My heart breaks watching this video. Karen is so painfully thin! How she had the energy to perform is beyond comprehension. Very sad that she is not with us , but we are grateful for what she left us. Her beautiful voice and her exceptional talent. ❤️
This is so awesome! Love the Carpenters, Karen is excellent with Richard, this song is right with the 80's.. Wish she was still here.. God Bless Her.. The music we could've had..
A beautiful, silky voice (as always!). It's also stunning to see how ill she was at that point, but she could still put up a cheerful front like no one else. If only people had recognized it sooner. 😢
This is Wonderful.. Karen's speaking voice is just as Beautiful and Magical.as her singing voice! I also love to listen to Olivia Newton-John speak with that Australian accent. Remembering the Merv Griffin show... somedays I wish it wasn't just a memory! Thank you for sharing! 💖
God, Karen looked so thin and ill in this performance on "The Merv Griffen Show"! So terribly sad that she essentially destroyed herself! What a sad, sad loss for her fans and the world!
Great hearing Karen talk extensively in this interview! I always thought her somewhat carefree jovial personality stood in contrast to many of her beautiful yet darkish often somber songs...So I therefore wonder if the songs were just a “performance,” or if there were multiple sides to her personality, or if Richard was behind all the dark serious music...?
no one is all sad or all cavalier all the time. Her songs represented the many different sides of her personality. I don't think people get that the world isn't black and white.
Her brother chose all their songs!! If you look at the one song we know she chose ‘sweet sweet smile’ or her solo album you can see all the songs are far more upbeat
Yes, Karen was a brilliant "performer" and she could bring to life and own any song/lyric. She shined on any song but her performance of somber songs was simply spectacular and Richard realized that, but then so did we all and that's what we wanted to hear from them and Richard knew that's what sold, but he also knew he couldn't make a career out of doing exclusively somber material and needed to force a balance. Karen was not a somber person, at least not the Karen we all knew. On the contrary, she was a happy. fun loving person that loved to have fun playing drums, play softball, joke around, chat with fans in the grocery store, and perform on stage. Of course her somber songs were a performance. What, you thought somehow all those somber sentiments from John Bettis, Carole King, Paul Williams, Leon Russel, McCartney/Lennon, Henry Mancini's daughter, etc, magically applied to Karen's life?
What's wrong with a 1981 song sounding like the 80s???? What did you want it to sound like, Pearl Jam? Well, I love the production, even if it is slightly weak, too much one note. Richard correctly recognized the need to modernize, jazz up, and bring something new to their sound. Following the synth trend of the 70s, with a successful path in pop music blazed by Daryl Dragon, Richard got Daryl to help him with this track. I'd say that Richard's timing was good given that the first half of the 80s was dominated by synth pop, and Richard was a little ahead of that trend given that "Made in America" was probably gestated in 1979, although Daryl was the leader in this respect. Greg Hawkes of "The Cars" would be the acknowledged master of 80s style synth-pop and the father of that craze, with Daryl being the grandfather. Anyway, show me some popular music from 40 years ago that doesn't sound dated, and I'll show you music that only uses instruments and techniques hundreds of years old. If you think this sounds dated, then you hate all music from the first half of the 80s, that's not Richard's fault, it's yours. All that said, Richard agrees with you. He regrets using synth on any track.
@@TheLarryBrown There are plenty of records from the 80s that aren't dated production wise. They weren't top 40 bands. Know your subject before you come at someone with your pontifications. Richard agrees with me .Enough said.
Love the Carpenters but not the greatest song…she was very ill by this point obviously but you really see how down to earth and delightful she was during the interview.
Great dance song. I remember it played as line dance music at Country and Western Clubs in the early 1980s, which John Travolta made popular with the movie Urban Cowboy.
Educated observation, thank you for not "trashing the times" ! Karen and Richard were first and foremost, great musicians who understood all genres of music. Music was just getting electronic in nature and , like it or not it became the precursor to what we have today.
All here is just my humble opinion..Karen is Looking rather skeletal here 🙄😭. Death came two years later .. So beyond tragic.. Saw her live in Saratoga in 1973.. They were incredible..magical live..✨🌟🌟✨ ..At least Richard healed from his addiction.👍👍🙏🍀. ..May she Rest In Sweet Peace.🙏🕯️🌟🌹🌹🌹💐😔😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️🙄🙁🦋💨.
@@steveking2211 I can never tell when stuff is lip-synched, I must have some kind of disability bc I always have to be told when stuff is photoshopped or fake sung. I hate fake stuff.
@@nadiamccall4311 no problem Nadia. Back in first few years they started they were criticized for sounding almost exactly like their albums when they sang live. It was just Karen was so talented she could sing just like she was in the recording booth which 99% of singers can’t do. But this time you can tell the song is 100% exactly like the record so it’s lip-synced.
@@steveking2211 Fil on the "Wings of Pegasus" channel does an analysis of the "Close to You" recording and a live performance. The "live"was more in tune than the recording!
It's easy to speculate, but when your around someone everyday, you don't notice the true reality! They say tv adds on 20 pounds on screen, image being there with karen in person, she would be like hugging a fragile lamp shape, her frame would crumble from the pressure! What a horrible disorder to have! They all tried to get her help, but when your in dinable, like an alcoholic or a druggy, all you can do is stand back and what the train wreck unfold!
You all should check her goodmorning america interview in 1980, it's karen at her worst! I know why her brother or her management team let her air that day!
She really tried. So did Karen’s friends Frida and Karen (different Karen) but it never took, and what did work a little came too late for Karen’s heart, which she had stretched beyond its limits.
Olivia, now you are with your friend, singing together 😢. Thank you for everything! You are so greatly missed and loved
Karen and Olivia - two beautiful angels and best friends reunited forever ❤
I MISS KAREN CARPENTER SO MUCH.
Me too :( 2022

Looks like pure adrenaline.
She would have been in pain and needed rest, hopefully she tried she deserved rest. More than she thought or imagined 😢❤

She's not in this Earth anymore when I hear her angelic voice that makes me love her, but... I really miss her badly :((

Very nice of you to upload this haven't seen it in a while.
I noticed there were clips of it on here, but not in it's entirety and only in a poorer quality video.

She's amazing and to think that the camera puts possibly up to 10 lbs on person it's hard to imagine how thin she really was......
I can't even imagine the shock of seeing her in person 😢
I miss Karen too.😢
this was a good song
❤️
Rest in Peace Karen Carpenter
The wonderfully talented Karen and Richard Carpenter, and Olivia Newton John. Interesting to see John Travolta too.

Can you please post these two episodes of the show: May 21 1980, Jan 9 1970?? Please!!🙏 It's very important!
Please, mister post man. 😅
Such an amazing voice... RIP Karen😢

Dastardly XK120 ... 🌹
She was sporting Barbra Streisand's hairstyle and color in "A Star is Born."
Frizzy due to her illness.
She looks like actress Kate Jackson n Adrienne Barbeau put together thin.
I hear the synth pop influence, christopher cross, minute by minute doobie brothers , sax slow jazz, bee gees falsetto harmonies....syncopated beats

Yes it’s lip-synched. They were great live but sometimes the tv show wanted the artist to lip-synched for various reasons.
