    I started sleeping in a hammock last year. I slept out in it at 40 and I was very warm. I had an under quilt, sleep pad and a 0 degree sleeping bag open like a top quilt. I want to sleep in colder weather little by little. Your information is excellent. Thanks

    Great series. I'm all on board with what I need now but I watch anyway. I do have some advice for top layers. If your using more than one layer in a hammock it can be a real pain in the butt. If you have two "slick" covers they will just slide right off of you. It happened to me using a Costco quilt and a military poncho liner. If you have quilts with foot boxes that might work but I dunno. Just beware is doesnt work. It was very frustrating.

    I prob go more in sub 0F than other temps. As a result, I use the pad in hammock setup. Because it works and is the smallest pack size & weight. Underquilt and overwuilt are great for 20sF. Lower temps and it's just not enough and need the pad. I like the rectangular pad in hammock.

    Great video. I will be checking out the entire series. I am new to hammock tents. I used one for the first time this year as I have returned to back country camping. My first trip saw temps down to mid 30s. I had a light weight 3 season bag (more like 1 season) and needless to say I froze. I am not new to back country camping and long used sleeping pads under my bag in traditional tents. But I hadn't even thought about it for my new hammock tent. Man its like sleeping in a refrigerator with cold air under you which I am not used to at all. So I just discovered that they have the hammock answer in under quilts and will be adding that to my list of necessities.

    Have you ever tried a reflective emergency blanket / gold foil in 45-50 deg. weather instead of added (weight) fabric of a double layer hammock and sleeping pad...or trickier underquilt setup that's useless if sleeping on a shelter floor?

  • @travisburt1317
    @travisburt1317 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best trick is to put a couple golf ball sized rocks in a fire for about 30 minutes. Then put them into a old sock, and lay on top of your core at night. Super warm. Do not put directly onto skin.. saved my life in the bwca

    What's funny is where I live it's almost a guaranteed to get down to the 20s at night in the middle of the summer. So I always have used a 15 degree bag in the summer and just snuggled with my dog in the fall. I would love a hammock but 0-15 degree quilts seem heavy and not worth the weight.

  • @MagisterCobb
    @MagisterCobb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a big fan of sleeping in a bag liner. You can get a bag liner made for a sleeping bag. It adds a couple of degrees of warmth without the expense of another quilt. By sleeping in the bag liner, you reduce the hiker funk that gets on your quilts so you don't have to wash them as often. In the summer time, I use the Costco quilts. The underquilt stays vented usually and I just sleep in the bag liner in the hammock. I take the top quilt with me just in case. Thanks again for the video!

    For folks looking into upgrading their equipment there are a number of options out there that can provide a resource to save a little cash. Hammock Gear's Econ line is a great set of products at very, very competitive prices compared to the goose down products on the market. One outlet I have been able to find some really good deals on is Massdrop. They have a drop for the ULA Ohm 2.0 right now for under $200, and it is breaking my heart that I don't have the cash right now to take advantage. They have also done drops for Enlightened Equipment and many other cottage vendors. Just a suggestion. It's definitely worth checking out even if you don't ultimately buy anything.

    Still haven't been converted to hammock camping but watch because my boyfriend is still new to it. He won his hammock at a hammockhang that we went to check out. He moved out of the tent that night as the organizer lent him an underquilt and because we only had one tree at our tent site they attached the other end to the roof rack on my Escape and refuses to come back. Without having the money for an underquilt he just slit the end of his mummy bag and concoons himself. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  • @otway00
    @otway00 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have always told new hangers they need to test their gear under controlled conditions ( like your backyard ) to make sure your gear performs as needed. Reflectix is a vapor barrier and works ok under you, If used as a blanket it will trap moisture from your body and you can get wet. I prefer to use a 3/4 length UQ and if it is going to be cold, I just throw my jacket down to the foot end of the hammock and rest my feet on that for insulation.
