That twangy yet incredibly soulful funk Jerry had on these early 70’s Mr. Charlie’s are unreal. So DIRTY!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I'd say he was ahead of his time...but then I remember Jerry was the original!
That’s ole pigpen singing. Anther original that was gone to soon.
@@chriswhitley3283 I know, I was talking about Jerry's twanging guitar solo!
Jerry and Bob were sharing a double-cut Les Paul Special at those December 1971 shows. The P-90 pickups on those vintage Gibson guitars have such a ridiculous tone!
70s dead is straight heroin..
Love hearing Bobby and Jerry harmonies behind Pig Pen.
Pigpen was the man.
Sure was
Is the man!!! 😉✊🕉
Bad ass 😎
One of a kind 💀
Yea indeed, even after 59 years
It's crazy how one front Man made the grateful Dead sound completely different. It was a whole different entity. But it was cool watching them evolve as well. My favorite band in the world I listen to them all day everyday and never get tired. Name another ensemble that you could listen to all day every day and never get tired.
I hope you're enjoying the Thunderbird wine and Southern Comfort up there Pig. RIP
One of Keith's first shows and he was on fire!
YES!
Bar band Dead with Keith on piano!
RIP, Pig, Keith and Jerry.
Pig was the band’s tether to the earth. He was the keeper of their roots. After he died the major 7 chords were released.
They lost their soul when they lost Pigpen
@BlackKaweah Pig was the soul, Jerry was the heart, Phil the foundation, Bobby the rhythmic rock star, Billy the beat & timekeeper, Mickey channeling the cosmic vibration. Greatest band on planet earth. ⚡️💀🥀
@@deadreckoning6288 so true
The day Pigpen passed away my girlfriend and I played hookie from High School - we heard it on the radio about 11AM or there abouts. I was always glad I played the hook that day.
ALLIGATOR has been and is my favorite tune from the first time I ever heard it. They can never do a bad version of this - short - but never bad.
RIP JERRY GARCIA 🙏🏼
May perpetual light shine upon him 🙏🏼❤
70's Dead is insanely good!! Listen to how tight this groove is.
This was when they were firing on all cylinders and it makes for a wonderful sound.
my favorite Dead era. Great version of Mr. Charlie; thanks.
Mine too. I recently spent two weeks in the hospital and I spent most of it dancing in my room to early 70's shows. I listened to shows from every era but early 70's is by far my favorite. Not saying I don't love them all, but 70-72 is the best
I can hear the drums
Voodoo all night long
Mr. Charlie tellin' me
You can't do nothin wrong
Keith sounds great on the piano
I want to hear Mr Charlie on the piano
It sits perfectly in the mix too. I bought the vinyl set of the 72 show but now I’m thinking I need to shell out the cash for the cd set of all the shows. Fuck me.
@@DingleBerry88 just do it. I double dipped and listening to these mixes, I’m fucking glad I did lol
@@DingleBerry88 You could get a good wireless speaker and stream 2000+ shows to it free from relisten
@@Sinsteel it doesn’t even come close to what a good analog mix sounds like on my system via vinyl. There’s a pride of ownership aspect too. Plus I can’t re sell my Apple Music subscription in a couple years for double what I paid for it if I decide I don’t want it anymore... Now that I typed all this I feel like you’re just fucking around.
The great Pigpen ✌️☮️
Chuba, chuba!
I hear 'Juba, juba' like the lost African diaspora tribe
Like, ever heard of Jubal Early?
Wooly bully
Mr Charlie gets me in the mood I love that song
Babies have been invented
Yes. Most humble. Great song.
Love Pig.
Keith coming in strong and vibrant. He had only been touring with them for less than two months. Good stuff--thanks.
Truth, taking the lead.
Give a listen to those great jams that Jerry and Keith did in the early '73 shows on Eyes of the World.
my first dead vinyl was an 8 song bootleg from this tour i won at a jersey shore boardwalk concession on the 1st quarter i plopped down, it was 12.5.71 felt forum nyc, holy crap the sound was excellent , i was hooked, had el paso, mr charlie, comes a time , i met people later who were at the show, i was green but was just 15 , w/envy
Wish this was video
PURE FUNK. Dead could and did play nearly every genre, and mixed it all into the magic stew.
this song has been stuck in my head all week~ happy so see this posted 😍
💃🕺💃Looking High!

