Which pond do you like better?! It's not black and white for me, but if I had to choose I like this one the best. Also, what do you think of this one's progress?
Do you think your pond could handle the amount of debris a duck makes?? Really specific but I'm trying to build a duck pond and I don't know what's the best way.
Hey Serpa :) you likely didn't see a lot more fish because of the American Toads, I have Toads in my pond and they eat most of the fish eggs if I don't control the number of Toads. Your pond looks awesome! :)
Seeing the vibrations in the water when the toad was doing it's extended call was pretty cool. I like how the back pond has come along. I think the flaws give it character but no project is ever truly done, at least for me, since there will always be something to tweak (which is part of the fun in my opinion).
I absolutely love this pond. I think your "giant wood box" looks good there. It gives it a home-like feel. I would be so happy to have a similar pond in the future.
I'm having a lot of fun with my homemade frog pond. Growing impatiens in the water and trying out my elephant ears in the water this year. Looking good. They get better and better each year you play around
This is what I love about your channel. You don't just show the pretty project and how to make it, you also show the hard work of maintaining it that some won't realize is a necessary part of the project.
SerpaDesign, you are really hard on yourself. Your DIY pond looks great. It's pretty and functional. The fish look happy. It's surrounded by beautiful flowers. I'd be so happy if that were in my yard. Relax and enjoy.
Overall you’ve done quite a nice job with this being your first pond build. Looks like the fish are doing well, and it was great to see that the toads decided to pay you a visit!
I love that you keep the rest of the environment in mind! The wildflowers and creeping Charlie are beautiful to look at and really are great for keeping the environment healthy ☺️
Just a thought. If you popped a large market umbrella down into the ground beside the filter box, painted the sides green and put some chairs around it, it could be a nice outdoor table to sit around for meals and drinks. With the wooden sides of the pond painted deep green, they would blend into the garden ... I think it's a lovely oasis in your yard and the fish are living their best life... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's just me....but....I really like the wooden box that hides the waterfall/filter. It looks well built and blends with the fence. I really like your pond.
Sonya Tippet honestly i feel like this is the same account because every one of "Jartopia"'s comments have this under it (at least that ive seen on here)
This one's my favorite! I think the angular shape (and yes even the big wooden box) look very neat, and make sense in a mown yard with a fence - a pond will never look "natural" surrounded by lawn, and this one knows it and makes the best of it. It looks less out-of-place to my eye than your front yard pond. I like the waterfall of the outflow. And it achieves its goals for plants and fish admirably!
A skyrocket pennisetum or some blue fescue! And behind that a Bloodgood Japanese maple. Some more vertical bigger pieces and a bigger drifts would really make this section pop
@@intigray I understand about some of the plants and vertical growth, so I agree with you and the original comment! I loved seeing the toads and fish! They are just delightful! ^-^ I really enjoy your pond and I know the updated version is going to be so amazing. I really look forward to seeing it!
Just a heads up. Always look at the growth rings at the end of the board. The board will cup in the same way. So orient it so that it cups downwards and doesn't catch water.
Might just be me, but you should find a way to utilize the area where the box is. Maybe put a gazebo around it. Or a bench area. Fold out table? Use the top for solar panel bubblers?
Wow. I am in awe with what you did with your DIY pond. I am not a builder. I wish I had your building skills. Job well done. Keep up the good work. You get two thumbs ☝.
It has a Japanese aesthetic. I really like it and would not change it. Maybe just replace the boards with field Stone and moss. My comet goldfish-loving heart is happy!
It all looks great! My goldfish in my 'patio pond' wintered over great, even with it freezing over twice, (except where the fountain runs). It too draws the frogs in even though it's on a porch. I love it, and I have my house plants out there surrounding it now for the summer with a hammock nearby.
