Man, this is one of my first memories of being "Wait, that's it?" as a kid. I loved this game in the arcade, bought it for the NES, beat it that first weekend and was like "....oh."
Also worth a shoutout is the modern remaster. It's incredibly faithful to the arcade version and is one of those rare games that feels like playing a cartoon.
You're right that it doesn't feel like a game from 1991, but it's still not a bad one. I remember enjoying my playthrough of it. It's not 'that' hard, though it has a few tricky sections here and there (I played the US version though, which is easier). Overall, it's another good action/platformer game. This makes it one of few decent ape games on the system. >_>
There are loads of ports of this game... besides the Arcade game - Amiga, Lynx, Atari ST, Commodore 64, iOS, Macintosh, Windows, NES, Switch, PlayStation 4, Genesis, Xbox One (yeah, you can buy it on Steam/modern consoles too).
I had the US version, complete in box (for some reason,) back when I had a NES collection. My favorite thing about it was how stupid looking the bosses were, but the rest of the game's humor from the arcade game didn't translate very well to 8-bit. The arcade game is only memorable (for me,) for being so dumb and silly. There are much funnier looking/playing NES and Famicom games than this port.

okay that is some boxart, haha. never got around to this one but I mean it looks fun!
I’m pretty sure we got this here in the states as well. Toki by Taito
I quite liked the arcade version of this back in the day and this port looks pretty solid. 🙂

I thought this was just a Genesis game

That might be because Moby Games seems to have the Mega Drive port as it's own database entry for whatever reason.

Have you seen the weirdly pretentious ending to the NES version?
Invest in a RGB mod for both your Famicoms or buy a RetroUSB NES AVS system to improve that horrible video quality.
the series is about the games and not about pretentious retro video quality elitism. we can see the game just fine
There are plenty of other channels on TH-cam if this one fails to meet your needs! 😆
