Dennis was so, so underrated. The proof is right here.

I don’t know if it’s so much that he was ‘underrated’. More like misunderstood. While the music media were fawning all over Brian as being the genius (which he rightfully deserved), and Carl as being the quiet, cute one with the voice of an angel (which he definitely did have)… Dennis got slapped with the unfortunate “good looking but dumb and talentless one who actually surfs and races cars” image. Sadly, much of the public bought into that. Anyone who’s not just a casual fan or sideline observer knows that this was a fallacy, and knows just how much of a soulful, creative force Dennis actually was.

Oh hell yeah. Also has a better version of "You are so beautiful" One of the most underrated musician ever. He was dubbed the good looking surfer guy whom got all the ladies. More needs to be told about Denny's beautiful song writing and passion when he sings. He was more than just the good looking one. His talent shines through when people get over the other talented Wilson's. Love you Dennis. Rest in Paradise my brother

Dennis pulled this and "4th Of July" from "Surf's Up", so contemporary listeners never got to hear those songs. He wanted this song to follow "'Til I Die" to close out the album.

It's good for sure but was left off purposely (didn't work amidst masterpieces). Not even among his best, which proves how great dw could be in terms of songwriting.

This song really is worthy of the term “masterpiece”. I could easily imagine this closing out side 2 of “Surf’s Up”.

@@cazgerald9471When the “Feel Flows” set came out, I reassembled the Surf’s Up album (in a separate playlist) with this closing out the album, and the result was nothing short of an emotional juggernaut. Works beautifully. It’s a damn shame that wasn’t the way the album was sequenced when it came out in ‘71. Apparently certain band members let their jealousy overcome their judgement, and that was why Dennis decided to pull it.

This reaches a pinnacle his vocal just builds the feeling of the pain and regret, then hope in the belief of a brighter future as one comes to terms with a love lost.
It would appear that someone realised they made a mistake one pushing things too far in a relationship.
Another was not letting the world hear this a lot earlier.
For me it is one of those songs heightens the senses and feelings to place where I enjoy music the best

    My two pennies:
This song is a goddamn masterpiece. Dennis really was an overlooked creative force in the Beach Boys. From what I’ve heard, and let me preface this by being clear that I don’t know if it’s 100% true or not, this song was originally intended to close out side 2 of the “Surf’s Up” album (instead of the song ‘Surf’s Up’), and even though I absolutely love the way that album ends with the 1-2-3 punch of “A Day in the Life of a Tree”, “Til I Die”, and “Surf’s Up”, I’ve put together a playlist with this in place of Surf’s Up and listened to it with that progression, and I’m not going to go so far as to say that I think it’s ‘better’, but at the very least, I’d say with absolute certainty that it’s _just as_ good.
According to what I’ve been told, the reason this was pulled from the album (along with the song “4th of July”) was because of ‘certain band members’ complaining that there had already been too many Wilson brother compositions on Sunflower. Is all this gospel truth? Who knows, other than the members of the Beach Boys themselves and those who were part of their inner circle at the time. All I know is that it’s a damn shame this brilliant song didn’t make it on to the album in some manner. The fact that it remained unreleased for several decades is just bizarre.

I’ve always thought that Student Demonstration Time just didn’t fit on that album. I always skip over it when I listen to Surf’s Up. However this one would have been absolutely perfect for the overall feel of that album. Plus, from what I understand it was originally supposed to be included on the album as the closer at the end of side two, but a certain band member whose name I won’t mention threw a fit that there were already too many songs on the album with someone named Wilson singing lead, so Dennis decided to keep it for himself to be used on a solo album that never materialized. The song “4th of July” was also originally supposed to be on the album.

The truth is that nothing this good is promoted to fame today but some can and do sing ot compose this good in obscurity, with basically no support. The music industry and broader culture and especially elite culture sadly no longer support such quality and heartfelt work within popular music, especially not from stars from such modest and troubled backgrounds as the Wilson Brothers. Even fewer today can sing like this but relatively few could ever actually. Now those that do have basically no support to grow their talents to a broader audience.

You have to wonder if Dennis would have lived longer and ultimately cleaned up like Brian did -- IF -- the "Sunflower" album had been the big seller it should have been. Dennis contributed 3 knockout tracks to that great, team-effort LP, and then when it sank quickly he was largely a non-factor on the following LP, "Surf's Up," which did much better, sales-wise. Sunflower and Pet Sounds -- proof that greatness doesn't always translate to commercial success.

The superiority of Dennis' songwriting is undeniable here. The group should have accepted him as the main songwriter after Brian, with Carl and Al contributing, and put out more early '70s albums packed with Dennis' songs. Alot of the comments on this page mention not being able to hold back tears when hearing this. I don't know if there's a higher compliment than that to pay to a songwriter, singer, musican. (That must be Charles Lloyd ("Feel Flows") on flute in the end part.)

Dennis was the only true Surfer Boy in the Band. He was the guy the girls all screamed for. He had the world by the b-lls and in the end he couldn't get out of his own way. His addictions and his excesses killed him at such a young age. Unfortunately he could not get the help that he needed. By the end his voice was completely shot and the band had to replace him. It should never have ended like that.
