Ever wonder how Redwoods get so tall? Look no further.
The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) is the tallest tree species in the world, the largest individual being 379.7 feet (115.7 m) tall. How do these trees reach this enormous height? A clue is given in their name, COASTAL. These giants can only be found in a 450 mile stretch along the California coast, and that is because their existence is strongly tied to the presence of marine fog. Fog slows down water loss for these trees by reducing heat in the summertime, allowing them to grow non-stop. Fog water can either be absorbed straight into the leaf or condense to form droplets and rain down to the soil, benefiting Redwoods and other organisms. In today's video, we explore what other mechanisms are tied to Redwood height and how fog affects not only the trees but the entire ecosystem.

crazy how i just watched a whole science video in my free time.
NERD! :)
Me too
I am also a nerd!
Hey! Just stumbled on your channel after being recommended your bonsai video and I think you have real talent for making these short-form educational videos. I think most of all that your videos have a great sense of progression - each point leads to the next and builds off what was said before. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks so much! I didn't even realize my science videos have progression but you're right! Head's up, the next science one is totally different haha. thanks and take care!
@@TheBackpackingBiologist I stumbled upon you in the same way! via Bonsai vid.
@@YolandaTurner same XD
May your channel grow as big as the tallest coastal redwood and like nobodys business! 🌲✨
Lol me too, thanks Danny!
I LOVED the editing at 7:05. That was SO CREATIVE. I really like how you add the little bubble whenever you mess up the pronunciation of a word haha!!! Very enjoyable video with amazing editing!! I hope to see more of these types of educational videos! I'd love to learn more about the forest!!!
haha thanks! I've slowly phased out the bubbles but I may bring them back, i always like them :).
Beat me to it! What an amazing transition:)
My neighbor’s comment:
“That is one of the clearest and most enjoyable vids I have watched: He’s charming and articulate! Maybe I’ll get to meet him sometime. Thanks for sharing - I gave it a like. 👍👍”
That's very kind of them! Say thank you fo me and thank you for sharing
I just wanna applaud the production quality and how well you explain this. I just love it. You're good
Thanks! I really want to make high quality science videos so I'm glad you like them!
I’m so excited about this!!! I’m a high school science teacher and it’s so hard to keep 9th graders engaged while watching an informational video! Make more! You are awesome!! Again, I’m so excited!
Definitely!!! That’s so cool!
I'm from northern California and I feel reall lucky to have grown up with these trees. I leanred about upwelling when I was taking marine biology but I didn't know it had that much effect on fog and terrestrial ecosystems as a result.
No matter how much I learn about how interconnected everything is, I continue to be astounded by it.
The quality of your videos is extremely high. The explanations are clear and elucidated in such clever ways. The music and sounds really creates an atmosphere that pulls you in to the content.
Thanks so much!
Last time I went camping in big sur my firewood got completely drenched before I could start a fire. I was not expecting that volume of water in the air out of nowhere. So life lesson; always wrap your wood.
seems like you learned the hard way! ;)
I wish you were my biology teacher in school! You have a real talent of explaining in an easy to understand manner and entertaining. I was able to transpiration the information to my brain. Stomata blessings on you!
😂I'm glad you were able to absorb all of that info Jared! Thanks a bunch 🙂
there is something primordially uncanny for me in trees that grow this abnormally large. they are astonishing, and yet absolutely terrifying for reason i cannot put to words.
