Too old to travel at your young ages ?
I'm now 88 and still like to travel. This year across the Atlantic, on my own, for a relative's birthday.
I can still sail my own small boat, live alone now, and do most of my own household chores.
Don't give up so soon. There's plenty to do when your older.

Everyone is different. My wife and I are in our 70's, own a small business and love to work. We have 8 children who all encourage us to sell our business and spend more time with them, but just like you like to travel, we like our business and the people we work with and meet there. Once or twice a year we take a vacation and, for us, that's really all the travel we want to do. By the 2nd week of a vacation we can't wait to get back to work. Doesn't make us right or wrong, doesn't take away from your wonderful experiences, we're just all different. I hope you continue to enjoy many more years of what is obviously making you very happy at this time in your life.

I am 75 and my husband is 86. We were still planning to travel a lot because we were in good health and fit. Then five days into our 14-day Greenland cruise last month I had a stroke. Fortunately, I wasn't affected too much, but now I am afraid to go too far away. Enjoy your youth.

were both in good health, until my wife needed heart surgery, on a cruise in Jamaica. in

We are clearing out our “stuff” currently as we prepare to set off on full time travelling in April next year, it actually feels great to rid ourselves of the things we really don’t need or want. We’re able to keep some things in the house as our youngest son and his wife will be moving into our home while we travel. We will also be coming home every 6 months for 3-3 weeks to see family, friends and doctors and specialists visits. We’ve roughed out the first 3 years of itinerary and can’t wait to get out and explore this wonderful world.

I've been "slow traveling" in retirement for about a year with all my possessions in two suitcases, and I couldn't be happier. UK for 4 months, Italy for 3 months, then Buenos Aires, then Seville... I really like being able to see these cities at a relaxed pace, living in each like a local. I'll pass on the frenzied "see it in a week" approach.

You two are such an inspiration! My wife and I never had kids and we're approaching our 35th anniversary. We're 53 and 54 and saved all these years to do something like you two are experiencing. I did 27 years in the USAF and we did quite a bit of traveling in Europe and Japan when stationed in those geographical locations to the "popular" places. We now want to go and see those remote, off the beaten path places you have mentioned in your travels. Thing is, both of us can't seem to get past giving up our home base, to come back to and get some dwell time. Without kids or close enough with friends/neighbors to leave our home with, we'll probably sell most of the stuff we have and just lock it up and do a month out traveling and a month back dwell time. We've had no debt for 20 years now, and can afford approx. $5-6K month in travel expenses with our nest egg awaiting us when we get too old. If you had a "Top 5" of travel locations that you could say you'd definitely spend a month at with plenty of things to do 3-4 days per week, what would you say that those 5 would be? Thank You again and look forward to hearing from you on what those Top 5 would be! Chad & Kristi Parks

Thanks so much. So glad you are enjoying our channel and we look forward to hearing about your travel adventures. You know your question is nearly impossible because there are so many places. We'll concentrate on some that we liked during the past couple years that aren't too touristy, places you have been, affordable and fun. You can check out our blogs and vlogs
      1. We loved our time in Lake Atitlan and Antigua, Guatemala. Lake Atitlan is remote, but so cool. You can visit the various small towns around the lake by boat and just chill.
      2. Less crowded Greek isles (Crete was great, Folegandros (near Santorini), Paros, etc
      3. Balkans (We spent 3 months in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia, and Croatia. Very low cost, few tourists, great food and we had an amazing time. We could design you some fun trips depending on what you like.
      4. Southeast Asia sampler; Some great experiences in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. Our Mekong River cruise to Luang Prebang, Laos. We loved New Year in Siem Reap, Snorkeling in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Again, depends on what you want, but lots of low cost, interesting options in SE Asia.
      5. A higher cost, but still GREAT trip is the South Island of New Zealand. Such beautiful scenery, safe, nice people, hiking, etc
Hope this helps. If you want more specifics, send us a note to our email on our website.

