  • What an extraordinary moment to be alive, Cycling in a 1000 hills of Rwanda, fully immersed in the Kigali City Bike Tour Series.
If you have followed our previous Kigali City Bike Tour Series, you will recall that I previously paused Kigali City Bike Tour Series from Kigali Down Town, and I now pick up where I left off, commencing from the vibrant Kigali Car Free Zone. This remarkable initiative, initiated eight years ago on August 26, 2015, has truly transformed the heart of Kigali into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly haven. The core objective of this initiative is to promote walking and cycling as primary modes of transportation.
In 2021, the Rwandan government considered expanding and rebranding this zone to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance infrastructure, and champion environmental sustainability and quality of life. It was renamed to “Imbuga City Walk”
What made this particular leg of the Kigali City Bike Tour truly exceptional way my cycling companion, Christophe Habimana. I am immensely grateful to have such adventurous soul as we venture through the 1000 hills together. This adventure followed another recent with fellow biking enthusiasts and a master class at the Engage Africa Foundation Festival 2023. The masterclass focused on hiking and biking for health, with a special emphasis on building a physically active community in the land of a 1000 hills to raise awareness, advocate for breast cancer, conduct research and provide social support!
Our incredible journey took us through a captivating itinerary, starting from the Car Free Zone, Kanogo, Sonatubes, Remera Giporoso, Nyandungu, Economic Free Zone, Carnegie Mellon University, Azam, Bumbogo bwa Nkuzuzu, Mukuyu ya Ndera, Gikomero, Muhazi Lake, Rutunga, Kavejuba, Rusine, Nyacyonga, Kabuye, Jabana, Kagugu ka Gisozi, Gacuriro, Nyarutarama, Kisimenti, and Remera Amahoro Stadium.
Throughout our adventure, we pondered a compelling question: How big or small Kigali is compared to the countryside mountains we usually ride through? Our observation revealed that Kigali can be conquered within a single day of mountain biking, highlighting its relatively compact size.
In the upcoming episodes, we will take you through the various places we have explored, and this particular episode will take you from the Car Free Zone, through Kanogo and Sonatube, all the way to Remera - Good Year!
Thank you for joining us on this episode, and we look forward to sharing more breathtaking locations in Kigali, whether the road or off-road. Stay tuned for the upcoming adventures!