I have so impatiently been waiting for an update!!! I just adore this pond (I like it better than the front pond-although that one is awesome also) and want to seriously make one just like it for myself!!! I love how your landscaping is coming in...with the loss of the grass, you can add more butterfly/pollinator/hummingbird plants!!! I still say this is Better than the pond in front yard IMO. Nice job Tanner. Been sharing your vids with friend building her own pond. Thanks Tanner. 👍👍👍
I really enjoy the look of this pond. Not really big but not too small. Personally I like the look of the wood box, I think the wooden border of the pond ties the wooden filter box in perfectly. The lights you added to the box give it a finished look that adds a little touch of detail to the overall natural look. The level being off and the boards being warped are just minor things that could be done better next time, but in all I think this pond looks great and would be ecstatic to see this in my backyard everyday.
Love the colourful fishes and the pond and LOVE the toads ! You could add plants in pots on the wooden borders to hide them a little especially with hanging plants and colourful succulents would look so good I think 😊 And also add hanging plants in pots on that wooden box to hide it, the positive side of the plants in pots is you can replace them easily and move the aside if you need to 😊
I don’t think your pond is flawed in back, I like that wood as is. I like both of those ponds, I think they are different from each other but one not necessarily better than the other. They are beautiful!
Comment from the UK....... I think you've done a great job. I've got two ponds in my garden , one about 1200 gallons and the other is about 400..... My garden is really small ( compared with yours ) They are both raised as I like the idea of being able to sit on the ponds and see the fish / wildlife up close. Once again great job & keep up the good work. Take care.
I wonder if you'd add to the waterfall/pump box like a ramp on either side and a handrail to make it look like a tiny arched bridge with waterfall flowing from underneath? That could lead to pathways and plantings? idk-you have such a nice yard. Hope you just enjoy experimenting (&sharing!). Love you, love your work, too! So glad you married a beautiful princess! Happy for you both!
I love the Creeping Charlie around the pond. We can't really have therm here as they're super invasive, but it looks so good there. I actually like the little box on the back. Not everything needs to be all-natural to be beautiful!
I have to say, I love this pond more than the aquascape one. Not that they aren’t both gorgeous, but something about the simple box construction with the plant growth is very calming and lovely to look at.
I like the front one most. your video is working like medicine in this time of isolation and depression. thank you. Would love more content from you if possible.
The amount of times you mention the commentators that said your pond would fail makes me worry! You are one of the few people that understand nature, natures ways and if not try to learn and do the research- I would say never doubt, or draw from negativity- I know that even when things don't turn out the way you expected, you will find a way to make it better. Thanks for another great video!
I'm in Tampa Florida and any kind of wood build that will setup outside needs to be treated with a preserver like Thompson Waterseal it keeps the wood laying flat and free from weathering. If you end up with boards that are warped try putting relief cuts on the curved side and reapplying the Thompson Watersealer to it. Besides all that you made some amazing ponds brother awesome job!
I’ve been wanting to make a small pond, one with minimum digging, but a great look. I like yours a lot. I think the wood gives it a zen look, and it looks great against the wood fence. Turn the box into a pagoda, you obviously have the skills! Add a Buddha.. your all set! Great looking pond! Thanks for the inspiration!
