    Just to clarify the mileage after I asked my neighbour. The bike has done 200,000+ KM's, had a top end rebuild at around 130,000 in Munich, Germany. Other than that, just regular servicing.

    Great story indeed as many have said, I sent the link to my father who is also mid 70's and the below is his response having experienced the era first hand so to speak......
    ''He certainly got his money's worth. I don't think the handlebars are original fit. The gear changes seem as noise as I remember. In the days the Germans could still buy Zundapp flat twins and there was interest in lighter British twins, the German BMW critics called 'beemers' farmers bikes. My Jawa had an ignition key very similar to the one shown. The Czechs were forced to make DKWs for the Germans so they must have cribbed the idea.Back in the 1960's most buyers opted for the R60 600cc model, so that R50 must be very rare these days''.

    That takes me back, I had a 1962 R50 in 1967. It had a few "S" bits - rocker boxes and air cleaner, and so I was told " S " camshaft. I was only 20, it was the type of bike that put you on your best behavior. Having said that it was good for 80 all day long and a good 90 flat out, happy days!

    Love the video! Nothing like the sound of a /2! My father left me his 1967 R50/2, and it’s puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Definitely agree with the brakes, give yourself that extra space. I’ve updated my brake shoes to a modern material along with new cables, and it does help, but still give yourself that extra space. Safe travels!

    INteresting how stories of different people have something very common. A friend of mine went 400miles for a Royal Enfield in the 70s to GB in winter and drove home all the way without insurance almost freezing to death. But also have things that are very opposite, because he hated that bike sooo much. He called the Oilfield instead of Enfield because there was always something to fix.
    Those old BMWs are really a masterspiece of engineering for their time and made to last, they don't build bikes like that anymore and the sound in natura is just shaking it's soooo good

  • @yaniczech
    @yaniczech 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh that's a great one! Reminds me of our friend's father, who bought his first motorcycle also in the mid-60s and took it for a spin from the Netherlands all the way to Greece and back. No helmet, he departed just in his shorts and a shirt.
    Stories like this really make me kind of jealous of the real adventures back in the day, that really must have felt like the proper "exploring" :))) Cheers!

    50 years ago they would have been the best road bike brakes you could get, on more or less the only bike that would run at high speed without leaking oil and vibrating parts off. Unfortunately, they looked funny and cost twice as much as a British bike, so very few were sold. BMW had to first fit telescopic forks, creating the R69US, then design the more up to date and easier to manufacture /5 series, which saved BMW Motorrad. Now we oldies who wouldn't have been seen dead on a /2 40 years ago can appreciate just how good they were. Nice video RJ, and I hope I will still be riding in 10 years' time.

    I'm certainly glad to be IN THE FUTURE... In an age of drones, smartphones, wireless broadband, electric cars and smart homes... Where any information is just a click (or perhaps a 'tap') away...
    But when i see old beauties like this, I really wish I wasn't born in the 90s...! I absolutely love & respect the carbs, the simplicity (side valves?), the air-cooling, and the kick-starter of old bikes... No ABS, no Traction Control, not even CDI (I suppose)...

    Wow - great bike and fantastic story of the rider. Good on you for helping him out as well.
    Quite a few vids back I came across a vintage bike rally, and talked to one of the marshals who had a 1955 BMW R69 Sports 600. He had not owned it since new, but the bike looked like it had just come off the showroom floor - in spite of the fact he also rode his bike most days.

    That's a nice bike and a nice story too. :) I have a friend in the same situation: he bought a (Hungarian made, so not very well known 250ccm 2T) Pannonia P10 brand new in 1969 and can't live without it. :)

    That engine is just music to my ears I love it! Also it's even better with head phones on!

    Fantastic looking bike, I love the indicators and the key, it would be nice if modern manufacturers took inspiration for their new "retro" style bikes.

      according to www.flhsmv.gov/fhp/History/images/DDLtimeline.pdf it seems US driving licenses included motorcycles until 1983, so as an american in the 60s, he propably had the license to drive it, without ever having touched a motorcycle before :)
