    I still forget that the legend was built in 2000. Easily one of the best years for roller coasters, Millenium force, the legend, Boulder dash, dominator, lightning racer, speed the ride, son of beast, villain, xpress platform 13, and Robin Hood are just the coasters off the top of my head

      Goliath, SD2000, SROS SFNE to add just off the top of my head. There never was a more exciting time!

      It was an incredible time to be involved in this hobby. There was just so many things being announced that it was near impossible to go and ride everything that was new that year and even a couple years after.

    Still my favorite wooden coaster. I have one of the Gerstlauer lap bars from when the park offered them for a charity donation. What a great era for many of us to have discovered this gem of a park - many great memories of the Stark Raven Mad (later Holiwood Nights) events too.

    That must have been an amazing week, going from Six Flags Ohio's media day to the Legend's the very next day.

      I got home from the SFO media day around 9PM ( I think) and then I hopped in a car and slept all the way to HW as we had to be there super early in the morning. It was quite a fun couple of days for certain.

    I never understood why they would order such a big coaster and get a single g train for it. Thankfully they ordered a pair of PTC trains to replace it a few years later.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Back when this coaster debuted, the park didn't have the attendance to warrant two trains. That changed very quickly. The park wasn't a big fan of the Gerstlauer train and decided to modify the station as well as build a transfer track for those PTC trains.

  • @mhtube01
    @mhtube01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this coaster was brand new back then so it probably hadn't "run in" yet, and camera quality was not nearly what it is today, but wow it goes much noticeably faster today with the PTC trains! Or at least maintains it's speed longer.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were sometimes, during ERT in the evening, when the Gerstlauer trains were flying, providing a much more peppy ride than even with the PTCs. While the PTCs are, in my opinion, definitely more comfortable to ride in compared to the older trains, they don't see to track as well. Also, parts of the layout were lowered and altered to provide more speed in the layout once the PTCs were added.

    Crazy to see it without all the waterslides. My first visit to the park was probably ~2005. Also I’m curious where you like to ride Legend. I prefer towards the back on the left for maximum forces on that amazing spiral drop turn around out by the water park. And the corners of death at the end are a bit more bearable for me if I’m not being jammed up into them in the front of the train.

    • @SeanFlaharty

      I guess I don't have a preference of where to sit, or at least never thought about it. Lol. I tend to not sit over the wheels. I think I rode many times in the middle seats this year while at HWN and had great rides!

      @@KentuckianaCoasters I think I may premier the next vlog tomorrow afternoon. I just finished editing it yesterday. Today is the first day I have been back on TH-cam in over a month. I got pretty sick (thanks COVID) and this has been the first week I have felt strong. It took a few weeks to regain my strength back. Feeling great now. This is actually the first time I mentioned getting sick on TH-cam. I found out very quickly that telling more people I was sick resulted in more and more people wanting me to talk about it. When I was sick it was really hard to speak or even type so I only told a handful I had the virus. I am glad I am better but I am going to do everything I can to be even safer. I thought I was being overly cautious this year but it still got me. I don't want to give myself any chance of catching this again in the future.

    Kind of an unrelated question, but I couldn’t find any information about this. Is the Intamin giant drop at Tokyo dome city still in operation? I’ve looked every where to get info about it, but couldn’t find anything. I thought I would ask you, because I know you have recently been to japan.

      Actually, it only had one Gerstlauer train. The park modified the lap bars after opening year to help with the uncomfortable laterals the sides of the lap bars produced. I have one of the modified lap bars sitting in my house right now.

    I found a video where you and a friend rode Goliath at SFMM

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha ha. That was my first ever play-by-play for a cable show. I had no idea I was even going to be on the show. We flew into LA the night before and arrived at SFMM for what we were told was to be extras for a video shoot on Goliath. We sat in the back row to start the shoot but once the producers found out I came from Ohio to ride the coaster, they changed the whole direction of the shoot and asked myself, as well as Scott Short, if we would mind being in the camera car. We were a bit confused but we agreed. Not only did they record our ride but they followed us around most of the day for interviews and stuff. That show ended up providing me with many other opportunities to do more play-by-plays for other parks, and eventually led me to the public relations director position for ACE for a couple of years. I have those shows up on my channel somewhere.

      It really was the debut of another world class coaster. I know a lot of people didn't like the Gerstlauer train but I thought it actually tracked better than the PTC trains do.

  • @erichoss4218

    Sure was easy to just bring a camera on a roller coaster back then. How times have changed!

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is way different. I remember being able to take my huge camera and accompanying VHS recording deck with easy back in the day. Then when I switched to 8mm and Hi8 it as still easy. Once cameras started getting smaller and smaller, a lot of the parks started allowing cameras on rides. People that have no regards to safety really put a stop to that by not holding onto their cameras properly and causing them to fly out and hit other riders. I do applaud parks that allow GoPro cameras on their rides as long as they are attached to a rider securely. I spent a little time at Sea World in Texas a few days ago and was able to record POV on each coaster without any issue at all.
