Dorman 902-438 part number for the win! Thank you so much for your level of detail. It’s exactly what I needed as I dive into the back seat passenger-side of my 2003 Suby.
Thanks for the part number, I found my cap and gasket # 902-438 was the problem, use a little lub the cap goes on easyer, O'Reilly has it in stock, AutoZone and advanced didn't have it if this help.
to all of you who may have the same issue - cracked cap - be forewarned that your local Dorman dealer (NAPA, Carquest, Autozone)will charge you about $60 for a "repair kit"and you may receive a cap (as I did) that is a POS made in China that has all the tabs unfinished (compare to your damaged cap) and which has an inside diameter at least 1,000th of an inch SMALLER than the original, making it all but impossible to attach and lock onto/over the original round plastic fuel chamber. My local CQ owner looked at the part and immediately ordered another, hoping it will be made better. If not, he sez, they will order from Subaru. I dont think Subaru has these - anywhere...So if you have a gas welder, its your best shot to just reweld the old cap and pick up an O ring that fits or reuse the old one if possible. Most of the Chinese garbage can be dealt with. But when the tolerances are so tight as on this piece, you'd think they would make sure the cap would at least FIT. But they know we will keep buying this crap because it's not made anywhere (else) that cares about quality control.
thank you. my 2001 wouldn't start. that cap looked just like yours. replaced it and it worked perfectly! i wouldn't have looked for that if i didn't see this video.
It was the cap doing this as well at least it's known that does make me feel better still serving today with this video thank you
Today I'm doing the cap I never opened the fuel pump I think with your video I may return it
Wow! Thanks for sharing the extra finds. A lot of us wouldn't know to look for that cap problem. I was definitely uninformed prior to this!
