I did this study with our small group. My conclusion was that Andy Stanley has serious psychological issues related to his childhood, and that tempers his view of the Old Testament. At then end of the study, I questioned everything that Andy said, and disagreed with many of his opinions. I used scripture the support my views, Andy's view were not based on scripture, simply his emotional opinion.
The point is not that the Old Testament is irrelevant - Andy teaches from the Old Testament all the time. The point is how do you view and handle the Old Testament in light of the fact that Jesus introduced something new? In fact, the author of the book of Hebrews declared the old law useless and when then there is a changing of the priesthood (since Jesus is from the tribe of Judah, not Levi), there is also a changing of the law. The centrality of the Christian faith and it’s cornerstone is not the Old Testament, even though it is inspired and we can learn lessons from it. It is, as Paul said - the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Everything hangs on that one event. Take that away and we have nothing. Too many Christians have based their faith in a version of Christianity that when presented with compelling evidence to the contrary, lose their faith. Or they try to mix and match stuff from the Old Testament as governing principles in the church that ends up with a distorted, theological mess. Yes - the entire Bible is inspired and useful for teaching and training but Jesus warned against putting new wine in old skins which for many of us who grew up in church, is exactly what we’ve done. We’re under a New Covenant now. The Old Testament was the shadow. In Jesus Christ, we have the reality.
