my concrete with “scotchguard stone floor protector plus” before framing our new home, now that we have moved in I’m noticing water/oil absorption bad, wondering what I should use to seal it and what would be compatible with the product I have already applied? Thank you!
Fantastic scientific based video! What would you recommend for interior kitchen concrete floor sealer? We just finished grinding and sanding our concrete sub floor and are trying to figure out the best sealer that minimally changes the look. We purchased BEHR PREMIUM 1 Gal. Natural Protector and Waterproofer and are thinking that maybe it might not be the best. It says Silicone based.
We used Drylock about 20 years ago and for the past 10 years some of it hasn't held up in certain areas, mainly the lower half of the wall. Can you suggest what product we should use to seal the concrete from the seepage we now need to address before it gets worse, when there is a lot of rain or a quick thaw of snow? Also we realize we need to clean and prep the wall, but we won't be able to get all the Drylock off. Are we stuck using Drylock again? If so can we go over the old Drylock with the new Drylock?
There's a video somewhere on TH-cam on this .. If I remember it was 100% for 12 years, 72% at 15 years.. And 20% at 17 years.. This is assuming you made sure it penetrated 3mm when you applied it
My driveway has some minor pitting probably due to some freeze/thaw cycles during the prior homeowners time at the house. Should this be repaired prior to sealing? You videos are top notch.
@SANDRA MUNOZ - For some reason TH-cam won't let me reply to your comment so I'm posting my reply as a separate comment: It should be possible to paint over this sealer. These types of siliconate sealers are commonly used as primers for other sealers. Just to be sure, you may want to contact Vseal and they can tell you if masonry/concrete paint is compatible. Another option you have instead of painting it is to apply an acrylic sealer on top of the Vseal. An acrylic sealer is pretty much just paint so you'll get the same appearance.
Rustem - The mortar used to apply tiles will stick to the concrete that has been sealed. However, I would recommend trying to find out where the moisture is coming from first and addressing the source of the problem. If the water is coming from underneath the concrete, you could have reverse hydrostatic pressure which is pushing water up into the concrete. Trying to stop this with a sealer could be a challenge. My recommendation would be to find out if you can stop the source of the water through drainage - either underneath the concrete or around the perimeter of the concrete. If that's not an economical solution, you'll probably want to use a sealer designed specifically for this application. These are called negative side application sealers. You might check out products from Aquafin like 1K or Mortar-LN.
I'm not aware of any penetrating sealers that are meant to "shine" or that look good when they claim to have a sheen. Topical/film forming sealers are the better bet for that look. Vseal has a product called Industra-Gloss WB (SB if you want solvent based).
Great videos. We recently bought a house with pet urine all in garage floor. Had paint removed by sanding down to the cement, cleaned, then Used enzymatic cleaner (anti-icky poo) and poured all over cement floor to treat smells. Now the cement has a strong chemical/urine smell. Needing to seal the floor now but wondering if sealing with siliconate sealer will trap all remaining smells inside or would you suggest a different sealer?? I really don’t care what the cement floor looks like, just want it to smell nice. Thanks.
Thanks for the easy to understand videos on sealing concrete. We live in the High country in the South Island of New Zealand with cold winters (-5 to -20 degrees centigrade). We have a patio outside made up of 8 concrete slabs (2.8m by 1.5m) each surrounded by 200mm by 200mm macrocarpa timber. A small gap has appeared as the concrete dried between the slab and the macrocarpa that I am concerned will allow water to lie in and turn to ice, thus causing some degradation in the slabs. Do you have any suggestions as to how I seal this gap. I plan to use a siliconate sealer but do not want this to discolour compared to the slabs. Also do you know whether I can use the sealer on the macrocarpa? Thanks in anticipation
You're definitely thinking about this right way. That gap between the slab and timbers could cause problems if it isn't filled or sealed. If the gap is larger than 1.5mm, I would put a closed cell backer rod in the gap then seal it with an elastomeric polyurethane sealant. I don't know what's available in NZ but here in the states we use something like Masterseal NP-1. After you close up the gap with the sealant, then apply the concrete sealer to the slab. The concrete sealer would not be suitable for sealing those timbers. If you want to keep the natural look of the timbers, I would recommend some sort of UV resistant timber oil. This requires yearly application. You could go for a film forming finish on the timbers like a marine varnish, but I'll be honest I don't know anything about macrocarpa so I can't provide any recommendations on whether this would be suitable or not. You might try calling a macrocarpa supplier and ask them what they recommend. Good luck!