Yes we are slowing down no more mountain walking but we still walk just not up mountains, we also do more cruising rather than climbing up mountains, last year we walked the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. Finland requires people to place liquids in their small bags so no need to go through and put your liquids in a clear bag. The thing is, we are not in the States anymore "when in Rome..." I am living proof that we don't need shampoos, conditioners, perfumes, etc. My skin is healthier just using what is 1 ingredient because of all those products have a ton of ingredients and chemicals and honestly humans did live without them before their invention so my motto is "keep travels simple". We use baking soda for cleaning ourselves, dishes and clothes (it is order eliminating) and we can find it everywhere so there is no need to travel with it. I use specific essential oils, too, with coconut oil, which is great for the skin. Essential oils are small, clean ingredients, last longer than anything else, etc. Honey is what I use for my face and body when I shower! I mix some essential oils, honey, coconut oil, and water as my shampoo and conditioner and honey are found everywhere, so we don't have to travel with it if we fly. A mix of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and water cleans our teeth and keeps them white, too. The HP lasts a long time bc I use only a few drops for our toothpaste solution. We are extreme minimalist as you can read and our goal in life is to not be attached to stuff so that it doesn't own any part of our life...the goal is to be owners of our stuff and let it go...it is very freeing; however, extremely difficult and challenging. We started with 5 pieces of travel luggage, and we are down to 1 backpack each, my purse, and a bag to carry food as needed! Yes, it is crazy to think that is all we own (key words) because if we had to leave it all behind down to the bare necessities I think we could....and if we are going to continue this full time travel it is the only way to enjoy it, IMO. Learning along the way! Thanks for keeping it real, and we wish safe travels!!!! 😊

My parents were very involved with my kids and I want to do the same, yet downsize and travel as much as possible. Because my parents lived down the street from my kids, they were all extremely close. I've had guilt about how to do the things I want to do, but still be a good support to my grown children, Mom and any grandchildren I eventually have. You gave some great insight where this is concerned. I will be doing it differently than my parents did, but my desire is that I will still be very close to my 3 grown children and their children. We are 60 years old and realize we won't be able to keep this pace up forever. That is exactly why we have prioritized things for faster, more intense travel in our earliest years of retirement. We also try to keep ourselves as fit and healthy as possible to extend the time out.
Safe travels and many blessings to you,

Very interesting to hear your thoughts for the coming years. Thank you for sharing. Definitely a great idea to do as much as you can early in your retirement and slow down in later years. Every time I visit a place I always think...Is this someplace I could live longer-term?...because at some point I think having a few "home bases" around the world to move between a few months at a time would be ideal for me. Being a "flexpat" as you say (great term, by the way!). Agree with renting a smaller place if I needed to end my nomad life and return to the US. I'm not sure I want to buy a place again, and I know I never want a big home ever again! Becoming a minimalist was liberating. Loving this nomad lifestyle more and more every day!

We are 70 and 75 and have been full-time travelers for 3 years now. We are still working on the long list of places we developed over the years. Barring a black swan (our personal health or the production of a grandchild!) event, we expect to travel at our current pace for the next few years. Our exit plan will be an apartment in the small Washington State town we have grown to love. We don’t expect to ever own any property. We have friends here (and a small storage shed) along with our doctors and dentist.
We would still travel as much as we could (we like cruising and it very disability-friendly!). We curated our belongings with an eye to the things we would like to be surrounded by in our 80s. And we would dearly love to have a dog again. So, that’s the plan. Until it isn’t and we make a new one. Live your life. Live your life.

Love your videos and your take on life. My husband and I have been traveling for 2 months thru Greece and Albania, and even though it has been beautiful… we can’t wait to go back home. We miss our bed, we miss our bathroom we miss our coffee maker ☕️ maybe it’s because we’ve been staying at very budget studios … and we never quite know how the rooms will be…. ? You may have mentioned that you use your credit card miles to stay in good lodging. Maybe that’s what makes the difference. Also, we are tired of rude locals… as they are tired of the thousands of tourists (like me). Maybe we need to choose our locations better as is seems that everywhere we go is swarmed with crowds. We’ve been in a few remote places… but then logistics (such as getting around and meals) are difficult to figure out.
For now (I’m 62) I think I’m done traveling abroad and will stick to the US, Canada and maybe cruises.
And of course watch your adventures from the comfort of my couch 🛋️ 😊 Happy Travels