Ron "pigpen" just awesome 😎👍
Real nice 👌🏻
holy moly
Loving these uploads
Love this era in the Dead. The Pigpen/Godchaux cross over. Wish I could afford this whole set. The '72 and '73 shows are awesome.
They meshed great with piano & organ. Unfortunately, Pig’s organ is too low in this mix.
Hey Pigpen, the blues roots of the Dead ,Thanks for the vibes !! Rest in peace my friend and live forever ,...
Good vibes!!!
ThX aka Midnight raver's' (BZH56/Fr)
Happy heavenly birthday pig
What a gem! Thanks for posting. It really brightened my day.
The Mighty Pig...YES!!!
Dang! This is the Grateful Dead.
Was there for that concert was high, on the mezzanine level, on acid, really trippy experience...1st Dead concert ever seen. Best one ever seen was at red rocks
Great song, great live.
My first show was englishtown,NJ, 1977, at least 50 or more shows till 1995, but my favorite period of the Dead was the pigpen years that I never got to see, but till this day, no better live album than Europe 72
Un régal !! tout simplement !!!!
greatness!!! and killer audio quality
Excellent. Thank you.
I dunno who hits that perfectly sour chord on guitar at 2:oo, but that's why I love this band.
Rare & Righteous, nice drop.
This box set looks and sounds so damn good - cant wait!
Thx for sharing your music today from Patti Cornell
Mr. Charlie told me so
Mr. Charlie was played almost 50 years later at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis on May 8, 2021. Alligator Wine recreated the entire Grateful Dead 12-10-71 show at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Go to my TH-cam Channel to watch the six videos I shot of Alligator Wine on May 8th at the Fox Theatre. Mr. Charlie is one of the videos I shot that night.

Grateful Dead, man. Nothing comes close. Nothing.
Whenever my wife asks what I have been doing in the garage,"Mr. Charlie told me so baby"
HEAT
I particularly love the harmonizing.
Pigtastic!
Like the patch on Pigpens jacket says "Good Ol Grateful Dead"! TGIF
I Got this three disc set for Christmas. I love it!
Ron McKernan was born on 8 September 1945 in San Bruno, California... happy birthday
Nice 👍 Ronny was a fucking Maverick !!!!!
Oh my god, Ronny
Wow...this version just jangles 💀🌴💀🌴💀🌴💀
I have heard many covers, including the one we do, and they just don't even come close to this sound. Trying to get our singer to either learn it right or forget it, maybe this is one that can't be copied!
R.I.P pig pen
need that jacket Pig's wearin'...patches n' all
I like hearing the Dead play at being evil 😊
And bt dub's, selling out for a management position is the PRIMARY evil screwing up our world.
Actually please don't ever say that again
The bus can come by and you'll get on whether you want to or not bro I'm pleading with you think twice
Long live Pigpen! Even as you're reading this, he's somewhere out there, riding an Easy Wind, lmao.
Keith Godchaux drives this cut really well, percussively bridging Jerry and the rhythm section.
Pigpen says it’s OK.
two by tuba's!!!... Looking High!
"Chuba Chuba"
10 days philly stadium! Let john go hard during terrapin station!!!
Mr. Charlie told me so..
✌️❤️
Honestly was never the biggest fan of Keith's playing, always preferred Brent's kaleidoscope of sound.. but early Keith shows like this almost make me second guess myself. Dude's on a passion-fire level here
3:37 My Grandpa use ta load rock salt in his 12 guage shotguns too -----💥💨 ✌️❤️🤓
Won't take ya life won't even take a limb just unload my shotgun take a little skin. Ya gotta love Robert!!!

That he was....
Jerry has a heart..peace just saying
Is pigpen playing the keys here? The picture is misleading me... Keith wasn't around yet right?
Keith joined two months earlier in October of 71.
Four Knuckleheads.....
Take a little powder, take a little salt, put it in my shotgun, I go walkin out.
Just unload my shotgun Take a little skin!😂❤❤
