I still think it's better to have the thermostat replaced, it's not expensive and for the engine it's better to run at the correct temperature, not only because of fuel consumption but also to prevent extensive wear. Of course a separate diesel heater is also a good idea for when you are stationary on a campsite 😄
My fuel gauge says half tank when it's actually almost empty, haven't been able to find a replacement as of yet. Bedford cf 1980. Your van looks clean and straight looks like it's been loved before, Happy days!
I'm.sure at one point it was loved but then sadly neglected till I bought her. My last campers fuel gauge was a bit like that 😆. Not quite worked out Nettys yet.
On some older vehicles ,it is possible to reach up under and release! After having to find out this the hard way ,i had to fabricate a bracket , utilising a chain and padlock for security!😊😊 Maybe you can on yours!😊😊
@adrianmichell-z6o Oh the RAC guy had obviously encountered this problem a few times lol. He told me to pull the lever and he banged on the bonnet....ta dah it was released 😊
@@carol_ann_living.in.the.moment The RAC are brilliant ! Your release catch was stuck then ! Mine unfortunately had a broken cable! I hope you used your lithium spray.🙂🙂
@leonielawrenson7606 Thank you 😊. I'm staying on another day as the weather isn't looking great across central Yorkshire which was where I was going to stay on the journey back. X
I love that you are so positive. a year from now you will know your engine and all its quirks and foibles. I’m wishing you and yours all the very best and I cannot wait until you do the NC500😊. Subscribed for more. All the best from Scottish Rab😅
@@carol_ann_living.in.the.moment I have old talbot she goes for mot next week and I'm like you can't wait to get out with her lol.. Fair play to you luv living life and can't fault you. Love your videos hope one day to see you on a camp site soon lol xx.
Please stay safe and warm out there. Enjoy the scenery Watch out for the idiots on the road...they always appear on the roads in bad weather. Have a really lovely time 🤗 If you ever consider venturing down to the East Sussex - 1066 area, let me know it would be an honour to meet you and be your guide....an area steeped in History - Battle of Hastings took place a couple of miles from me... The Birthplace of British Motor Racing to a history of Smuggling.
The best bit of advice I ever got from my driving Instructor over 50+ years Ago! ... " Always Drive As Though Every Other Motorist Is An IDIOT!" ...... Driving all this time and not ONE!...---.... NO! - Better not tempt fate 🤨😄
Its almost certainly the heater matrix valve stuck closed or a problem with the cable that operates it wen you move temp lever for setting temp in the cab
If you brake down at Garraby Hill there is still the old AA box 573 at the bottom 😁 PS The horn blow at the little puddle was just a Yorkshire welcome to Brid 😊
We have an old Talbot, K reg and every hill we come to, we encourage her with nice compliments,I know we mad but it’s worked so far,the Peak District was a challenge, we can get to 20 miles an hour up hill. Have a great time ❤
@sandracorbett6780 I find rocking forwards and backwards helps 🤣🤣. You've just got to give them any help you can haven't you lol. I'm hoping to get to the peak district the end of the month, love it around Castleton. Just won't make the same mistake as last time and drive through Winnats Pass 🙈🤣😊
I have a 1988 Renault trafic camper, I find if you build some momentum before you start to incline, and open the blowers in the cab to take some heat off the engine and keep foot down in third gear until you reach the top, all is well. Steeper hills, a steady 20 mph in 2nd and don't lose your nerve
I'm definitely feeling the cold now I'm back in the UK,after six weeks just before and over the Christmas period in Tenerife with most days averaging 25 to 28 degrees, but it does go colder at night but you only need to wear a jumper and a pair of trousers to stay warm, but a friend and his girlfriend who have lived there for nearly 11 years now, but they still come back to the UK for about a week or so in the winter, because constantly having sunshine every day can become boring, but in the UK we never know what weather we will be getting the next day, neither did Michael fish some time in the 90's we're not going to get a storm this evening,he was right there because we got a bleeding hurricane instead 😂👍