This was such a refreshing and enjoyable way to learn! Hope to see more in the future
thanks Tito Tata for teaching me something new. I love your videos!😄🌲🌳🌲😃
Anytime Marquis :) never stop learning!
I enjoyed watching your video. Learned a lot of stuff too. More power for more video. Thanks
yo this video was super well made!! great music, editing, sound quality, narration, animations, great nature shots..and super informative!! nice!!
what kind of microphone do you use??
@@TheLocalMangaka I apprciate that! I use the "Rode VideoMic NTG". It's a shotgun mic, super primo.
Yo jonny, that transition with the drone getting wet and you wiping off the camera. brilliant! and i bet you almost lost that drone too ;)
That’s so coooool !!! I love the concept of learning about nature outside where it actually belongs 😍 also the little drawings, the music, the cool metaphors and your lovely voice made it extra enjoyable ;) can’t wait to see more ! Also it made me want to visit California so bad 🙏
Thats so nice of you to say. It's always better to be in the trees if you're gonna talk about em, I always say ;)
The answer is moisture. Did you know the tallest ones grew 4 years worth of height gain in single driest years that had less fog and rain? So fog is one way to get water. So happens, the tallest hemlock and maple known are in those parks also, and also grew extra height during the drought years, although I don't know if those two species grew 4 years worth in a single year.
Best of luck with the channel - smash it! I think it was you who taught me about the Mimosa Pudica leaves in Cambodia...and I have told everyone since!
haha I must have! I always get so excited when I see those plants. I'm glad you're keeping the biology spirit alive and I appreciate your support man!
Awesome video !!!! Loved it
Thank you 🙏 !
You're a professional Ta! Very informative - Adriel and I really enjoyed it :) keep it up, good job!
thank you so much :)
No idea how this video doesn't have millions of views. Production quality is spectacular. Information is wonderful. Well done.
Thank you! I think I gotta somehow make it more clickbaity :(
This content is so damn good! Informative without being overwhelming, relaxing, enjoyable, excellent cinematography. Please keep it up 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me, and I will absolutely keep it up :) take care!
I enjoyed that video clip. Thank you, kabayan. It's very interesting that both the tallest tree in the world, the Redwood, and the biggest tree in the world, the Sequoia are both found in Northern California. Amazing.
It truly is amazing. Thank you so much!
You just dont seem to miss. I’m not you, I cant even describe how you do your videos with all of that awesome thought and effort behind it, but I can say that it feels like a documentary that doesnt just want to give you information about a topic. a documentary without the mundane part.
Thanks so much! This was my first science video and I wanted to make it for years! I'm glad you like it. Cheers!
Awesome video. I always wondered why redwoods were only confined to a limited area.
That’s what I like now I know something new, good job.
Love this soo much 💕💕
You’re doing great!!
Thanks for the support Marsh!
I just found your channel and it was an insta-sub... I loved it. The way you explain things is so clear and easy to understand, and your voice is so pleasant to listen to. Thank you so much for your effort and the lovely watch!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it and hope you like the future content :)
I can't believe you only have 9,000 subscribers. You're so underated
Thank you! I'm on my way up
Well. I’ve developed a new crush.
Also I visited the California coastline this February and I walked among the redwoods and it was a mystical experience. It’s so great to learn the science behind it! Thank you so much for the video!
New crush on trees right 😉. I’m glad you got to experience them up close and personal, they really are something. Thanks for the comment!
DUDE! really well done man. you put a lot of effort and heart into this and we can feel it. Keep'm comin!

