a f_cking gunner, there are many aspects into the entire story..... LCA was supposed to cover up 30% of the Mig fleets which were to be retired and the 70% was to be covered by Rafael. Now Rafael is a medium weight fighter while Tejas is a light aircraft. bridging the gap between the phased out Migs and heavy fighters like Su-30mki is not possible with LCA alone. There are certain limitations to LCA. INDIA opted for Rafael to stop the fall of fighter squadrons for a very limited time. In the meantime, Gripen comes as a new age fighter. We still have the option of procuring more Rafael with the French. We were provided with 2 options for more fighter jets. 1st was the F-16 latest variant and the 2nd was Gripen. Pak already has F-16 and know the aircraft better than we do. Gripen comes as more useful since the US will phase out these aircrafts (f-16) in 2 decades or so. Striking the deal for F-16 will take at least 3 years, and then the entire delivery would be completed in another 5 years. so using the jet for just 10-12 (almost half of its service life) years isn't a good idea. Gripen is a newer generation fighter and they are ready to set an assembly line in INDIA as well.