Plenty going on during this adventure Carol 🙄 but I guess that's not unusual 😂 ...and seems like it's been a really worthwhile opportunity to see how Netty handles the trip 🙌 Pleased that you had a lovely couple of days in the snow with Evie-Rose ❤️...and hope exploring some of the walks at the new location has been exciting 🙏 Take care and good luck with the next leg Carol 🤗 🤗
Netty looks a good motor .I think she sounds like the Tappits need checking as going down to 19 mph ,it's underpowered .I used to drive a Bedford CF Luton body .Fully loaded with plants .All the best, Carol . You are a star 🌟 🤩
@carol_ann_living.in.the.moment That's good to know .Some engines do make more noise .The Bedford ,you had to shout to hear the person beside you .Really it true .😆
Having a working thermostat will make a profound difference to the cooling and heating of the engine . Those engines were very prone to cam follower wear , might explain the lack of power . Have you had the compressions checked ?
Driving a tramper van is challenging. I know its hard but you have to ignore the traffic behind you. I've just towed a line of cars out of Dieppe today up a hill in third gear 40mph, delayed them for all of 3 mins, I'm aware but don't care.. I'm at the start of a 2500 mile round trip to Cadiz, it can be done, did last year as well. Once you get your engine sorted they are reliable vans. If you do change your thermostat beware that the replacement part may not have whats called a jiggle valve (yes it really is called that). As I found with mine its almost impossible to bleed the system without one. Good luck.
Do the thermostat as your motor will last longer and love you for it, more efficient running at running temp (around 90 decrees) . Just as critical in the summer as it slows the flow of water and allows it to stay in the radiator for longer to cool.. Enjoyed your video, looks a little cold in the UK. Not the greatest here in NZ for the middle of summer, hasn't stopped raining for the last few of weeks, farmers are happy.
Hi Carol your doing really well first time away in Netty, First time is a test run if there are any problems you can sort after trip, Then next out your sorted, As Glyn said here in comments cardboard you can even put some kitchen foil on to make it waterproof, it sure works i did own an old 1971 Landrover diesel and heating system were always poor in them and winter i would cover up front and to keep cold off engine i later picked up a Landrover cover made for them with a opening section that would roll up, Any way enjoy trip and take care xx👍❤
Get yourself a diesel heater girl they are not expensive on ebay, easy to install also I have the same van as you mines a 92 heater works great on mine and yeah struggles up hills 😂 Best of luck girl👍😉
HI Carol its me again well done if you can get around in this weather you can manage the motorhome life,I was chewing my fingernails when you was tackling that hill a new thermostat is not abig job inside the top of the radiator is a valve that opens and shuts to keep your water at yhe right temperature a small blob of wax that mellts when it gets hot and visza vis when cold this control the valve. the damp on your roof could be condensation in this weather.Your fuel problem will come and go pour fuel pump cant work properly without air if cap is blocked so get that seen to it wont go away and you will then get more speed from you engine.sorry if this is long winded answer so dont worry! after 25 year of vanning ive seen it all enjoy(jogalong).
Hi Carol, you are certainly having a good adventure but you are doing well, and i have come to notice you like to live on the crazy side life at times, but it is all good keep it up
Love ti walk the dogs with you

Its not good for engines to be running too cool in winter. Running without any thermostat is bad advice 😢,yes.
Glad to hear there nothing seriously wrong with Netty. Hope you and Moll had a nice warm cosy night, and I'm looking forward to your next video ♥
@2Sheds30619 Thank you and I'm pretty relieved too 😊
Really enjoyed watching ... wow how much snow lol all we had was a sprinkling 😂 .... well done ❤
I'm glad all is well. It wouldn't be winter without snow.❤

Put a big piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and that should warm it up xx
That's a good idea or actually half the rad.
@ you could do it all because they have an electric fan I believe thank you for your kind comment it an old school trick done it many times myself
You could get a supermarket delivery to the campsite if you get stuck.
Good idea, I'm OK now though as ive moved sites 😊

Many people with old vehicles, cover or partially cover the radiator to help in very cold weather.