very optimistic approach Guys! Good for you! But in reality (I work with lots of ageing people) Late 60ties or early 70 ties health is declinig... sometimes rapidly. You cannot judge from situation when you are healthy 60 y.o. It will not last. Majority (like 99% of 70 y. o don't even think about long time travel, not because they dont want to, it is just not possible when you start have old age health issues: i am not telling about something drastic like cancer, just a regular stuff: arthritis, HTN, diabetes, heart issues and such. Thise golden years of retirement usually last maximum 10 years if you are really healthy. When you are 70, or earlier smt you have to think about feasible back up plan: place to live, help to get in case if you need it, approach to GP you trust.
my clients, who were thriving 60 y. o independent, travelling huge deal, when they are in their 70 ties, though quite independent still they dont want to travel that much ( having permanent residence) thay want to move closer to kids and rely on their help if needed. So, will talk to you in 5 years 🙂 Stay healthy!

These videos are SO very helpful! I am so inspired to begin this process for my husband and I. Please continue to share your journey and perhaps narrow the topic to one idea per video - example: What is the average cost of staying in hotels and traveling for periods of 3 to 6 months at a time. How much money is a good idea to leave behind in preparation for more advanced senior needs such as assisted living? What about traveling outside the U.S. with some health concerns?

Very refreshing discussion and thank you for sharing. As liveaboard sailors we are planning 1-2 yrs, 3-5 yrs out, and beyond. We also think about where we will live when we decide to come home. Travelling and meeting other people definitely brings fresh ideas and stirs creativity. Staying home because you have a house never gets you out of your comfort zone. Also travelling continually keeps you stimulated and active. We encourage people to try a few months of non-traditional travel to see if they like it. Travelling for a few weeks is just not the same experience as travelling for months.

Salaamualaikum from South Africa. I greet you with the universal greeting of peace
My husband and I left the country in the 1980s in the dark days of apartheid. Him being an attorney found it impossible to practice within the unjust system. We set out our belongings in my parents home which really improved the aesthetics of their home.
We set out and lived in various countries -having a working holiday. Mauritius for about a year and a half, Geneva for 3year, India for 3months and London for approximately a year.
When we returned to South Africa,we did a similar stint in Cape town, Johannesburg etc. We also visited Saudi Arabia many many times. When my children settled at schools, the working holidays decreased
I'm very content with spending time with my adult children, family and friends and have no desire for travel and leaving my comfort zone. Thank God I did it in younger days

Another great video, Bev and John! I am really inspired and impressed with your family values. Your grandchildren are going to learn so much about life from you, especially the importance of kindness and compassion that you share with everyone. Also, they will learn the idea that experiences and relationships are more important than things, their latest electronic gadget, favorite celebrity or sports team. Keep up the great videos and web content and thank you for inspiring us and sharing the world with us through your wonderful experiences.

This is all very well and good, but know yourself before making the leap. As a homebody, I can only travel 3 weeks at a time before I want to go home. That’s not a glamorous admission but it's honest.

Coming from a guy who was able to retire relatively early, I found this video to be great inspiration. 👍🏼
My goal has been to get rid of stuff and downsize (which I know if difficult for a number of reasons). But my wife has a SUPER difficult time getting rid of anything. I am working on that issue, but it has slowed the minimization process down tremendously. It is nice to see you two pulling together! ❤ I will share this video with my wife 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼😃.

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks and good luck to both of you. Getting rid of everything is tough to get started, but so definitely worth it. It is also helpful if you do it for a bigger reason, like wanting to go see the world. It was the key enabler for us.

When I first started traveling almost full-time. I sold my home and most of the furnishings. Everything else went into storage except what I traveled with. Coming home after a little over a year, I rented a fully furnished condo. I thought about what I really missed that was in storage and the rest of it, I got rid of. After next set of travels, I did that again and it is surprising how easy it was to get rid of much, much more. If you don't use it or think about it for a year or so and it isn't a personal keepsake, it is easy to get rid of stuff. This worked for me. Now, I don't even like to buy stuff since it seems like a stone in my shoe as I continue to travel. Good luck!!! Life is fun, make it simple!!