Even though your back pond looks more geometric, and showcases processed lumber, than natural rocks, it gets the key design points ABSOLUTELY spot on! Which is to make the pond a dominant feature, with the other elements being minimal accessories. The water feature for example, is small, compared to the size of the pond. Which draws you immediately to the water, where the fish are. The landscape plants are a wonderful distraction, but not enough to draw limelight away from the pond. Leaving one side open to grass, also creates an inviting pathway to the pond. Rather than thinking you have to tackle the jungle of plants, before reaching it. That's the main problem with the front pond too. There doesn't seem to be a clear pathway, to go see the wildlife in the lower pond. If you're going to re-do the back pond, I'd keep your existing design elements and focus on accessories instead. Which won't distract from the pond itself. I'd be temped to keep most of it, as it. Replace the warping lumber, with a really nice (thick) hardwood. Put an a-frame roof on the filter box, to make it look more inviting - like a rustic mini cabin. It also needs seating, so you can enjoy it like the front pond, with your wife. A bench- seat would look best on the fencing side (next to the pond) closest to the filter box. But shouldn't span the whole length of the pond. Maybe two-thirds. People can access seating, where you are in the thumbnail (next to the filter box) or come from the grass, and use the lumber as a boardwalk to the seat. A Narnia-style standing lamp, next to the seat, would not only be functional for seating at night, but during the day, would lift your eyes, higher than the filter box - drawing attention away. It would be a shame to change this completely, to be like the front pond. When it's essentially superior, in design elements. It just needs a few aesthetic changes to harmonise better. Maybe a few, large rocks placed in the plants. Largest one down the bottom (where weeds are creeping in) to give the look of anchoring the pond in place. Gold fish ponds, aren't really natural. Most originate from Asian cultures, which make an art out of blending man-made structures (ie: boxes) into natural surroundings. So you can visit the pond with ease, without sacrificing the energy from nature.
If your pump is strong enough you could always move the filter box several feet back and off to the side and build a small stream winding down between plants and then surround the box with tall grasses, could be a fun project.
I really like the waterfall coming out of the wood box! Just replace the wood with pavers-that is what I'm doing. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ENRANGERED AMPHIBIANS!!!💗😍 SO envious. I want them in my yard but pond needs to be SO big and I only have 2,500 square feet in back. 😞💔
Everything is beautiful and I love that you've created a wildlife-friendly environment! I really like the backyard pond. It's very tranquil and zen-like.
The front one is beautiful and I have no criticisms of it but I have to admit that this one is my favorite. It feels like a beautiful, modern, "Zen" feel to it.
Wonderful job. I love this pond. Time and patients is definitely key. I live vicariously through your videos because my allergies are uncontrollable. I really wish I had a green thumb. Thank you for the video.
You could add a gazebo with a swing. Try growing morel mushrooms! Make a sunflower house, do a large sand garden, build a zip line to the pond from your house!
Very cool! Just over my back fence is the bush. Often comes over and mingles with my garden. I don't have my own pond. There are natural creeks and small water falls around ✌
The pond in the front looks. Absolutely beautiful, it looks very well thought out design. I had a heron eat some of my fish and Hawks eat my frogs. My plants aren't growing fast enough to give them protection. I've got underwater hide outs for them to hide but some I lost to the herons. Great job Tanner.....
I think the wooden box is actually a pretty good look. If I ever build a pond, I'll probably do something very similar with a few cosmetic tweaks to make it suit my space. It makes a lot of sense to have the filter equipment above the ground where it's easily accessible and flows down into the pond without the need for moving a lot of soil around to create a hill.
Beautiful job!!! You really inspired me. Thank you for giving all the details about the filtration system because this is the most difficult part for me. If you don't like the look of the wooden box, consider stacking some stones around it to at least cover the walls, it will smoothen the rectangular appearance of it and will make it look more natural.
I am baffled about your garden. I never would’ve expected that much neatly mowed grass. If i had to guess, i had pictured something more wild and... cool. Something more... artsy. But still very nice.

True
Pond is easier than aquarium that for sure. Pond gets natural lighting. Gets natural temperature. And gets its own water change routine by rain.

I love the pond in the backyard. I always wanted a small pond wherever I lived but it wasn't possible (I moved a lot). Good luck with it.
4:00 those definitely blend the two areas super nicely
Thanks for thinking about the wildlife :)
Love it, the milkweeds are one of my faves, I've always added them to my gardens, their fragrance is amazing and mine grew to 4 ft, beautiful...
5:55 What a shot!! Great catch, that's awesome.
THE TOADS. They are amazing thank you so much for sharing
Your fish & frogs look very happy. Awesome, as usual!❤️🇦🇺
I am baffled about your garden. I never would’ve expected that much neatly mowed grass. If i had to guess, i had pictured something more wild and... cool. Something more... artsy. But still very nice.
You are a very inspiring individual. Thank you