Paint itself will act as a sealer although not a great one. Depending on the paint type used, you may be able to just use that. However, a penetrating sealer can go on first and then you can paint. If you're staining, you'll want to stain and then seal. "Stains" come in all types though so I would check with the manufacturer. Heavily pigmented stains may act more like a paint and block some of the sealer.
What penetrating sealer is recommended to resist engine oil staining? I have a recently cured 4000psi garage concrete floor. I found PS100 by Concrete Sealers USA, but would like your opinion.
I have a newly poured concrete slab and I’m Seeing bootstains as the concrete dries. some areas are white some are dark and it seems to be stained how to remove it is a broom finish thanks
What kind of finish is this on the concrete really like the look ? .. great video 👍🏼 Your advice would really help PS I am in the northeast sometimes is ice and snow and I like to have a somewhat of a lasting finish if I could
last year I applied L&M Auqapel to my concrete driveway. It worked fine for the first 4-5 mos. Water beaded nicely. Came back from winter stay in Florida and water now just soaks in after rain. Not happy with the result seems I should get more than 1 year. Do you think Vseal 101 will work better. No salt on driveway with winter storm. Sealed 3 yrs before with Everclear product.
I have an acid stained, sealed, concrete floor that was installed 2 years ago in a restaurant. In the last 6 months, the sealer has become sticky and you can feel it when you walk on the floor. Do I need to seal it again and if so, do I need to strip off the old sealer? Can I just buff it or wax it to get rid of the stickiness? I think that the old sealer was water based.
These types of sealers aren't for moisture problem coming up from under the concrete. You'll need something completely different. If possible, try to find the source of the moisture and address it at the source first. Otherwise sealing it may cause moisture to just build up under the sealer. It will likely fail eventually. If you find the source and fix it, I would still seal it. You'll want a sealer that is designed to with stand what's called hydrostatic pressure. I don't have a lot of experience with these. An example is Ghost Shield Siloxa-Tek 8500. I can't vouch for it though.
What’s the best sealer for a poured concrete patio that’s best to protect against rust stains from patio furniture, tree stains and animal stains and mud from foot traffic?
In the video - you show the original concrete slab. Can I use this approach on a concrete slab that I have stained (one of your videos shows the staining process). Or is this only for non stained concrete. Overall the best series and videos on Concrete staining and sealing. Thank you !!
This works very well with stained concrete. Just be sure to test a small area first to make sure the stain and sealer don't have an interaction that changes the appearance or color.
I cleaned my slab and sidewalks with chlorine bleach and s power washer, then added a first rolled on gray stain, but had to stop after first coat because it's raining I love in fl! After the concrete dries for about 15 hrs xan I apply the 2nd coat and the wait 24-48 HRS to apply water solvent sealer?? I want to at least roll on 2 coats of concrete stain with added sand for skid proofing or slip resistances but won't adding sealer make it slippery? I was told the staining has primer and skid proofing in it. Is that true or did I skip a step or can I apply sealant afterwards now? And would the water sealent be best on driveway and sidewalks?
I have a front porch that has a big overhang so very little sun gets on the concrete and it faces north. the front gets quite black with no sun but if I power wash it does come a lot better but the concrete is quite old there are no cracks or flaking but it doesnt look good I think the penetrating method would be best?? I live in Canada where we get very cold winters and lots of snow , I am a retired widowlady and think I could handle applying sealer do you think this is the way I should go?
Thanks for this video. I want to seal my tension slabbed concrete in my MB & Bath after I remove the carpet & sheet vinyl. My cat has been spraying on the carpet & I presume the spray has gotten to the concrete because of the cleaners I used. I do not have the money to get a professional metallic epoxy & want to seal the concrete and have it look semi-decent until I can afford epoxy in two or three years. BIN's Primer and sealer has been recommended for the cat smell. Please advise what you would recommend I do to seal in and out cat spray. I like the look of white high-gloss metallic epoxy, which is what I want eventually. What is the minimum I can do on a budget and accomplish by myself with no DIY skills? Thank you!
