  • Breast Surgery, such as a mastectomy or lumpectomy, can be a long recovery process. Breast surgeries including mastectomies, lumpectomies, Flaps, or Implants and Reconstruction, as well as radiation treatment for breast cancer, all present unique needs. I polled my Instagram followers what they felt were the most important and helpful items during recovery from breast cancer surgery, and I compiled the answers for this video.

    A doctor friend gave me a box of chocolates. They were a great help for those times when I felt overwhelmed and afraid. I really appreciated the people who kept calling me from time to time even after the mastectomy healed. By then I’d started chemotherapy. Some friends were scared away but strong women would check in. ❤

    Im 77 and one of the most helpful item was an extendable back scratcher. Trust me, not for back scratching ..lol everything seemed to be just out of reach. Scratcher was big help.

    Great video! Wish I had this info before I had my double mastectomy…about the recliner; Mine was electric, but the buttons were down the side. After my surgery, I couldn’t even move my arm to reach the buttons. So if you are borrowing/purchasing a recliner, make sure it has a separate remote control that is easy to access or lay on your lap, etc.

    I wish I had found your channel before my surgery! I began lymphedema massages for my breast (left mastectomy and reconstruction) and abdomen (DIEP flap removal). The only items that I can add to this list are for anyone who has a shower over tub where they have to step into the tub (we live in a 100 year-old-house). I got a grab bar handle that fits over the tub edge, a stool to sit on in the tub, and we replaced our a shower head with one that has a removable hand-held head. Lifesavers over the past 5 weeks. Thank you for the information you are sharing - what a gift you are providing.

    Very good video as are all of them. Can't think of anything I would add to that list. I'm jumping ahead but if you also need radiation I recommend going to your local thrift store and getting tops that you don't care if the ointment gets on them. Well wishes to everyone viewing this video.

    Hi Kelly, I love your video, really great ideas. 2 weeks ago I had a lumpectomy for stage 1 breast cancer and a double breast reduction. I was surprised how little pain I had. I Didn’t need any opioids, just Panadol and anti inflammatories for 48 hours. I was home 18 hours post surgery. As expected my breasts are still feel tender, and uncomfortable and feel worse at the end of the day. Every one is different this may not be your experience.
    A post surgery compression bra is essential, In Australia the breast nurse will arrange for one to be sent to you for free prior to surgery, as part of your free my care kit, which included a small u shape pillow for support on your chest in the car, etc. Then Berlei gives 50% off. I ordered 2 more.
    I’m a side sleeper so I used a wedge for the first couple of days to sleep reclined on my back , then I found I could use a pregnancy u shaped pillow to support me to sleep slightly towards my side. I can’t believe how easy my surgical recovery has been. I can now do usual activities except lifting, or stretching my area high above my head.
    I only heard negative post surgery stories before my surgery, and was really concerned about the recovery. I thought I’d share a positive story.

    The recliner is great! But if you live alone you’ll need a push-button to extend the leg rest. I couldn’t flip the lever on my chair.

    • @sheila7814
      @sheila7814 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Me neither. My husband has to help me get out of it if it is reclined. When he is gone, I do not recline back in it. Pillows Pillows Pillows! That is what helped me. I put a thick one behind me so I could be up closer to the edge of the seat. My over 60 abs have been getting a work out. I wish I had been working on my abs before surgery! Walk a lot and exercise a lot before surgery.

    I am 40yrs old and have a 10yr old with downsyndrome. 6 woman in my family have been diagnosed with breast cancer and I had cervical cancer and had a partial hysterectomy I was told I did not test positive for any of the genes but should have mri every six months. 2 yes ago I had a double lumpectomy and had a tipiya in the right breast. Now in my left breast the mass has returned double the size. I would like to have a double mastectomy because of history and life style. But I am scared.😢 and have no family close to really talk about this with. How long is the stay.

      That sounds scary! My surgeon said I should be able to leave the same day. Have someone drive you home and take care of you for the first few days. If not, make sure you prepare meals before hand. Best of luck to you

      My double mastectomy and reconstruction was just a one night stay and very easy. You will need help for a while from a spouse or friends especially since you have a child. Have some frozen meals prepared.

      My double mastectomy and reconstruction was easy. Unfortunately they found that I needed chemotherapy and HER2 breast cancer treatment from the larger amount of tissue removed. For me it was lucky that I chose the bilateral mastectomy because HER2 is invasive. The doctor didn’t pressure me in the choice.

    After unilateral mastectomy when can I wear the bra

    • @lillianbarker4292
      @lillianbarker4292 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on what the doctor says. I had a reconstruction with my double mastectomy and was not allowed to wear any bra until all was healed. Then I could wear my normal bra. So the special bras were a waste of money.

      @@markjeffriesjr2448 yes. Breast tissue commonly turns cancerous and can lead to a lot of suffering during menopause. It is actually healthy to loose that tissue.
