      I've watched this whole show through a few times over the years and his drummer seemed to have an off night....as you can see at the beginning EJ turned toward the drummer and then gave him some percussive strums with the correct tempo. I don't think he (drummer) really ever pulled it out. On another song (I don't recall...possibly Trademark) EJ completely stopped the song (and it wasn't cut from the original) and went back and talked to the drummer for quite some time....talking over the rhythm before finally restarting the song. I've never seen EJ get frazzled like that before or since.

      @@jasonring5231 I think EJ was getting crushed by the pressure, to be honest. In later interviews he admitted that he played a bum note (You can just barely hear it) on the start of the song you're mentioning and it bothered him so much he felt the need to restart.

      @@Enryu_CZX I was not really making a comprehensive list of requirements I was pointing out that art comes about through human effort and potential rather than supernatural intervention whatever that even means.
      But on a side note both “genius” and “creativity” are elusive or contested concepts that can be taken to mean a lot of different things or nothing at all if you look at how they’re conceptualised across a range of fields of research. In many ways the jury is really out on particularly what creativity is supposed to mean at a scientific level of understanding.
      However “divine intervention” is not a candidate hypothesis that has managed to establish itself as even potentially viable - or really explain or illuminate anything about the subject at all …

    • @Enryu_CZX
      @Enryu_CZX 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@whynottalklikeapirat "art comes about human effort and potential " that's basically what I meant too I guess you can say that you need the ability to write music that many people would enjoy and that just comes from within and skills are developed through several hours of consistent practice

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Enryu_CZX One should perhaps not put too much stock in potential in the long term. The ability to write music is not something that comes about out of nowhere for most people, it is a skill that can certainly be practiced.
      I have written a fair amount of music myself and taught at lot of people to do it. There are many ways into that. It is a little bit artifical I find, to make too strong of a separation between form and content or technique and artfulness. At this stage in my life, songs or melodies fairly frequently present themselves to me, somewhat out of nowhere or sometimes in dreams, but this is only because I have spent half a life time stuffing my subconscious with tunes and licks and practicing improvising - and made a point out of listening for something and holding on as it emerges. And I am just a semi-professional doing it for the hell of it.
      But I do work with artists (and scientists) in different fields who are at the very forefront of their fields, at least one of which could be considered a genius of a kind at what he does - and they tend to have a more of a “nothing comes from nothing” view of art and the creative process as both artists and teachers. They put a lot of emphasis on the craft, skill, technique, doing, performing and improvisation aspect of what they do. Many would say that 80-90% of what they do in improv comes from stuff already “in the backpack” repurposed for the moment.
      And great more composed pieces that are about something usually do not just occur without some kind of prior process be that research or deep reflected life experience, and what facilitates that is developing a language and a specific craft as an artist.
      When you do THAT something essential about your own nature, life experience and unique sensibilities may shine through clearly lending depth to the piece or the performance but it also won’t overtake what the performance is about. It enables the person to not get in the way of themselves with the wrong kind of focus or too many overthought contrivances.
      In a sense one could say that the internalised, embodied technique is not something external or separate from the creative process - it too comes from within and it’s all part of the complexity that produces the kind of output people within a given culture and time will experience as or consider artful.
      What I am more than suggesting is that the “inner work” also is a skill that professional artists train. Stanislavski (the father of modern acting technique) famously wrote two main volumes on that - one dedicated to the inner and one to the outer work of the actor.
      I have had conversations with opera singers who will maintain without question that it is the technique which ensures that you are not lost in your own private emotions that may come and go, but instead allows you to reliably create or convey any number emotions in a desired manner for the audience to feel - and to do so consistently and with a fairly level head.
      Certainly once you pass a certain level of artistry, the notion of talent becomes less interesting, because everyone at that level have the prerequisite skills and qualities that go into that and the question now becomes how best to further hone it.
      The notion of the sort natural born, creative genius has been challenged a in recent years and is deemed overly romantic by some and a bit useless by others within contemporary scientific discourse on creativity.
      I don’t think one dismiss outliers such as a Mozart or Wagner in terms of what one might call genius, but they were most likely not neurotypical, and it is debatable how descriptive that is of what 90%+ people working within a given field actually does and how they function cognitively.
      So there was long story, if you made it this far I salute you, if not thats ok too 😄👍

    What's wild is, my cousin, who lives in Austin, looked kinda like Eric at the same age (and he's only about 5 years younger than Eric). I've been a fan of this guy since the mid-80's and thankfully saw him twice in the 80's in Austin.

    Thanks for the upload! Great live version!!! He was so youthful, looked like a child prodigy in this one.It makes me feel old, but then again, I am! But I am wondering what the deal is with all of the flowers?

    Looks like he went straight from school to the gig. I expected to see his satchel lying on top of the amp.