Hi Chris, thanks for the great video series. I want to make sure I'm using the proper materials. We have a stained, stamped concrete deck around the pool that needs to be resealed. It's been completely cleaned. We would like it if whatever material we use to seal it also darkens it. We live just outside of NYC in terms of weather. Which method should we use to seal our pool deck. We don't care if it has a slight sheen when finished, Thanks in advance for your advice. Jon
I would probably go with a non-yellowing acrylic sealer for this application. It will need to be reapplied after a few years, but it will hold up to pool chemicals a little better than a penetrating sealer. It will also darken the concrete or as the sealer manufacturer's would say "enhance the appearance."
good day sir. can i ask a piece of advice what type of sealer i will use for interior wall, my wall painting constantly flucking off due to moist because of a very high humidity in this country, what should i do'? thank u hope u can springkle me some of your thoughts
This video covers most of my questions except my is really old concrete in my basement which im sure never had a sealer and im sure out dust prolem n our house comes from this How can i perpare this for a sealer now.Removing all the dust is almost impossible.
I enjoyed this 3 part series. Thank you for sharing! I have a question. I have just removed laminate flooring from concrete, the concrete is the foundation of my townhouse and the interior flooring of the first level. I have an open concept in the area with the concrete, Is it appropriate to use a water base siliconate on the concrete slab my house is built upon? I currently do not want to put any flooring over the concrete floors. I want the interior concrete exposed in this area. I only want to cover the floors with area rugs. Temperatures can get below 31 degrees where I live. Please let me know your thoughts, if applying the siliconate sealer would be the appropriate action to take. Thx!
Does the sealer help with concrete dust. I washed my concrete plenty of time and still have concrete dust. If I go outside in the concrete and walk inside the house you can see white foot print from the dust!
I'm looking for a good alternative for sealing my kitchen countertop. Does Lithium Silicate do the job? is it food safe? I have no access to brands in the US market and should know the general term rather than the brand.
Excellent videos. I'm going to seal a concrete driveway in the Cleveland Ohio area. Based on your videos, I'm thinking a Silconates. I'm not sure about a cleaner. What would you recommend?
I like the Safe 'n Easy line of cleaners from Dumond. They have half a dozen or so different cleaners. I would stay away from the concrete cleaners at the big box home improvement stores. I haven't had much luck with those.
I have a very old concrete driveway, a few oil stains, but mostly just dirty, discolored looking. I was thinking of power washing and applying sealer. But, you recommend using a chemical cleaner and then sealing. Could you tell me a brand product of each the cleaner and sealer that you like? Thank you, John
I have a blind wall and no matter I cannot apply any sealer from the exposed side of the wall as i have some issue with the neighbor. Can you recommend a product that i can use on this wall? How deep this product penitrating? Can i inject it to the wall?
I recently poured a 2 new layers of concrete on my flat roof. I gave the last layer an angle of inclination but couldn't be too steep. Should I seal that concrete?
Thanks for this. Maybe you can help me with something. I'm making concrete flower pots. I use elastomeric waterproofing as a primer and color it with latex paint. Is it better to use concrete sealer as my final coat or do i just leave the pot as it is with just the primer and latex color? What concrete sealer should i use if ever? How many coating? It's kinda humid here in our place, philippines, but it's typhoon season now so heavy rains for several months. I'm a newbie with painting so i don't know what to use to prolong the color of the pots. Thanks again!
By the way, i tried final coating the pots with clear emulsion paint and dead flat lacquer. Both altered the color and when exposed to the elements, it's not that durable.
Quick question, I'm going to be applying a layer of white cement to an outdoor cement wall. is it necessary to perform the cleaning of the wall after the white cement layer before sealing it? thanks, love your videos.

Thank you for the 3 part series. Im looking to seal my garage floor due to a major sweating issue.
I would of never known concrete sealing works that well. Thanks.
Glad to help
Great video series! thanks
Excellent info. Just getting ready to seal my garage floor.
