Also, just to clarify, Marcille said at the beginning of the episode that well-maintained hair is crucial for conducting mana. That's why Senshi sank the first time they used water-walk, his lack of hair hygiene basically deadened the magic.

So in Laios' defense, extras in the manga DO explain that Fish-Men and Mermaids are seperate things, and that Fish-Men are specifically men-shaped fish, not fish-like men. They birth from eggs, they're indistinguishable from fish until adulthood, and Mermaids actually straight-up hunt and eat them. Mermaids on the other hand are specifically mammals, and are more "demi-human" than Fish-Men are. They're both kind of in this fuzzy area between monster and demi-human, and the distinction isn't super well-defined, but still.

Honestly, the reason the writer does what she does with the kelpie is pretty simple. She’s pointing out to us “Why is eating THIS monster so different from eating a different monster?”
Laios himself asks “Why do people think it’s fine to kill bugs and plants and stuff, but we’re so particular about mammals (or things we perceive to be mammals)?” And why is eating a kelpie any different from eating a cow or a pig? Where do we draw the lines?
And chilchuck answers that it really IS more about feelings than any kind of logic or reason. The logical thing to do is to use all available resources. The emotional response is “that thing looks too much like me for me to be comfortable eating it”

I agree with you but the line for "why is it any different from eating a cow or a pig?" is for a more humanoid creature, the fishman, I can def see having more trouble eating say an ape over a cow because it's more human looking even if lets say the ape was a mermaid and not a mammal. I'd personally be in Laios camp though, you try to eat me, I eat you.
I like that he uses two arguments in this episode and contradicts them, Oh lets eat mammals doesn't matter if there cute, oh lets eat fishmen because they aren't mammals, I get his justification it's just funny to me.

Kelpies in Scottish and Irish mythology are shapeshifters that resemble horses and that have a taste for human flesh. When you're on their back, you can't get off and they will drown you and devour you underwater. If Senshi hadn't gotten on Anne's back she wouldn't have attacked him.

The way I understood it was that Marcille's magic didn't work on Senshi because his beard was basically resistant to it since there were all sorts of nasty fluids mixed into it throughout the years and probably decades of different monster encounters that it got so impure that the magic couldn't get through it.
And they prepared the parasitic worm instead of the Kraken because Senshi wasn't exactly sure where to get the tasty parts from it and when he considered taking the meat from somewhere else, the worm came out instead.
And my theory is that the other group is quicker at moving through this dungeon because they have food supplies. They don't have to hunt down and prepare monsters, they can move around every monster that doesn't block their path if they can allow it, making it easier for them to get further into the dungeon, while Laios's party has to find monsters, kill and prepare them, which additionally slows them down.

Marcille says at the beginning of the episode that hair is a conductor of magic, that is why Senshi's dirty beard blocked the spell, it is not because of the "impurity" of the monsters, since they are created by magic, that is why Marcille was able to enchant to the kraken.

Kelpies are from Scottish/Irish folklore. They are shape-shifting monsters that appears as beautiful horses, who seem friendly and inviting to ride on them. Once a human rides on them, they can't dismount as their fur and hide are sticky (maybe by magic?), they then take their victims into water to drown them and eat them.
I said magic because that would explain why Senshi was able to dismount in the water and also Laios was not stuck to it once it was dead, so it should be an active skill, at least in this representation.
Btw, I said Scottish/Irish as I found references to it in both folk literature. Kelpies are new to me so I'm not sure which would be the actual origin.

Kelpies are predators. Most predators dont attack unless they have the advantage in a situation. In the water they the advantage and you have nowhere to run from them. Anne did as her instincts demanded, and she waited until Senshi got on her back to make her move. It's an unfortunate but important lesson to learn. 😢

About the format thing, this episode is different because it was from 3 chapters in the manga with some minor moments with kabru’s party cut out.

To Japanese people who love fish and horse meat, Kelpies might seem like the ultimate delicacy.

Japanese people don't really love horse meat. The original reason they called it sakura niku (sakura meat) was to hide what it was. Today it's considered a special delicacy for culinary adventurers, same as tanuki nabe (racoon dog hotpot) or bear stew. They're actually very rare.

    • @crominokgr
      @crominokgr 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sure, it's rare, but I'm not sure "dislike" or "exotic delicacy" are the right words. From what I've seen, horse meat sashimi is pretty common in mid-range Izakayas, and many people enjoy it because it's not too peculiar taste.

there's people irl that just randomly approach wild animals and end up getting killed, you'd think this would happen more with animals like bears or lions or something but it's actually way more common for people to try to befriend large hooved herbivores, horses, deer, bison, bulls, and moose are no fucking joke, they're more deadly than large carnivores simply because of people's stupidity and blind trust, kelpies are obviously not herbivores but Senshi, Marcille, and the audience associated Anne with horses so we assigned a passive personality to her because we like to think of herbivorous creatures like horses as being friendlier than carnivores, but she's a wild animal that needs to eat and kelpies hunt by tricking people into getting on their backs, this is a lesson about how respecting nature isn't just about not destroying the environment, but also about not treating every animal like a housepet, kelpies aren't evil, they're just mid-sized carnivores that engage in offensive mimicry, Laios was right and Senshi should've listened to him (not shitting on Senshi, this is a very believable flaw for him to have but it was still stupid)

So, as I understand it, the kraken had gotten too big for this environment to sustain it any longer. It was already staring to decimate the population of mid-sized predators so much that it was noticeable, even to people just passing through - and _that,_ in turn, was leading to an overpopulation of small creatures, that would usually be kept in check by the mid-sized ones. If the party hadn't slain the kraken, it would have slowly starved, while causing a near-extinction of fish-men, mermaid, etc. The ecosystem would _eventually_ have righted itself, after its death, but it would have taken a lot longer.

@@AnimeCriticalif fully cooked (as in cook at/past 165 degrees) you could. But mentally it’s not worth eating and time wise to prep it would be a nightmare with how small/flimsy they are.
Bugs like crickets ppl do eat if cook and serve in abundance, but if only a handful that’s a waste of time to gather, prep and consume little.
