00:00 Intro. We discuss what you'll learn from this video.
0:49 Metal 3d printing. The two main metal 3D printing technologies are discussed: SLM and DMLS. We'll also briefly touch upon binder jetting and metal FDM printing.
1:54 How metal 3D printers work. In this section, the metal 3d printing process is explained in detail.
2:39 How the metal 3d printing process is similar to SLS. Here, we'll discuss how the printing process of metal 3D printing is similar to that of SLS 3D printing.
2:59 Main advantages of metal 3D printing. In this part of the video, we'll explain why and when you could use metal 3D printing for your project. Think of design freedom and materials.
3:52 The major limitations of metal 3D printing. In this part of the video, we'll explain why and when not to use metal 3D printing. Think of costs and post-processing.
4:52 Designing for metal 3D printing. Here, we'll explain why it's the most difficult 3D printing technology to design for and what set of rules you need to follow to ensure accurate and quality parts.
6:58 The latest technology updates. In this final part of the video, some of the new technologies, such as binder jetting and material extrusion, are discussed.
    8:34 Recap of the video.

I'm just waiting for this tech to start becoming more reasonably priced. It's tough to justify buying the complete system needed for printing, debinding, and sintering as someone without a corporate budget. I think this process has the potential to allow designers and entrepreneurs to expand their capabilities greatly.

I think it's already plenty useful, atleast for larger companies, as since they sell so much, paying 1 million per 3d printer for a 20 to 30 percent cost reduction is very viable and can be felt by consumers in the future. Although cheaper printers make it possible for small businesses to take advantage of this as well.

@sillygoose goose I have a 3D printer but casting is only an option for certain materials and provides a whole other set of challenges/problems. The probability of weak spots, air pockets, granular inconsistencies, and all the other pitfalls of casting (especially small scale and small batch) are radically increased compared to 3D printing. Plus, casting from a 3D mold doesn't allow designs to take advantage of the benefits of 3d printing such as the incorporation of flow paths that maximize efficiency that couldn't otherwise be machined without significant effort if it is even feasible.

Hi Newman, we would say metal 3D printing gives you more organic shapes and is faster than investment casting. Plus, fewer startup costs.

A very simple method for 3d printing is investment casting. 3d printing I'm sad to say is a expensive gimmick because so far 3d printing isn't a replacement for conventional methods and really the important technology is 3d scanning

    • @jamalpeoples3736

Investment casting is the easiest it has ever been. Mostly b/c there are sand 3 printers that will make molds or finished products at the foundry.

Hmm, you talk about it as if metal 3D printing is a seperate and single technique (which it is not, it is only a material) and compare it to SLS. Metal can be printen through SLS, DMLS or even FDM so saying it is different than SLS (it is SLS but another material) and it always needs support is wrong because there are many different techniques. Don't confuse a material with a technique.