You're the best Matt, thanks brother!
@@TheBackpackingBiologist oh also! Great use of animations and that transition from wave splashing on drone to forest was sick. You’re gonna have to tell me on the side how you did that! Lol

That was awesome! I live in the redwoods and I love them. I learned some things I hadn't known before!
Love the redwoods. Used to live in Santa Cruz for college and there were so many
That's so amazing! I went by pure chance through your video about bonzai and now I'm binge-watching all your videos. Smart and super intresting work! You rock man!
The video editing on this and how the information is presented to viewers is *very* well done. Nice job Jonny! Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you Sabrina!
Awesome production effort in this video. I like how you break down the process of water movement through the ecosystem. It’s amazing how much energy is moved around the planet through evapotranspiration, one of the many things that are fun to ponder!
It’s also cool to think about how much of the world works through equalizing a gradient, whether it’s heat transfer through a thermal gradient, wind from a pressure gradient, water movement through a hydraulic gradient, etc. It’s a simple process at its core, but it drives such an intricate matrix of outcomes and interactions: climate, cellular processes, or just water moving through the planet.
It’s a long comment, but I thoroughly enjoyed the effort and wonder you put into this. From a hydrologist to a biologist, I’m inspired man.
I love the way you put it. One of my favorite concepts is diffusion and how it pretty much drives all natural phenomenon! Super cool stuff, I wanna do a video on it in the future :)
@@TheBackpackingBiologist I’ll watch it when you do!
I occasionally talk about hydrology and geology of my area in my videos, but you really go the extra mile and make it the center point of the video instead of just a little mentioned blurb.
I sincerely believe if you learn more about the outdoors and what makes it special in your area, you care about it more. Enough wind out of me, just want to say this video really struck a chord. I may have to do something that focuses on hydrology in my locale now. Hmmmm.
You should definitely add more hydrology to your vids. If you’re knowledgeable of something people would want to know about it!
Incredible, I've learned so much! I can't wait to see more of your videos
Thank you Steph!
im sure you dont need any further encouragement because you seem incredibly passionate about what youre doing... but i want to encourage you anyway! (like many others in the comments) i was shown the bonsai video, was hooked, came to this one, and then was completely enthralled! i then spent probably about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to write a comment that doesnt make me sound like a crazy person
Haha thanks so much, you’re so nice. I can always use some encouragement, so I appreciate it :)
You've got a LaVar Burton meets Bill Nye kinda vibe ... and I love it!!
haha I love that you said that! Thanks!
Reddit brought me here and I just love learning about things in my own back yard. Great video, I have new facts to tell my family randomly 😆. Keep it up!
haha I love it! I'm glad you like the video and thank you for the support!
Dude amazing quality 👍
Thank you man!
This is really great stuff. I'm upset TH-cam hid this channel from me for so long. For shame TH-cam, for shame
🤣 Shame! Thank man, I appreciate it
Wow
Excellent content presented in an easy to understand manner. Very educational. I am growing two young coastal redwoods for Bonsai. Fascinating trees and I would love to someday see the full size version.
Thank you Daniel! Good luck with your redwood bonsai, from what I hear, that species in particular can be pretty tricky to bonsai.
This was such an awesome video. I loved your analogies, they made it so easy to understand the science (and that's coming from someone who works in biology!). Your editing was so nice too, especially the B-roll you shot. I'm subscribing to make sure you keep making more videos!
Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it :)
Amazing. More please.
This is such a well made video! thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
The use of Dude Where's My Car in your science video definitely got you a sub from me! Also loved learning from the way you teach, thank you!
haha that was for a small group of us, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate you!
Another impressive video. Seems like my competition gardening experiments need to include some humidity testing this summer.
Yes! A light misting is always good!
Ur gonna be huge. Not enough channels like this in youtube
I super appreciate that! Thanks
I watched two of your videos just now, super interesting, thanks. Subscribed.
Thanks so much for watching and subbing!
Really appreciate this video. Good stuff!
Thanks!
Great content, mate! You deserve more subs
Thank you! I appreciate that 💪🏾
Very informative video! Now I know that that redwood we own will never be as tall as it would be on the California coast
Thank you! I found a few redwoods down here in LA tucked between some mountains and they don’t look so good, but they’re making it work. NorCal is where they belong!
Great video! Full of really great info!
thanks so much!
so useful i may pass my test because of this
I hope you pass!
the last few minutes reminds me of the biggest little farm I suggest some of you all watch it it's a beautiful film

Thank you, great video. I love the redwoods
Thanks Lorriah! I'm glad you liked the video! I love them redwoods too :). Cheers
I live in a 6b zone and my neighbor has a few sequoia tree on his property. Don’t know how they survived but they have and they are all over 100 ft tall except for one which is about 90 ft tall. It is pretty foggy here.
That’s pretty impressive. Are the giant sequoias or redwoods? Sequoia’s do extremely well in cold temps.
@@TheBackpackingBiologist according to him, they are Sequoias.
This is an excellent educational video!
Thank you so much, education is key!
i really enjoy ur science-communication-style x) .
Thank you so much. This is a very thoughtful comment. I was reluctant to get clickbait’s but I think you’re right, I’m gonna have to dabble
@@TheBackpackingBiologist I mean there are different style of clickbait dont go for the misleading one.. But Blockbuster Type Fonts as u already do. or even red circles and arrows could work. In the end its just more ways to try get ur business going, isnt it? Nothing to feel bad about..

Nice job! 😊 I lived in California for many years and now I realize the fog is a blessing for the trees. Do you have a Patreon link? I know this costs money to produce. Perhaps donate options could also include cryptocurrencies.
Thank you J.C! I actually haven't thought about getting a Patreon just yet. I figured I'd get a following first before I think about it. But subscribing would probably just do for now! thanks again :)

Beautiful trees✨💎
they really are!
hmm there is sometimes dense fog in the uk so I guess that's why people are able to grow them here too.
Interesting, I didn't know folks were growing redwoods in the UK. Thanks for sharing :)

Please explain how water collection from the tree increases upwelling?
Hi Mario! To my knowledge, the process of upwelling is not affected by water collection. Upwelling is a gigantic meteorological event that is driven by wind, temperature and even the rotation of the Earth, so I don't think trees have any effect of it. Could be wrong though, I'll let you know!
@@TheBackpackingBiologist thank you. Iam just trying to figure out that part of the cycle.
