We had a project on a hill like that earlier this year. We ended up bringing a 30’ step ladder that we staked into place (fence went straight up vertically). Luckily the digging wasn’t too bad so we drove the posts. Thanks for the awesome video. You guys are the best
Hey, thank you for doing this. I thought about doing it for years, but I’ve heard horror stories so now I know the horror stories are definitely true. And I came across an old foam fence couple weeks ago that had the same issue.
Used post foam for my mailbox and first rain it tried to float out of the hole. Now I have cement step stones on the edges of the hole to keep it from floating away.
Great video Dan, Nick and Team, that’s too bad I like the idea of setting posts with foam but it’s definitely not where it needs to be yet. Good on you guys for knowing to go back to setting with concrete for this application 💪 Have a great dang day!!!
Why didn’t you guys use a jet sled with a rope atttached to slide the bags of concrete down slowly instead of walking them down. Also why didn’t you try heating the holes up with a big propane torch before adding the foam? Once that rocky soil was heated up it would have stayed warm for awhile because of the rocks.
I like that heating the hole idea. We should've tried that. It was getting to the point where we needed to move on to something we knew for sure was going to work.
I would be very interested to see a 1 year, 5 year, and 10 year revisit to this job to see how this really works. Concrete is hard work, but I have no doubt what it will be like decades later.
@luv14lyf Although the directions say you can do that, it is not ever going to be even half as strong as premixing the concrete and water and pouring it in.
How does this stuff work with large rock around the post? Honestly though, I’m not sure how concrete is around large stone in a hole…. I guess the stone would mess with the tension of the concrete itself leaving a weak area maybe..?
Seems like wherever you got the Fast2K, it was over priced. You can get them at Lowes a bit south of you (Denver, CO) for 12.28, though they don't have any in stock right now. I think its just too late in the season to be messing with stuff that needs to be 65-85F though unfortunately. I do like the idea of using some closed cell foam as maybe something to just set the posts before running a ton of concrete. Not for pros like you all, but maybe if you are doing DIY by yourself and want to just focus on running the concrete once the posts are already straight.
A montana on a spider excavator would have done excellent. But those are very spendy. Ive driven post on that steep but had top access for a winch line
Obviously, why didn't you preheat the bags to about 100 F to help the foam to react properly? Those guys instead of rolling rocks down on you had karma come to them in having to haul over 10,000 pounds of concrete.
Probably could have used pinned plywood to slide the concrete down. As far as the foam, it sounds and looks like something only a yuppy would use on their 2nd or 3rd home. You know when they are faking their way through a cool story for their coworkers.

😂 that digging is what we call in nova scotia... pretty good. It's a good day when we don't have to use a jack hammer.
Wow I didn’t know Dan could get that aggressive with a post! He’s always such a nice calm guy.
😆

All fence post holes are recommended to be dug wider at the bottom
Excellent demo. Thanks for sharing.
👍👍👏👏🇺🇲🇺🇲

Yea I could see that. So it’s fair to say that using foam is a summer time option only?
For us, yes. 😁
@@SWiFencealso, keep the bags warm in an igloo with a couple heat packs. Take out when ready to use.
Would love to see the build on this job too😎
What is the name of rock bar that “peanut” was using?

19:22 could you have use the no mix concrete, where you pour the bag of
concrete in and then the water?

have you made any videos about cutting the posts to height?
Would it be possible to use a large plastic trash bag as liner in the hole?

Couldn't it be it was too cold for it to harden?
That's what I'm kind of thinking now. We didn't condition the foam to the proper temperature beforehand.
Them boys are country strong!
5 gallon bucket, cut a hole in the bottom put the pole in pour the foam in let it set, it would be an interesting experiment.
I build fence in the rockys and that is one insane splope
Would it be safe to assume that no Post Driver would have been successful there?

Also the rock situation was crazy.
Needs a montana on a spider excavator

I used foam one time. The bag exploded before ten seconds. What a disaster.
😬
