  • Buster Keaton was an actor, comedian and filmmaker. He is best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression that earned him the nickname "The Great Stone Face".
Dick Beals, a voice actor best known for injecting youthful boomer enthusiasm into the character of Speedy Alka-Seltzer in 1958
Alka-Seltzer was developed by head chemist Maurice Treneer, and marketed for relief of minor aches, pains, inflammation, fever, headache, heartburn, stomachache, indigestion, acid reflux and hangovers, while neutralizing excess stomach acid. It was launched in 1931.

Buster Keaton could make reading a page from the phone book funny- even in a silent film!

Thanks for posting these! I love Buster Keaton and never knew that these ads existed! Really enjoy the contrast between the "Great Stone Face" and the perky Speedy Alka Seltzer!

Keaton also was in the Posters for Levy's Rye Bread too--Those were posted all over the Subway stations and Bus Stops in New York City.

Yes! As a New Yorker who grew up there in the 1960s Mad Men era, I saw them and loved those advertisements, Jack Gilford was on some other ads too as well as Cracker Jack's candy commercials on TV. That was the last time kids in America could enjoy a normal childhood.

I was only 2 when this was on, but the jingle continued into the 1960s. When commercials were fun to watch as well as TV itself. In Old NYC in Old America ! Mad Men era!

Go figure. Buster once was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Reduced to Alka-seltzer commercials. Ironically I use the stuff all the time. Buster, "General Lee" lives!!!

They came in long clear glass bottles/jars. Plastic was new. I guess aluminum foil is cheaper, but that crystal clear tubular jar was prettier, and more interesting. I wanted to keep it, and make something from it.

Their slogan was You Don't Have to be Jewish to love Levy's Rye Bread.

Even an Indian tribal chief from the west was used! My late mother bought that bread to make sandwiches for my school lunch.