I can do this ! Before watching these 3 vids I was completely clueless about what to do with my filthy driveway . Just waiting a couple of weeks for the Texas heat to let up then I’m all in . Thank you for doing such a great job on this series . Subbed .
Great explanation! Thank you
Exceptional! - at 5:34 , that was it. Thankyou.
may I know what product you used in this video? I need the brand name or if you can suggest me any affordable product it will be better
Very helpful as I have read articles until blind, almost. Thank you and keep doing these. Donnie Morgan, Texan / American

I have 26x26 exterior patio what can i use to make it look great but not have to do it year after year. I wouldnt mind a shiny look
Great video Chris👍
May i ask if i can install tile on the concrete floor after sealed with penetrating sealer?
Yes, you can. The penetrating sealers do interfere with the mechanical adhesion of thinset or mortar.

Will the silicone sealer stop oil absorption, too?
just took a bunch of notes thank you very much!!
would had been nice if you told us what brand to buy. why did you leave this important bit out?
@SANDRA MUNOZ - For some reason TH-cam won't let me reply to your comment so I'm posting my reply as a separate comment:

@@ToolboxDIY Oh no, I meant wet look for my brick stamped concrete.
I live in Arizona where we have temps above a 100 degrees for over 4 months, will this high temp affect the sealer
Do you put sealer on before you paint the driveway or before?
Great job, very helpful and informative. Very professional 👍

Do I need to seal it again and if so, do I need to strip off the old sealer? Can I just buff it or wax it to get rid of the stickiness? I think that the old sealer was water based.
Hi Chris, can I use your three steps for indoor living space? I have moisture coming through carpet and laminate is swelling up.
My garage floor was sealed 5 years ago. I want to reseal my garage floor do I have to strip the old seal ?
Can you apply a top coat sealer for a finish over a silicinate
Sealer like this on high polished concrete will have good traction? And no need for a wax on top right?
This sealer has no impact on traction and no need to wax it. This isn't a film sealer so you won't even notice it until it rains.
What brand of sealer are you using?
So, if I seal now, can I in the future put tiles over?
Thx!
Concrete can cause long terms problems if you are consistently in that room so he mindful
Thank you for your response. I appreciate you!
On interior high traffic freshly poured concrete, can I use a penetrating sealer first, then use an epoxy coating for the top coating?
In theory you could but I'm not sure it's worth it and I would defer to the epoxy manufacturer's recommended application techniques.
Maybe I missed something , but in the end you made note that ' 2 to 3 coats' and good to go. Is that whats recommended?
Most sealers recommend a single coat, but in my experience 2 is the minimum.
Do you believe that the sealant will reduce mold growth and dirt settlement on the concrete?
It definitely helps with mold. Dirt will still settle but it comes off a lot easier.
Does the sealer help with concrete dust. I washed my concrete plenty of time and still have concrete dust. If I go outside in the concrete and walk inside the house you can see white foot print from the dust!
How often should I seal my concrete? Every 5-7 years?
Hello can this seal precast concrete bonds 2mm apart?
Plz show the brand of concrete seal you used!!!!!
I find most of these sealers are on par with one another, but in the interest of transparency, this one was Vseal 101.
Which dealers are safe to plants
Great series. Clear communication and intonation. Informative and the thourough. Great work. It's appreciated 🙏
I have a blind wall and no matter I cannot apply any sealer from the exposed side of the wall as i have some issue with the neighbor. Can you recommend a product that i can use on this wall? How deep this product penitrating? Can i inject it to the wall?
Can i use concrete sealer for my pond?
Kick Ass Tutorial...thank for sharing
Both altered the color and when exposed to the elements, it's not that durable.
ive used a solvent natural sealer on my concrete, can i still use a silicate?
Is it a good idea to use a penetrating sealer before using an epoxy?
Quick question, I'm going to be applying a layer of white cement to an outdoor cement wall. is it necessary to perform the cleaning of the wall after the white cement layer before sealing it? thanks, love your videos.
No need to clean the wall after applying the white cement. If you get to it quickly, you can skip the cleaning and go directly to sealing. Good luck!
